Sinead

Earlier today Sinead O'Connor posted a letter to Miley Cyrus, a letter that Amanda Palmer then reacted to, and a letter to which Miley herself (who just let Terry Richardson post even more extremely risque photos) reacted to on Twitter. That reaction by Miley led to a second letter by Sinead, which you can read below...

--
ANOTHER OPEN LETTER TO MILEY CYRUS

Miley... Really? Who the fuck is advising you? Because taking me on is even more fuckin' stupid than behaving like a prostitute and calling it feminism. You have posted today tweets of mine which are two years old, which were posted by me when I was unwell and seeking help so as to make them look like they are recent. In doing so you mock myself and Amanda Bynes for having suffered with mental health issues and for having sought help.

I mean really really... who advises you? have you any idea how stupid and dangerous it is to mock people for suffering illness? You will yourself one day suffer such illness, that is without doubt. The course you have set yourself upon can only end in that, trust me.

I am staggered that any 20 yr old woman of the 21st century could behave in such a dangerous and irresponsible manner as to not only send the signal to young women that its ok to act like prostitutes but also to the signal that those who have suffered or do suffer mental health problems are to be mocked and have their opinions invalidated. Have you no sense of danger at all? or responsibility? Remove your tweets immediately or you will hear from my lawyers. I am certain you will be hearing from all manner of mental health advocacy groups also. It is not acceptable to mock any person for having suffered.

It is most unbecoming of you to respond in such a fashion to someone who expressed care for you. And worse that you are such an anti-female tool of the anti-female music industry. I hope that you will apologise to Amanda Bynes and to any person who has been wounded by your mockery of those who have suffered. And I hope that you will wake up and understand that you in fact are a danger to women.

Furthermore you posted a photo of me tearing the pope's photo .. as if to imply insanity.. by doing so all you have achieved is to expose your staggering ignorance. I suggest you read The Philadelphia Report, The Boston Report, all the reports which will illuminate for you why that action of mine remains sane and valid. By mocking it you mock every child who suffered sexual abuse at the hands of priests and had it covered by the Vatican. You could really do with educating yourself, that is if you're not too busy getting your tits out to read. - Sinead

Sinead is going on tour in November.

It's a strange world when I find myself agreeing with Sinead O'Connor.

Posted by Anonymous | October 3, 2013 8:33 PM

I think that Miley changed a lot, to think that she will be this kind of girl, it really did not occur to me that the reason behind all this is just a guy.

Posted by David Contarino | October 3, 2013 9:29 PM

Wow, Miley's photos are HOT!!

Yeah, but that guy is a creeper.

You know what's unbecoming? A 47-year-old woman instigating a feud with a 20-year-old over the way she dresses and acts. Pathetic.

Posted by Kalera Stratton | October 4, 2013 12:22 AM

BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOBIES!

Posted by d | October 4, 2013 12:23 AM

This is ridiculous.

Posted by Anonymous | October 4, 2013 12:47 AM

The question one must ask is why does anyone care what Miley Cyrus does or says? She just the next in a long line of low talent women using their bodies to sell their disposable music. Nothing new here whatsoever.

Posted by Anonymous | October 4, 2013 1:15 AM

Wow, Miley's photos are SAD!!

Posted by Anonymous | October 4, 2013 1:16 AM

Hey Kalera

Miley (at first) looked up to Sinead as inspiration then made fun of Sinead who sent it back.

What's unbecoming is a 20-year old making fun of people who have suffered mental illness including a person she supposedly looked/looks up to, or does she get a "youth pass" for her tweets? When you're 20 years old you're old enough to know better than to make fun/light of mental illness and the sufferers of it.

Sinead has every right to comment on Miley when Miley is invoking her name. If you publicly declare someone as one of your influences, prepare for at least one of those influences to possibly (and in this case definitely) comment. Sinead may have been somewhat maternal in her initial public letter to Miley but I think she meant well and no disrespect - she was looking out for Miley who can't accept criticism or guidance from people who have been there.

What's hilarious is Miley's look is almost EXACTLY the look of any of the models in Robert Palmer's video "Addicted To Love". She should be glad Madonna hasn't commented because you better believe Miley is ripping off Madonna big time (short bleached blond hair, midriffs, shorts, kooky look.)

Posted by Anonymous | October 4, 2013 1:17 AM

Miley is a tard and Sinead needs a hobby

Posted by Anonymous | October 4, 2013 1:34 AM

The correct reaction to a passive aggressive letter from Sinead yammering about how much she "cares" while implying that one's own ideas were the result of a bunch of corporate guys "pimping" her (because grrrrrls aren't SPOSED-TA have ideas or agency or sexuality or any of that stuff! Tee hee hee!) in an attempt to get Miley to SHUT UP AND GO AWAY is EXACTLY what Miley tweeted.

I'm with Amanda and Miley on this one.

I'm in my 30's and haven't given a flying fuck about the VMA's since Kurt Cobain died, but when I showed up to work the day after the Miley Cyrus edition and that's all I was hearing about, I finally gave in and youtubed it. As a man who has always valued feminism and equality all across the spectrum, I have to say that I really felt bad for human kind in that moment. It was like the movie "Idiocracy" coming true. I'm with Sinead on this one. That's not feminism, that's just insecurity gone way over board!

I come to BV on a Friday morning looking for some music information, hopefully something exclusive.

What do I find? The exact same story that is showing up on a newsfeed coming from Us Magazine. Is that what your site has become, BV?

Sinead is such a desperate pathetic has been.

I love this -- Sinead, well said. Miley Sirus, jump off a fucking bridge.

Is there anyway we could bring back public stonings?

Posted by Anonymous | October 4, 2013 9:50 AM

She was raised to do as she pleased miley is amazing and people are too dramatic about things Amanda Bynes hated in miley plenty so why should she apologize to her leave miley alone

Posted by Anonymous | October 4, 2013 10:02 AM

All this because Radiohead didn't want to meet her. Thanks guys.

Posted by Anonymous | October 4, 2013 10:58 AM

Miley is just a stupid cunt, leave her alone.

Posted by Anonymous | October 4, 2013 11:05 AM

Those Terry Richardson shots are pretty grody. If you zoom in you see A. just how poor the quality of the image is and B. just how Miley still looks like a trashy 14 year old posing for blackmarket child porn/prostitution.

Honestly, I wish someone would ask her what she is trying to express in the picture with the arizona tea can on her cooter, pointing at it like "This is IT", and her tongue out. What is that supposed to mean? I think in the end, she would realize it means absolutely nothing but that it means a whole helluva lot in the grander scheme. It means "THIS is IT - THIS is all I've got and all I'm worth"

Posted by Anonymous | October 4, 2013 12:51 PM

i give - how young, ignorant and careless do you have to be to see the name Amanda PALMER and see Amanda BYNES?

more to the point - how could ANYONE - including the person who put her name in the title and the 46 people who have commented so far- believe Amanda Bynes wrote that letter?

Posted by jude | October 4, 2013 2:48 PM

LOL - Sinead mixed em up.

Posted by jude | October 4, 2013 2:51 PM

Ice-T is involved in this mess now? I have no idea what to make of all this.

Posted by Anonymous | October 4, 2013 3:33 PM

The iGeneration likes Miley because they relate to the disfunctional brain she showcases.

Posted by Anonymous | October 4, 2013 4:12 PM

@ jude Sinead did NOT mix them up, if you read the previous article you would realize that the whole reason Sinead is WRITING this reply is because Miley posted on Twitter "Before Amanda Bynes.... There was...."

Please check your sources before you post anything to the internet, to avoid looking stupid.

Posted by Anonymous | October 4, 2013 7:15 PM

I've read both her letters now, and I must say as a woman who ha suffered mental illness as well as been a victim of sexual violence, I feel compelled to say that Sinead was off base when she states that Miley is being used by the media because she dresses and acts in ways that accentuate her sex and sexuality--even if it's true in this case, it implies that no woman ever expresses her sexuality for herself. It perpetuates rape culture ('if a girl dresses like that, she's asking for it'). And while I whole-heatedly believe that Sinead only ants the best for Miley and omen the way in which she addressed her concerns made it seem as though she's bought the lie society has sold us as females--that we must be pure and 'lady-like' and never give boys the 'wrong impression.'I call bullshit and I am offended.

However, Miley was wrong to try to invalidate Sinead's opinion by attacking her mental health. There is so much stigma surrounding it in the modern era and it is upsetting that it is in any way acceptable by society's standards to speak like that. I feel deeply for anyone who has suffered or suffers from mental illness and I hope they find a way to manage/overcome it.

Posted by Anonymous | October 4, 2013 8:55 PM

I wonder if Miley will ever grow up, get married, and have children? Then I'll wonder what she'll say to her little girl or boy when someone shows them these photos of 'Mommy'. The past has a way of coming back to haunt you.

Posted by anonymous | October 4, 2013 10:11 PM

I bet sasha grey already had children and flushed them down the toilet alive when they asked her what she did for a living

Posted by Anonymous | October 4, 2013 11:16 PM

if you look at those terry richardson pictures it's obvious miley has a shaved bieber.

After reading these letters I had to go an look at Miley's TL on twitter. All I got to say is how sad to see such an immature shallow little girl in a woman's body. I am beyond glad my daughter and son have no interest in her music. Beyond that, as a person that is well versed in mental health both through experience and schooling, Miley's mocking of those suffering mental illness is deplorable. You wouldn't mock someone for having diabetes or heart disease (well maybe she would) The brain is just another organ in our bodies that can malfunction. Anyone that shames someone for any illness is a creep. Not only that, because she is high profile and is idolized, she is doing harm by perpetuating a stigma that causes thousands to go untreated due to fear and shame.

Posted by Anonymous | October 5, 2013 11:51 PM

Being that Sinead posted another letter. Miley got exactly what she was aiming for as an entertainer... more publicity.

Posted by Charles | October 6, 2013 2:04 PM

Sounds like Coke vs Pepsi, they aren't as concerned which brand you buy, just as long as you buy one or the other and not something else.

Posted by Laughing all the way to thhe bank | October 6, 2013 7:15 PM

Sinead,
When you publicly berate someone for their choices, it is naive to think that there wouldn't be any back lash. Miley is another young artist just figuring it all out and she will make her own successful choices and her share of mistakes.
If you truly cared about her as an artist, woman and friend you could have reached out to her personally with a great deal of support and care. Instead you choose a path of public shame and attempted humiliation that comes across as just another woman tearing down another woman. Looks like F#%k you is the answer miley sent back, and really I can't blame her. There is a point when people are criticized that it doesn't help them, instead it makes them run the other way.
You started this public display with her and now you want to whine about her pushing back with all of her teenage like angst....really, I didn't know your were quite that stupid. AND you antagonize her still by telling her that "taking you on is stupid..." Where is your maturity if you can't let some of this roll off. Was that a threat of continued Miley bashing? Why do you even care what she does. I think she should have the freedom to express herself as an artist how ever she chooses. She and all female artists should be comfortable to be in their own skin or cover up how they want and switch those choices as their career evolves. You all are in the business that is really at many times theater of the absurd.
I am sorry that you are feeling like such a bitter person.
~Chris

Posted by Jack | October 7, 2013 10:01 AM

You're right. She acted like an idiot naming her former band after a German city famous for its bombing in World War II and making light of the death and destruction there with the name "Dresden Dolls".

Posted by D | October 7, 2013 10:25 AM

I don't know much about any of these people. All I know is that at this point Amanda is the only one not relying on dysphemisms or ad hominems.

Posted by Jack | October 7, 2013 11:24 AM

I... am both shocked and appalled that a woman who wants to talk about feminism and women's rights would have the gall to sit here and write to another woman about how SHE should behave. Maybe mind your own business and let other people do what THEY want to do, and get off the high horse that makes you think you know everything. Good lord who the hell does she think she is? Miley is just a young thing, but she's doing it her way and no one has the right to tell her otherwise. I'd laugh in the face of anyone who told me how to live my life.
