Elliot Smith Tribute

[Sadie] Dupuis delivered the night's heaviest alt-rock blast, leading a Nirvana-like performance of "Abused" by dialing up the track's soft-loud-soft dynamics. [Marissa] Nadler offered a mesmerizing lullaby with the gentle strums of "Pitseleh." [Yoni] Wolf played three tracks solo on piano, including "Angeles" and "Say Yes," adding his own spin lyrically and musically, something a "chord guy" like Smith would appreciate, Wolf joked.

...

Cat Power soon walked onstage and raised a glass from behind the piano -- "cheers to Elliott," she said. She played a solo version of her own tune, the haunting "Names," from 2003's You Are Free, before her band joined for a jazz/R&B-flecked "Between the Bars," which hit with extra punch due to Marshall's own history of alcohol abuse and mental illness.

She handed out knit caps, like those Smith so often wore (Marshall sported a yellow-gold beanie over her bleached blonde hair all night), and closed with From a Basement on the Hill's "Pretty (Ugly Before)." Ferreira joined Marshall onstage, and the two traded verses and invited the crowd to join -- "Fucking sing it if you know it!" shouted Marshall -- on the repeated outro: "I was so ugly before didn't know what to do." The jam-packed audience inside the DIY venue all sang in hushed tones together, in unison. [Rolling Stone]

On the tenth anniversary of Elliott Smith's death (10/21), a number of musicians gathered at Brooklyn venue Glasslands for a tribute show. The night's cast included Cat Power, Zachary Cole Smith (DIIV), Sky Ferreira, Yoni Wolf (Why?), The Low Anthem, Luke Temple, Marissa Nadler, Aaron Pfenning, Sadie Dupuis (Speedy Ortiz), Adam Schatz, The Perennials and Tereu Tereu. Pictures of the show, a partial setlist, and a video of Sky Ferreira joining Cat Power for "Pretty (Ugly Before)" are in this post.

For Cat Power, this show was ahead of her upcoming solo tour which brings her back to NYC for two shows on November 14 at Brooklyn Masonic Temple (early and late). The early show is sold out but tickets for the late show are still available.

Sadie Dupuis played this just after her band Speedy Ortiz wrapped up a number of CMJ shows, including our Friday party. Speedy Ortiz returns to NYC tonight (10/23) at The Flat for a Mishka show with J Mascis (of Dinosaur Jr). It's an afterparty for the debut of Mishka's new Dinosaur Jr line, which happens at their store (and J will be there doing an in-store signing).

Glasslands presents: The beta male convention. Featuring the music of elliot smith

Posted by Anonymous | October 23, 2013 10:08 AM

this photo pretty much sums up why rock is in the absolute saddest state it can ever be

This was a "tribute" only in so much as it proved that Elliot Smith was a tortured and talented artist whose music was so inimitable, that a dozen people made asses of themselves unsuccessfully trying to play his music and just ended up butchering it.

Oh yeah, and Chan Marshall needs to go back to rehab, and then time bring Sky along with her. Sky is about 10 days away from an OD.

Posted by Anonymous | October 23, 2013 10:17 AM

i don't like the new lights at glasslands and i don't like sky and cole's relationship

Posted by Anonymous | October 23, 2013 10:29 AM

sky looked fuckin awful at this show; like she was on serious downers, and could barely sing above a hushed tone. It was very alarming.

But then Chan came out and somehow out-crazied her, barely being able to sing some of the words she had ON PAPER, and then she brought Sky out for the joint sing along and it was simply tragic.

would it really have been too much to LEARN THE LYRICS TO THESE SONGS?

Amateurs.

Summary: Elliot Smith is dead, but plenty of white people are still alive

Posted by Anonymous | October 23, 2013 10:33 AM

That Cole Smith guy was wearing that same ghastly outfit last night at the Fiona Apple show.

Posted by Anonymous | October 23, 2013 10:33 AM

A guess no one learned anything from Elliott's tragic struggle with addiction.

And of course Chan Marshall enabler Pitchfork ignores the clusterfuck:
http://pitchfork.com/thepitch/109-elliott-smith/

Posted by Anonymous | October 23, 2013 11:01 AM

Pitchfork's non-comment on the shit-show aspect is wild, simply not telling the whole story at all...

The whole show ended terribly awkwardly as well, as Cat Power's band seemed ready to play more, but Chan clearly could not take the spotlight anymore, so not knowing what to do, she started singing another reprise of Pretty (Ugly Before), trying to get the crowd singing along again, except it was too long after the song had already ended and that moment had passed. She trailed off and very sheepishly walked off stage again as someone in the band implored her to tell the crowd that the show was over and not just leave.

these people are so in touch with Elliott Smith that they did covers of songs he covered? they played john lennon songs. they played Big Star songs. coooooooooooooooooool.

Posted by Anonymous | October 23, 2013 11:28 AM

now ive seen sky ferrera 2wice, unfortunately.. doesnt seem like any kind of performer other than someone playing a cracked out fifteen year old.. WHO THE FUUUUCCKKKK IS BUYING THIS SHHHIIITTT?????

Posted by Anonymous | October 23, 2013 11:34 AM

These tickets were like $50 bucks, right? Glad I passed, sounds like a downer. If you're gonna do a tribute show at least take the time to memorize the lyrics.

Posted by Anonymous | October 23, 2013 11:41 AM

uh 11:34, you are.

Posted by Anonymous | October 23, 2013 11:43 AM

Nadler was the total highlight of this show. Like the 'Fork piece said, lotta music stands with lyrics, lotta half assed "tributes." That girl knew the lyrics and had even learned the F'ing finger picking patterns. Loved Speedy Ortiz and Luke Temple as well. What a weird, uneven, night overall though.

Couldn't have summed things up any better, 10:08. But then again, it IS Glasslands we're talking about here to begin with.

say what u will about petty/dylan fest. at least they're organized and some people actually know the lyrics!

lennon tribute and now this at glasslands have been a complete mess.

brooklyn vs manhattan. manhattan usually wins.

Posted by Anonymous | October 23, 2013 2:11 PM

not to sound too broad here, but this night is pretty much indicative of everything bad about music right now.

Posted by Anonymous | October 23, 2013 3:16 PM

chan marshall is trying so hard to rebrand herself as "down and out"

it is bullshit

Posted by Anonymous | October 23, 2013 3:36 PM

she's a crust punk now!

Posted by Anonymous | October 23, 2013 3:49 PM

Y'all haters! I think the concert was tremendously moving, with some particularly transcendent moments (Adam Schatz, Luke Temple) -- above all, Chan Marshall's solo performance of her song Names, which was one of the most intense and emotional works of art I've ever seen. Almost every musician who read lyrics or chords off paper said that it was because Smith's music was deceptively simple and actually difficult to memorize. So give them some slack! I feel sorry for everyone who there and missed out on reveling in such a special time because they were preoccupied being too pointlessly critical.

Posted by z pace | October 23, 2013 4:52 PM

i agree it was a great show overall - but the descent into drug riddled crazy at the the end with Sky Ferriera and Cat Power was pretty bonkers

Posted by Anonymous | October 23, 2013 4:57 PM

i don't really get all the criticism -- all these performers were ASKED to play elliott smith covers. that was the whole concept of the show, unless I'm mistaken -- i don't agree that that's necessarily how elliott would have wanted tribute paid to him, but i was there and i think the atmosphere by the end was fun and crazy and weird and was definitely the kind of vibe that i think ANYBODY would be happy to have at their tribute.

and i thought all the performers were good except for the guy from chairlift who got up there and played this weird synthpop song that had nothing to do with elliott smith and was totally alien to the atmosphere of the show at that point, and then played "under the milky way" which also was totally irrelevant and then added this big wanky guitar solo to the end of it which just made me wonder what the fuck was going on and if this guy was perhaps at the wrong show.

cat power was amazing and both she and sky ferreira read off lyric sheets which some people seemed to have a problem with. i don't understand why anybody gives a shit, it's way better to have a piece of paper as reference than to totally fuck up the words in front of everyone. a lot of his songs have a lot of words and i totally understand.

it seemed like cat power had fallen off the wagon for sure, she was definitely sloshed by the time she walked off-stage and into the big black SUV that was waiting outside.

"above all, Chan Marshall's solo performance of her song Names, which was one of the most intense and emotional works of art I've ever seen."

This is spoof, right? She FORGOT THE CHORD CHANGES TO HER OWN SONG. More than once. It wasn't "intense and emotional", it was sad and degrading.

Drug and alcohol abuse isn't fun or funny, its pathetic. Sky Ferriera is young and immature and will hopefully get help to get off the smack. But Chan Marshall is older and should know better. For chrissakes, she was Elliot Smith's friend, and to pay tribute she gets fucked up and embarasses herself on stage in his name. That's not a tribute, its spitting on his grave.

adam played "in the lost and found", not "happiness".

Posted by Anonymous | October 23, 2013 5:58 PM

Devin from DIIV here.

I wanted to go to this show but neither Cole or Sky hit me back for a list spot. I probably could have still gotten in since I know the people at Glasslands regardless but I don't like Elliott Smith AT ALL. Monster Squad and my bong was my Monday night.

For the last time, Sky does NOT do heroin. If you're going to troll, at least get it right. I love how dark the comments on this site get but it's just not funny if everyone is misinformed. Kind of proves how retarded everyone is in the comments section.

Posted by Serpent | October 23, 2013 6:48 PM

Heyo...you guys get my last comment? It's not up yet but all these others are going up, yet I said nothing bad. Please post it! Thanks :)

Also, Devin, thanks for your comment.

Posted by Jen Brown | October 23, 2013 6:58 PM

Jen, the Devin comments are a running gag.

Posted by Anonymous | October 23, 2013 7:32 PM

Haha, oookay...don't know why anyone would waste time doing that.

My first post that didn't go up for some reason shared with people that Chan printed lyrics because she wasn't planning on playing ES songs initially. She didn't want to because he was such a good musician and she didn't want to mess anything up...but then I guess she wondered how she could NOT play them, considering so many other acts were playing them. She also told me that she knew and loved his music, but she didn't know his songs that well because at the time when they were touring together, she was going through her own personal stuff and couldn't even stay in the room while he was playing.

Just asking for sensitivity. Everyone went way out of their way to play this show and there was so much love in that room. If you want to go out of your way to pull out negativity and judgment (why you want to harp on Sky and Cole's relationship, I have no idea), then fine, but at least have the balls to put your name under your comment.

ANYWAY, if anyone wants to donate to the fundraiser, you still can. :) http://www.indiegogo.com/projects/an-elliott-smith-tribute-show

Thanks guys

For the last time it's 'mentally-challenged' not 'retarted' you fucking kike.

Posted by Anonymous | October 23, 2013 8:26 PM

I truly don't think Chan was high or even drunk. She's a very anxious performer with some nervous ticks.

Posted by z pace | October 23, 2013 9:22 PM

if you're preforming a tribute show and need a lyrics sheet, you're an ass and shouldn't be preforming at the show.

This show was announced a while ago with Cat Power advertised as a part of it. Surely she could have practiced in the weeks leading up to the show? It wasn't just a pop-in to play whatever.

Alos, here are the "difficult to memorize" lyrics for Pretty (Ugly Before):

Sunshine
Been keeping me up for days
There is no nightime
It's only a passing phase
And I feel pretty
Pretty enough for you
I felt so ugly before
I didn't know what to do

Sometimes
Is all I feel up to now
But it's not worth it to you
Because you got to get high somehow
Is it destruction
That you're required to feel?
Like somebody wants you
Someone that's more for real

(Repeat first verse)
End. Really hard to memorize two fucking verses.
