Body/Head at Saint Vitus in June (more by Fred Pessaro)
Browse our full NYC show calendar for all of tonight’s shows. Here are some highlights…
Jonathan Richman, Hilton Valentine @ Bowery Ballroom
Modern Lover Jonathan Richman has been a continuously active solo artist for decades, and it’s been a pretty regular thing that he comes by NYC to do a multi-night run here at least once a year. Tonight he returns for his first of two Bowery Ballroom shows.
Neil Finn @ Le Poisson Rouge
One of the great songwriters of the last 30+ years, Neil Finn has had a long career, making thoughtful pop in Split Enz, Crowded House and on many solo records.
Body/Head, Kathleen Hanna (DJ Set), Ad Rock (DJ Set) @ MoMA
Kim Gordon’s current project Body/Head has been pretty active lately. They just played a benefit at Issue Proejct Room last week, and now they’re playing this MoMA show as part of the venue’s PopRally series, which “features collaborations with artists and musical acts, performances, film screenings, receptions, and special viewings of exhibitions.” Kathleen Hanna (Bikini Kill, Le Tigre, The Julie Ruin) DJs. Update: Kathleen dropped off, but her husband Ad Rock (of the Beastie Boys) replaced her.
Angel Haze @ Webster Hall
Rapper Angel Haze has some very impressive singles and an EP out, and she’s a fierce performer too. Her debut album still awaits a release date, but she she hasn’t been inactive. She’s been releasing freestyles that contain some genuinely intense stuff. Tonight should get interesting.
High Highs, Grand Resort, Lydia Ainsworth @ Cameo Gallery
Australia’s High Highs combine acoustic guitars and airy synths for an enticingly melodic sound; Grand Resort make indiepop inspired by the ’80s UK indiepop scene and do it very well.
The Veda Rays, Eastern Hollows, BNLX, Ponyhof, The Charlie Watts Riots, No Sinner @ Pianos
Right in the middle of this jam-packed bill are Minneapolis’ BNLX who cheekily mix a decade’s worth of post-punk influences into a highly-enjoyable, very loud sound.
World’s Fair, RatKing, The Incomparable, Shakespeare, G4SHi @ SOB’s
World’s Fair have been one of the more exciting NYC rap groups to come up lately, and after having played many recent local shows as an opener, tonight they headline a NYC gig at SOB’s.
Paul Johnson, Anthony Naples, Star Eyes, Free Magic @ Output
VICE’s electronic branch THUMP are presenting Output’s weekly INPUT party this week. Among other things, it includes upcoming NYC producer Anthony Naples, who is worth showing up for.
Computer Magic, White Gallery, Larry Gus @ Baby’s All Right
It’s a night on the synthy side with the lovely pop sounds of Computer Magic and the off-kilter stylings of DFA artist Larry Gus.
Chip Taylor @ The Cutting Room
Having written both “Angel of the Morning” and “Wild Thing,” Chip Taylor has also written dozens of songs for the likes of Hollies, Linda Ronstadt, and Willie Nelson. He is also, believe it or not, Jon Voight’s brother.
MINKS, ARP @ Mercury Lounge
MINKS made the switch from murky dour post-punk, to bright jangly pop (still with a UK bent) on this year’s terrific Tides End.
Nicole Atkins @ MOSCOT LES
Underrated singer-songwriter Nicole Atkins performs for free at this high-end eyeglass chain’s Low East Side store.
Tonstartssbandht, Pink Noise, Jayyce, Jerry Pape @ Silent Barn
Experimental band Tonstartssbandht and/or its members’ other projects have been playing NYC a lot lately, and tonight’s another chance to catch their wacky, noisy tunes live.
Kim Ann Foxman, Pat Mahoney, Amber Valentine, Murray Hill, Merkin Muffley, Angel Favorite @ Union Pool
Tonight Union Pool hosts the seventh PAT party, JD Samson’s “new dance party for anyone from anywhere wearing anything and loving whoever they want. Video screens with video art. Amazing DJ’s and people willing to let go. PAT is everybody mixed up together.” Lineup includes Kim Ann Foxman (Hercules and Love Affair), Pat Mahoney (LCD Soundsystem), Kathleen Hanna’s pal Murray Hill, Amber Valentine, and more.
A Beacon in the Smog: Comedy Benefit for Grist.org @ The Bell House
Eugene Mirman, Wyatt Cenac, David Cross, Eleanor Friedberger and Kurt Braunohler perform tonight to raise money for environmental news website Grist.org. Sold Out.
