I’m not 100% sure what the average age was at The Bouncing Souls‘ Music Hall of Williamsburg show on Monday (9/30) — our latest BrooklynVegan-curated installment of Red Bull Sound Select — but it was no all ages hardcore matinee show. Yet that didn’t stop the crowd, who probably had work rather than school the next morning, from going apeshit like they were in their teens for the New Brunswick punk heroes. The Souls (new drummer George Rebelo of Hot Water Music included) were in great spirits delivering tons of old favorites — “True Believers,” “Hopeless Romantic,” “Manthem,” etc — which had the crowd shouting back, fists in the air, piling up on each other, and endlessly stage diving.

Before they went on, co-headliner and co-curator Brian Fallon (frontman of The Gaslight Anthem) played a “solo” set, joined by his bandmate Alex Rosamilia on guitar. The Bouncing Souls and The Gaslight Anthem have a long history together, and though the latter might be more successful, they’ll tell you it never would have happened without the influence of The Bouncing Souls. So it was a pretty special night, because the two bands who have shared bills many times — just this summer in NYC in fact — collaborated on stage for the first time ever.

Brian and Alex began their set together, playing stripped down folkier versions of GA tunes with the whole crowd singing along like a drunken campfire night. A bunch of covers were worked in too (check out a picture of the setlist below), including The Misfits’ “Astro Zombies” (for which he was joined by an enthusiastic crowd member) and Roky Erickson’s “I Walked with a Zombie” (for which Brian instructed the entire crowd to sing, and which he played and talked about on the East Village Radio special we recorded with him). Eventually, all four members of The Bouncing Souls joined Brian and Alex for a few songs at the end of their set, including Gaslight Anthem’s “Handwritten.” And Alex returned the favor by sneaking in on guitar towards the end of The Bouncing Souls’ set.

As with all RBSS shows, the openers are local bands. For this one, we teamed up with Brian to pick two Brooklyn bands that would fit the punk theme of the night. First was Aye Nako, whose amped up rhythms (thanks to a ferocious drummer) and sugary guitar melodies recall the heyday of pop punk, before the genre was taken over by jet-black bangs and neon t-shirts. After them was Nude Beach, who have an early Elvis Costello thing going on, but with a punk attitude and lo-fi ideals. Both bands acknowledged the headliners from stage, with Aye Nako singer Mars Ganito mentioning she was once in a Bouncing Souls cover band for a Halloween show.

Comedian Chris Gethard hosted the show, cracking jokes about his birthplace New Jersey, where it seemed like much of the crowd had traveled from that night to see the co-headliners from NJ play a $3 show in Brooklyn. .

NYC Red Bull Sound Select shows — always only $3 — happen each month and are curated either by BrooklynVegan, East Village Radio, Afropunk or Brooklyn Bodega. The same happens in other cities (like the recent Mannie Fresh show in Chicago and Tobacco show in Austin).

“I can’t even describe the energy and love of the show at the Musical Hall of Williamsburg last night. The Souls played for their long time fans- it was amazing. If I don’t ever see them again, I couldn’t be happier to have been a part of that show.” – Maria Barannikova
