While they have a new album out — their first in six years — and do perform songs from it and older favorites, seeing The Blow live has never been a standard concert experience. Khaela Maricich is more a performance artist who writes pop songs than anything else, with funny monologues and close interaction with the audience (sometimes purposefully awkward) being as much the point as The Blow’s undeniably catchy tunes.

This was the case at Music Hall of Williamsburg on Sunday (11/10). With conspirator Melissa Dyne controlling the music from a platform in the middle of the main floor, Maricich crowd-surfed, danced around on stage, and popped a sculpted cluster of silver balloons. For those who don’t mind a bit of the theatre (and enjoy likeminded Pacific Northwest types like Miranda July), The Blow’s charms are many.

Austin’s Love Inks, whose new album Generation Club is full of warm, minimal pop, opened the night. Pictures from the whole evening are in this post.
