Fucked Up at 285 Kent in 2011 (more by Keith Marlowe)
Fucked Up

You may have noticed that following last night's Maria Minerva show (12/19) at Brooklyn's 285 Kent, there are no more upcoming shows scheduled at the venue. (The only other one would have been the Don Giovanni showcase, which has since been taken off-sale.) We've heard the rumor, but 285 Kent representatives have not officially confirmed that the Williamsburg DIY venue is closing. Todd P did say though, that despite a claim by Gothamist, "last night was not the last show ever at 285." One of the venue's reps, Ric Leichtung, also tweeted "Beyond tonight, we have not announced any other events at 285 Kent, though there may be others in the future."

If the venue does close for good, it'd be a sad loss for the Brooklyn music scene. It's been home to many great local shows, some especially exciting surprises like the one where A$AP Rocky and Grimes showed up, the Trash Talk show where Odd Future showed up, and just a number of wild shows by everyone from Fucked Up to Thee Oh Sees (who also unfortunately are going on hiatus).

Did someone finally realize that it was a gross fire hazard?

Put a donut on top of it.

Posted by Anonymous | December 20, 2013 12:05 PM

sounds like they got a visit from the health inspector that is gonna lead to the place being shuttered "officially", but they'll still do stuff on the down low until it's really over.

Another Todd P venue closing! What a surprise...

Posted by Anonymous | December 20, 2013 12:11 PM

Expand Glasslands please.

Posted by Anonymous | December 20, 2013 12:14 PM

Good riddance to this mold-infused, carcinogenic fire-hazard deathtrap.

Posted by Anonymous | December 20, 2013 12:14 PM

Good riddance. This venue fucking sucks. They attract the worst crowds, and the shows run super late. It bothers me that some hardcore bands have seemed to take to the venue. They need to play elsewhere.

Let's be honest, pretty much everything desirable on Kent is on it's way out.

Posted by Anonymous | December 20, 2013 12:15 PM

"Authentic Brooklyn Loft for Rent"

Enquire within.

Posted by Anonymous | December 20, 2013 12:18 PM

worst sound ever. good riddance.

Posted by Anonymous | December 20, 2013 12:20 PM

ohno! where am i going to get it sucked?

Posted by Anonymous | December 20, 2013 12:20 PM

thanks for illustrating my point, 12:22

Posted by Anonymous | December 20, 2013 12:31 PM

Has a woman ever been spotted at that sausage fest club?

Posted by Anonymous | December 20, 2013 12:33 PM

Terrible acoustics. Also, has anyone else noticed that all they have is "parties" now? Which I guess is paying money to pay money for drinks and dance...? Instead of going to, like, a bar?

Posted by Anonymous | December 20, 2013 12:45 PM

So glad this closed down. Rough trade is definitely meant for real new yorkers

Posted by Anonymous | December 20, 2013 12:49 PM

Two of the worst shows I've ever seen. Crowds are super lame, in addition to it being a complete death trap. Everything about that place is just off.

Posted by Anonymous | December 20, 2013 1:00 PM

Hope DbA and Glasslands survive for a bit longer. But once the Domino condos are up, their days are probably numbered

Posted by Anonymous | December 20, 2013 1:19 PM

The only people sad about this closing are the ones who moved to New York in 2011 and don't know any better.

Posted by Anonymous | December 20, 2013 1:23 PM

Thee Oh Sees was my favorite show there this year. I always had a good time dancing and drinking cheap beer whenever I went. I look forward to seeing what Todd opens next. To everyone at the venue - Thank you for your efforts. Many of us appreciate them.

Posted by Anonymous | December 20, 2013 1:29 PM

You had to figure this place's days were numbered when they started doing construction on the Domino condos. How soon until Glasslands closes?

Also, Todd's not dumb. He just opened that new place Trans Pecos, and keeps saying that the Market Hotel is coming soon.

Only time I was there was in the middle of the summer and the electricity went out. The band played in the dark, which woulda been OK if it hadn't been packed and 113 degrees inside. Won't miss this place at all.

Looks like Xmas came early for many! Hooray. Good riddance.

Posted by Anonymous | December 20, 2013 2:20 PM

Please close Glasslands next.

I didn't hate 285 Kent like I hate Glasslands but most of these criticisms are valid - it was a bit large for a DIY venue and the poor ventilation, terrible sound and lack of any way to see the stage unless you were 7' tall were all significant drawbacks.

And I agree the condo yuppies will exterminate anything cool remaining from Bedford on west.

Plenty of great places to hang out and see live music that aren't shutting down.

Posted by Anonymous | December 20, 2013 2:33 PM

@1:23 says the guy who moved here in 2010.

Posted by Anonymous | December 20, 2013 2:37 PM

I'm 1:23, and I've been here a hell of a lot longer than 2010. I remember a ton of the old DIY places, but like 285, its always a temporary thing when its not legal and the neighborhood is changing rapidly.

The sad obituaries for this place are going to be written by people who don't have anything to which to compare it, ie, those people that haven't been here long enough to remember any of the dozens of other ToddP places that have come and gone, some of which were a stone's throw from 285 Kent.

Posted by Anonymous | December 20, 2013 2:43 PM

It sounds like Todd P owns Market Hotel and is not dependent on any landlord, so that venue should be around for a long time.

Posted by Anonymous | December 20, 2013 3:00 PM

my favorite venue. it was different from other DIY spaces...more room, for one thing. better shows, for another. grateful that Todd held it together there so long.

Posted by Anonymous | December 20, 2013 5:28 PM

wasn't this always just a place todd p used till market hotel was to reopen?

Posted by Anonymous | December 20, 2013 5:46 PM

How about Detroit? Move to Detroit, make that shit cool and get kicked out in ten years. Sound good?

Posted by Anonymous | December 20, 2013 6:04 PM

Yeah, 285 Kent is basically done. Maybe in a month or two from now, there might be hope but I honestly doubt it. Anyone who was around last night at the Maria Minerva show can tell you. There was just a dark feeling in the air, definitely bad vibes. I'm gonna miss that spot. Grimes played my birthday party there in 2011 and performed Visions before anyone knew it was coming out. Definitely had a lot of fun times in the bathroom there too. I maybe mopped the floor of 285 Kent over 70 times and I've definitely passed out on that shitty couch at least once. Death By Audio is going to be the next one to drop, mark my words. I predict the scene is going to move to Ridgewood next, there are a lot of spaces in that neighborhood that promoters are jumping on but I've said too much already.

RIP 285 Kent

Why?

Posted by Only Bill Is Real | December 20, 2013 8:02 PM

I still believe in north brooklyn

I mean I like Ridgewood & Bushwick & whatever the one is south of Bushwick but I wish there were more places in walking distance of St. Vitus.

Posted by Anonymous | December 20, 2013 8:43 PM

the hummus at 285 kent was always sub-par

Posted by Anonymous | December 20, 2013 8:44 PM

won't miss the sound from 285 Kent bleeding into Glasslands

Posted by Anonymous | December 20, 2013 9:13 PM

Glasslands kinda sucks compared to rough trade.

Posted by Anonymous | December 20, 2013 9:27 PM

Todd P is like the king transplant, right?

Posted by Anonymous | December 20, 2013 10:01 PM

Further proof of the Starbucksifacation of the live music scene in NYC.

Bowery taking over more and more with a smaller sized room at Rough Trade I'm sure has something to do with this.

Fuck that place.

Posted by Anonymous | December 20, 2013 10:55 PM

10:55 still hasn't realized that alternative/indie music in 2013 = completely fucking dead.

Posted by Anonymous | December 20, 2013 11:30 PM

Rough Trade literally has zero to do with 285 closing. Not even one iota of effect. Its not even on the South side. This is ALL about the Domino Condos and that block in particular.

Posted by Anonymous | December 21, 2013 1:00 AM

@11:30 Anon

It isn't dead, it is just marinating in the fog first.

Posted by ghosty | December 21, 2013 1:28 AM

I can't believe people are still complaining about that dunkin donuts

Posted by Anonymous | December 21, 2013 4:03 PM

Good, fuck hipster scum !

Posted by Cunt Roller | December 21, 2013 10:30 PM

Good! One hipster venue down two to go, the next ones being The Acheron and Death By Audio.

Posted by Anonymous | December 22, 2013 1:38 PM

shit this sucks

Posted by Anonymous | December 24, 2013 8:27 PM

One of if not thee worst sounding venues in NYC. Will not be missed.

Posted by Anonymous | January 3, 2014 12:02 PM

i liked 285 kent because you could sneak in drugs and alcohol and use them openly

Posted by Anonymous | January 3, 2014 7:45 PM

24:51 They took down the original video to replace the original pic that had a group of people in their underwear making out, with one blonde girl in the front, topless.
