Alarms & Controls

Dischord Records "supergroup" Alarms and Controls (featuring members of '90s-era Dischord bands Circus Lupus and The Crownhate Ruin, and others) released their debut LP Clovis Points last month, and just came to NYC for their first show here at the BrooklynVegan/Exploding In Sound party at Death by Audio last night (12/12). The band is made up of veteran musicians, and from the way they play, that's instantly clear. They mix fidgety post-punk and dissonant post-hardcore in a masterful way, with tons of complexities that came off as a natural part of the band's sound, rather than a show-offy way to win over fans. Still, Chris Hamley's fretwork was pretty amazing to watch and a highlight of the show.

If you missed Alarms and Controls last night, or just want to see them again, they'll be hanging around for another NYC show at Cake Shop tonight (12/13) with Life Size Maps and Poor Lily. 8 PM doors, $10 admission.

The rest of the BV/EIS party was great too, with Slow Warm Death kicking things off with the heaviest and most intense set of the night, the blues of Slothrust, Toronto's PUP showing that if their new label home of SideOneDummy helps them get on bigger stages they're absolutely ready for it, and poppy Brooklyn punks Chumped ending with the most flat-out fun set of the night.

Chumped also play their last show of 2013 at Lulu's tonight (12/13) with Broadcaster, American Hellfire Club, and Remnants (first show). It's free and there's free pizza with every beer. 8 PM start. Chumped also open for Iron Chic in February.
