If you’ve looked at this site at all this week you are aware that the 2013 CMJ Music Marathon is in full swing and hopefully during the afternoon you’re calling in sick and going to one of the many free day parties happening. Specifically, we’d love to see you at ours. Browse our full NYC show calendar for all of tonight’s shows. We’ve got tonight’s highlights — most but not all are CMJ shows — here and more options listed further down.

Arcade Fire @ 299 Meserole
Montreal’s indie royalty have all but hijacked CMJ with these two shows in Bushwick. It’s sure to be a spectacle. Did you get tickets?

Pelican, Sannhet, Kings Destroy, Wreck and Reference, Phantom Glue, Pyrrhon @ Saint Vitus
Pelican returns to headline the second night of our CMJ showcase tonight. They’ll receive support from up-and-coming BK locals Sannhet, Kings Destroy, and Pyrrhon, plus keyboard warriors Wreck & Reference and beefy noise rock group Phantom Glue. This is sold out, but you can still get in with a CMJ badge (based on capacity).

Fuck Buttons, Mystery Skulls, Lichens @ Le Poisson Rouge
This is the only CMJ show for UK psychedelic electronic duo, who are currently on a North American tour. Their new album, Slow Focus, is a worthy entry into the band’s already-great catalog, and fits in really well the wealth of leftfield dance music coming out this year (Jon Hopkins, Arca, Forest Swords, etc).

Yamantaka//Sonic Titan, Speedy Ortiz, Joanna Gruesome, Priests, Perfect Pussy, Courtney Barnett, Eleanor Friedberger (The Fiery Furnaces) @ 285 Kent Avenue
This is the first of two unofficial CMJ shows that Pitchfork is doing this year, and this is their rock one. It kicks off with a solo set from Fiery Furnances’ Eleanor Friedberger, followed by witty psych-pop songwriter Courtney Barnett, noise punks Perfect Pussy, post-punk rippers Priests, intense noise rockers Joanna Gruesome, traditionalist (but not retro) indie rockers Speedy Ortiz, and theatrical genre-defying band Yamantaka // Sonic Titan.

Vadoinmessico, Eros and the Eschaton, Gang of Youths, Like Swimming, Holy Esque, Saintseneca @ Cake Shop
The band we’re most excited about on this bill is Saintseneca, who make folk punk, but a fleshed-out, multi-layered kind that isn’t too far removed from early Arcade Fire. The ground-up band (who share members with The Sidekicks and All Dogs) have DIY roots, but are now signed to ANTI- for their forthcoming album, and potentially reaching wider audiences than ever before.

Bleeding Rainbow, EULA, The Flag, Psychic Blood, Little Radar, Advaeta @ Cloud City
This bill is pretty stacked, including especially notable sets from shoegazers Bleeding Rainbow (who have been previewing their punky new material at this year’s CMJ), local noise rockers EULA, Western Mass noise rockers Psychic Blood, and local post-punk trio Advaeta.

Saint Vitus, Pallbearer, Hookers @ Europa
Pioneering, influential doom metal band Saint Vitus (not to be confused with the Brooklyn venue) are still kicking, after having been rejuvenated with last year’s very solid Lillie: F-65 album. Supporting them is Pallbearer, who are one of the best current bands in the world of doom.

Tourist, Figgy, Real Magic @ Glasslands
This is the NYC debut of Tourist, who used to make music that could vaguely be considered chillwave, and now has jumped on the post-Disclosure house bandwagon. That’s not meant in a negative way though, Disclosure are pretty big fans of this guy themselves.

Good Riddance, The Flatliners, Western Addiction, Night Birds @ Music Hall of Williamsburg
The land portion of Fat Wreck Chords’ annual CMJ showcases (they have a cruise tomorrow) takes place today, with TWO reunion bands: Good Riddance and Western Addiction. Plus, if you’re going to this, we recommend getting there early for Night Birds, whose surfy skate punk likely wouldn’t exist without some of the key Fat bands of the past (and also Dead Kennedys, Descendents, etc).

Com Truise, Joel Ford, Lord Raja, Heathered Pearls, Patrick Russell, Nitemoves, Contakt @ Output
Ghostly International is taking over new Williamsburg dance hotspot Output for their unofficial showcase, which is headlined by Com Truise and also features Joel Ford (who’s been spend much of CMJ with his new duo Ejecta), and a bunch of other good names.

Danzig, Doyle, Butcher Babies, Texas Hippie Coalition, A Pale Horse Named Death @ Roseland Ballroom
Danzig is currently on tour playing music from throughout his long, multi-band career, with his former Misfits bandmate Doyle joining him on select songs each night. Don’t take any iPhone videos of this one.

Saul Williams, Dragons of Zynth, Odonis Odonis, Rey Pila, HSY, Victory, Weaves @ Santos Party House
This multi-genre bill features spoken word artist Saul Williams, plus two Toronto noise rock bands, Odonis Odonis and HSY, another Toronto band Weaves, and more.

ARNOLD (M|O|D) (DJ Set), Born Gold, Pity Sex, Joanna Gruesome, Julia Brown, Homeshake @ Shea Stadium
There’s a lot of good stuff on this Portals showcase, including high-energy electro-popper Born Gold, emo-shoegazers Pity Sex, Welsh noise rockers Joanna Gruesome (a favorite at this year’s CMJ), lo-fi band Julia Brown and more.

The Dismemberment Plan, Wild Cub @ Terminal 5
Few bands have created as distinct a mix of indie rock and post-hardcore as The Dismemberment Plan, so it’s great to see these guys back in action. Tonight’s their big Terminal 5 show.

Father John Misty (solo), Kate Berlant @ Town Hall
Whether or not you like his songwriting, it’s hard to deny that Father John Misty is quite the performer. His full band shows are a real spectacle, and tonight he strips it down for a solo set. Comedian Kate Berlant opens.

Janelle Monae @ The Apollo Theater
Janelle Monae takes classic soul, funk, and R&B formulas and constantly pushes them in new directions. It always feels like a bit of an honor when an artist gets to play the legendary Apollo Theater, and considering what Janelle has done for genres that have always been at home here, this feels pretty appropriate.

YT//ST @ Pop Montreal 2013 (more by Dominick Mastrangelo)
Y//ST

Yamantaka // Sonic Titan, TOPS, Pat Jordache, CAMP, Kandle, A K U A, Foxtrott, Webster, VioleTT Pi @ Arlene’s Grocery
It’s the annual M for Montreal showcase with a full evening of Canadian acts. Of special note: Pat Jordache whose gothy/dubby/scratchy postpunk is a good mood-setter for Halloween. Also: free poutine from 5 – 7 PM for those who love fries, gravy and cheese curds all mixed up together (that does not include the founder of this blog).

Pearl Jam @ Barclays Center
Though they don’t have the radio hits they did in the ’90s, Pearl Jam are still massively popular with legions of fans — hence selling out two nights at Barclays Center (tonight’s the first).

Fuck The Facts, Fit For An Autopsy, Meek is Murder, Hivemasher, Stomach Earth @ The Acheron
MetalSucks/Metal Injection’s CMJ showcase stars the long-running Canadian grinders Fuck the Facts and the deathcore band Fit For An Autopsy. Notable support will be provided by the like-minded grind/hardcore bands Meek Is Murder and Hivesmasher, plus the live debut of the excellent death/doom act Stomach Earth.

The Long Winters, Eleanor Friedberger, Reuben and the Dark, Kan Wakan, Promised Land Sound, Okta Logue @ Bowery Ballroom
It’s been a while since The Long Winters playing NYC, and here they headline a stacked CMJ show and will perform their album When I Pretend to Fall in full.

Burger Records presents Fletcher C. Johnson, Tough Shits, Zig Zags, Habibi, Peach Kelli Pop, Dirty Fences @ Death By Audio (FREE)
Party-loving California label Burger is presenting this free show tonight which will surely be wild, wooly and beer-soaked. Philly’s glammy Tough Shits are one of the highlights.

Lee Fields & The Expressions, Nick Waterhouse @ Webster Hall
It’s a double-dose of old-school soul, with grand master Lee Fields and young true-believer Nick Waterhouse.

Calvin Love, Rush Midnight, Mood Rings, Heavenly Beat, Glass Gang, Ski Lodge, Ice Choir, Ghost Wave, Grand Resort, Bright Future, Cities Aviv @ Fontana’s
Do you like The ’80s? Fairlight synths? Wispy vocals? Undeniable pop melodies? Do you think that Prefab Sprout, Scritti Politti and The Style Council are the best bands ever? You will probably like most of the bands on this line-up.

Tony Conrad, Amen Dunes & Tom Thayer, Lee Noble @ Issue Project Room
IPR continues its 10-year Anniversary tonight with violinist and composer Tony Conrad, and a collaborative performance by Amen Dunes & Tom Thayer.

Oh Mercy, Grandchildren, Emperors, TV Girl, South of France @ Lit
This showcase is pretty much your only nighttime chance to catch LA group TV Girl during CMJ.

Yuck, Eagulls, Willis Earl Beal, Absolutely Free, Pete Bauer, PUP @ Mercury Lounge
Yuck and Eagulls both play BV day parties (and a lot of other CMJ shows) and if you’re going, do check out Canadian group Absolutely Free (ex-DD/MM/YYY) who play Can-style krautrock.

Total Slacker, Sweet Bulbs, Advaeta, Honduras, Tank, Slonk Donkerson, Haybaby @ Silent Barn
This is a pretty good line-up overall, but the real draw here is that gone-to-soon shoegazers Sweet Bulbs are reuniting for one night only.

Celestial Shore, Hookworms, Spires, TEEN, Total Slacker, The Belle Game, Wilsen, Ski Lodge, Palehound, Tiny Ruins @ Pianos
One of the better overall line-ups of the night, and an easy way to tick-off some hotly-tipped CMJ bands (Hookworms, Spires, Tiny Ruins, Palehound).

More notable Friday options are listed below, but for all of tonight’s shows, and tomorrow’s, check out our full NYC show calendar.
