One of the best parts about CMJ is the day shows that are mostly free and give you a chance to see live music in a slightly less competitive time. Saturday is the busiest for day parties, so to give you a chance to plan your early afternoon ahead of time, we’re giving you tomorrow’s daytime picks today (Friday). You can browse our full NYC show calendar for all shows, and here are some highlights…

Spires, Pity Sex, Courtney Barnett, Yuck, King Dude, Nothing, Special Guest, Mac McCaughan, Ex Hex, Drowners, Joanna Gruesome, Public Service Broadcasting @ Baby’s All Right
Our second of two FREE (no RSVP, no badges) parties at Baby’s All Right (146 Broadway in Williamsburg) goes down today, and it’s a day and night party. For this one we’ve got local psych band Spires, emo-shoegazers Pity Sex, witty psych-pop songwriter Courtney Barnett, the new incarnation of Yuck, goth/noir country balladeer King Dude, Relapse-signed shoegazers Nothing, a SPECIAL heavy GUEST (TBA very soon) Pallbearer, grunge-folk singer Torres, folk-y emo-y rockers Hop Along, a solo set from Superchunk’s Mac McCaughan, and the NYC debut of Mary Timony’s (Wild Flag, Helium, Autoclave) new band Ex Hex. And lots more, 14 hours of music in total! Free! (and free rum courtesy of Sailor Jerry and free tattoos too!)

Schedule for our party is below.

Hunters, Ex-Cult, Roomrunner, Fat Tony, Crosss @ Cake Shop
Panache Booking is behind this day party that features quite a few intense live acts. Any chance to get up close and person to Hunters and Ex-Cult is a good time.

Drowners, Clear Plastic Masks, Caveman, Landshapes, Eagulls, Bear Mountain, Spires, Most Thieves, Kodaline, Jacco Gardner, Kan Wakan @ Pianos
This is Bowery Presents annual CMJ day bash, with an excellent line-up of bands as always.

Hockey, Black Taxi, Ski Lodge, TV Girl, Grandchildren, Easter Island, Real Magic @ Rockwood Music Hall (FREE)
If you’re milling about the LES day party scene, it’s worth popping over to Rockwood to check out TV Girl and Ski Lodge, both on the indiepop tip.

Special Guest, WIM, Reptiles, The Novocaines, Them Swoops, Ball Park Music, The Preatures, Delta Riggs, Kingswood, Oh Mercy, Royston Vasie, Emperors, Stillwater Giants, City Riots (5:35pm), Enola Fall, The Griswolds, Sheppard, Tigertown, Cub Sports @ The Delancey

Caveman, Empress Of, French Horn Rebellion, Joywave, Hockey, Little Daylight, TV Girl, Belle Mare, Highs, Wilsen, How Sad, Deidre & The Dark @ Cameo Gallery
If you’re on your way to or from Smorgasburg, stop by Cameo for this smorgasbord of quality acts.

Weekend, Odonis Odonis, Hunters, HSY, Flashlights, Young Oprah Winfrey DJ set, DJ Tanner DJ set @ Muchmore’s
Lots of good bands on this bill too: gothy shoegazers Weekend, Toronto noise rockers Odonis Odonis, lively NYC band Hunters, Toronto sludge punks HSY, and more.

Kingsley Flood, Defibulators, John Murry, Shelby Earl @ Skinny Dennis
Williamsburg faux honky tonk gets in on the CMJ action with an all-Americana line-up. The band we’re most excited about on this bill is Brooklyn bluegrass band The Defibulators, who stay pretty true to the genre’s roots, but do add a bit of a rockin’ edge.
