Death Grips
DG photo by Wei Shi @ FYF Fest

Passion Pit was kind enough to take the time to let fans know "a few" of the reasons bands cancel shows, like "weather", "general illness", "metal illness" and "conflicting schedules" (did they mean "emergency situation"?). We'd like to add a few more to the list:

1) Low Ticket Sales - Sometimes bands cancel shows because they don't want to play to an empty room, or it will be cheaper to refund everyone's money than pay the expenses associated with playing to a half-filled room. Sometimes they or the promoters are honest about it. Sometimes they aren't. Sometimes this can be solved by moving the show to a smaller venue instead of cancelling.

2) "Visa Issues" - This is a legitimate issue many artists face when trying to play overseas, and that sucks. Artists and/or the people who work for them can be overly optimistic and announce overseas shows before the band has the proper approval to play them, partially because they need to announce the show way in advance and the government can be slow. Sometimes it's easier to blame the country than yourself for filling out paperwork late. Sometimes you just need to say something that sounds better than "low ticket sales".

3) Drugs

4) Offered Something Better - Sometimes artists get offered late night TV shows or tours with Paramore but they already scheduled shows during that time. Sometimes those artists decide that taking that new opportunity is important for their career, and worth pissing off a few fans and complicating things.

and last but not least...

5) Death Grips.

Add your own reasons in the comments!

The promoter stops answering your phone calls and you're not sure the gig is even on any more.

How has ED (Explosive Diarrhea) not been added?

Posted by Anonymous | October 9, 2013 4:41 PM

@ 4:41, I remember the first time I tried the hot sauce at Mamouns, too.

Probably a lot of those Visa issues fall under ED.

9. Include Boyd Rice on the bill

5:23(1) - "Scheduling conflict" is also code for low ticket sales. Also, "exhaustion".

About 10 years ago, I was supposed to see Sham 69 at a festival in Japan. A week before the show, one of the band members threw out his back. So he could not fly from England to Japan. At the last minute, they got Charged GBH to play instead. Colin Abrahall wore full punk gear on stage; the rest of the band sweat pants and flannel shirts.

Posted by mike | October 9, 2013 9:05 PM

Thanks for sharing Mike. How did it make you feel to see all those sweat pants?

Sinead O'Connor's open letter to me was too long and I had to read Amanda Palmer's open letter to me to understand what it was all about

Mental illness. Most of our fans know about my condition but this only hurt us a few times, and it was well over a year ago, and I work my ass of to make sure I can get out on stage and tour. More on how we made up all of these shows later.

9:05 you suck.

Posted by Anonymous | October 10, 2013 12:35 PM

Or really you're just a band that suddenly realizes that almost all of your fan base that comes to your shows are a bunch of scarves, and you find it hard to come to terms that the crowds you were playing for 20+ years ago in your heyday devolved into these fake "New Yorkers" that are barely excuses for humans.

Every other answer is just a dishonorable mention.

Natural disaster

Death of a family member or very close friend of the band

Death or shooting at the venue before the event

Accident including one while on the way to the show

Injury to a band member or band members

Venue cancelled the show

Promoter cancelled the show

Venue shut down or closed temporarily for a reason outside of a death or shooting at the venue

Band member quit, was fired, left the band on his own, or left the band after being asked to leave

Band member was unable to get off from work or was told he has to work during the show after being given the day off to play it

13.) shaft length

Posted by Anonymous | October 15, 2013 10:38 PM

Never forced myself to get into them, i'm open minded so when i come across music i don't judge a musician by only one song or album i'd have to dig into their whole catalog to actually judge. This was the first song i heard from them and i didn't like it until i started digging deeper inside the crates and actually listening to an whole album.
