Lorde

Matthew Perpetua at Buzzfeed writes:

"On a superficial level, it can be hard to understand why Lorde is being lumped in with the alternative rock crowd. There's not a lot of "rock" in her songs, and her voice comes closer to the R&B-influenced inflections of pop radio than the yelps, whines, and shouts that have always dominated "alternative" music. There are moments on her debut, Pure Heroine, that tip in the direction of artier indie music -- she leans pretty hard on ambient drones and minimalist beats on cuts like "Ribs" and "400 Lux." But overall, it's a set of songs that exist in more or less the same cultural space as Katy Perry and Miley Cyrus. (Not to mention Drake, who is also a pretty big fan of ambient minimalism.)" "I'm guessing she came from the brainchild of some suits in LA or NY."

She's a teenager from New Zealand. How could that be the "brainchild" of "some suits"?

Indie=Alternative

Alternative died in the 90s

Posted by Anonymous | October 2, 2013 5:23 PM

She's pop. the kids like today forget tomorrow. Strike while the irons hot Ms Lorde.

Posted by Anonymous | October 2, 2013 5:26 PM

Alternative didn't really have any practical meaning, as far as describing a sound or aesthetic goes, by the mid 90s. What on God's green earth does it mean in 2013?

Perpetua writing for buzzfeed has to be the most pathetically bad career choice in the history of music journalism.

The music is crap, but her voice is great.

I heard that song about not being royals because it's their blood, I thought it was Regina Spektor, or one of her progeny. I found out it was Lorde when the Palladia network had a commercial of her, that was basically just like 'check her out' I bet Darryl would like to have her over for some live from Darryl's house (I am implying that Darryl would like to have sex with her).

I came here looking for Lordi.... Damn I was disappointed...

1. The music's a light version of stuff Alt's been playing with for a few years now.

2. Song's got a classic Alternative message. A fantastic message that I applaud. Since about 2009 Alt's been back on track and the rats have thinned out a bit.

In fact- it's exactly like 90s Alternative. Do you gripe about it's watered down qualities, or do you celebrate its idealism. Takes me back 20 years.

I love this song! Can people please watch my cover of the song? x

Posted by Julieta | November 1, 2013 7:07 AM

No Lorde, you aren't alternative. Alternative is Bjork, Peaches, Siouxsie, Zola Jesus, Lene Lovich, Diamanda Galas, Lydia Lunch etc.

Posted by DJT | October 13, 2014 10:57 PM

I could not get past 3 songs from a live stream of her concert. It was intolerable and torturous.

Posted by Anonymous | October 13, 2014 11:08 PM

I would just like to ask one thing. Why is anyone having a serious conversation about this?

Posted by Anonymous | October 14, 2014 12:09 AM

Money goes to money, in Germany ppl say the devils shits always on the biggest pile of shit. Thats the answer, this is capitalism, no matter how good or bad someone is at what she/he is doing, even if they do nothing, they get rich and famous, while real artists, or other talented ppl, get never discovered and die poor and lonely. After the death of some of them some greedy bastards makes money with what others have created. It has been this way since the invention of the monetary system.
