Usually, it is the street artists who work under the cover of darkness, hoping to evade police detection as they scrawl graffiti on property that is not their own.

But before dawn on Tuesday, it was the owner of a building in Queens who used a crew of painters to work overnight and paint over graffiti on a warehouse in Long Island City, wiping clean a canvas that was used by thousands of artists over the years to transform an otherwise nondescript, abandoned brick building in a working-class neighborhood into 5Pointz, a mecca for street artists from around the world.

By morning, the work of some 1,500 artists had been wiped clean, the Brobdingnagian bubble letters and the colorful cartoons spray painted on the building's brick walls all covered in a fresh coat of white paint.

"We are supposed to be the vandals, but this is the biggest rag and disrespect in the history of graffiti," said Marie Cecile Flageul, an unofficial curator for 5Pointz.

The plan to convert the three-acre site into a $400 million development project that will include two glass towers and 1,000 new luxury apartments had provoked opposition from artists and their supporters. But after months of public debate, court hearings and political maneuvering, opponents had little left in their arsenal.

In a last-ditch effort to stop the development, they were hoping to have the building designated as a landmark. That option is now likely gone as well.

"I don't know how you can erase 12 years of spectacular art," said Hans Von Rittern, a guide who arrived with a busload of tourists, only to find the building's art gone. "It's cruel." - [NY Times]

Located right by MoMA PS 1, 5Pointz was one of the most iconic buildings in Long Island City. The building is due to be torn down before the end of the year. It'll be missed.

Lol. It's cruel because you can no longer make money off your busloads of tourists.

what a sad thing it must be to be a real estate developer.

Congrats transplants on ruining NYC. I guess it is still better than whichever midwestern town you moved from.

Posted by Anonymous | November 19, 2013 3:35 PM

Fuck all you dicks for whining about this. How can you feel entitled to something you don't own? The owner of this site was nice enough to allow these graffiti "artists" to use it for 12 years.

all my prays

Posted by Anonymous | November 19, 2013 3:37 PM

i hate graffiti but why would they paint over it? just dynamite the place. it would be cooler.

Posted by Anonymous | November 19, 2013 3:39 PM

I think they painted over it so it can't be declared as a landmark. Have to reluctantly agree with @337. It's the guy's property and his right to do what he wants with it.

Posted by Anonymous | November 19, 2013 3:58 PM

It was probably painted over to prevent it being designated a landmark, and generally to dampen any demonstrations before later demolition. And was done in the middle of the night to avoid demonstrations during the repainting.

On couldn't expect that an abandoned building covered in graffiti was going to last forever.

New luxury condos are never a good thing, but graffiti is dumb as fuck.

Posted by Anonymous | November 19, 2013 4:05 PM

They painted over it to alleviate themselves of the communities desire to get landmark status due to the artwork. No more artwork no more delay and time to demo. Im ok with them demoing this building as its their right but its a bummer they whitewashed this without telling anyone. unfortunate. i bet the owners will no longer allow the artists to paint on the new buildings which was the plan before all the hoopla.

Great, can't wait to move in!

Posted by Anonymous | November 19, 2013 4:53 PM

the new buildings are supposed to have studio space for people to paint the street-art but I don't think they were going to be allowed to paint the new buildings

Posted by Anonymous | November 19, 2013 5:24 PM

Why spend the money to paint it if they plan to tear it down?

Posted by Allan | November 19, 2013 6:03 PM

low income hipster housing?

Posted by Anonymous | November 19, 2013 7:23 PM

Stop whining and buy a damn etch-a-sketch.

Posted by OhioArtisan | November 19, 2013 7:34 PM

The thing is those developers are just gonna start another housing crisis. There are too many developments being made, but who the fuck is moving into them? Ya, few people. They sit there, and never sell. Builders are there own worst enemies cause they build to much shit. No one wants to live out in queens besides D.

Criminal

Would've been a nice gesture to set a end date so people could see it one more time before it was gone forever. Like they did with that building on spring st before they turned it into condos.

Posted by Anonymous | November 19, 2013 9:58 PM

It's fucking eyesore ghetto graffiti, get a fucking grip. You can see this ugly shit all over the city and almost always where it ruins the landscape. Fucking hipsters whining about trendy shit again.

'Problem I had with 5 Pointz is it actually went against the graf ethos. Graf is supposed to be thrown up all over not be enshrined in one place.

Posted by D | November 20, 2013 7:48 AM

^

KING (D)OUCHE is now dictating what graffiti is supposed to be.

Posted by Anonymous | November 20, 2013 8:49 AM

I'm not dictating how graf should be dumbass, I'm saying how I see it, and how I see it is it's supposed to be put up all over hence "graffiti" not "art", and not held up as some art form in one place, or shrine, since true graf isn't art. Ask any old graf head if he bombed trains to be artistic and he'll say no, he bombed it so he could get his name out there and fuck shit up. Creative and expressive yeah, but artistic? No. The bombers didn't look at it as art, or consider themselves artists, they looked at it as a rebellious, subversive thing to do. Anyone who says otherwise is looking back and calling it art in retrospect.

BTW too fucking bad if you don't see it how I do or like it motherfucker.

Posted by D | November 20, 2013 10:26 AM

PINHEA(D) explaining the finer points of street art. He said blah, blah, blah.

Fuckin fruitcake.
