Cult Leader are basically the great nouveau-metalcore band Gaza sans vocalist Jon Parkin. Gaza broke up earlier this year in the aftermath of some highly public rape allegations leveled against Parkin. Though the allegations never led to a criminal case and were eventually kinda-sorta retracted, the surrounding drama seemed to have played a role in their decision to disband.

Fortunately, Cult Leader have picked up pretty much exactly where Gaza left off -- bassist Anthony Lucero has moved over to vocals, but the jarring rhythms, endless skronk chords, and titanic low end all remain intact. The band have signed a deal with Deathwish Inc. (who are coming off a year of Deafheaven-fueled success) and released a new tune, "Skin Crawler," from their debut EP, Nothing For Us Here, which will be out in April.

I'll miss Parkin's imposing physical presence at Cult Leader's live shows, but I'm mostly just happy that this incredibly talented group has elected to carry on in the same vein. Stream "Skin Crawler" below.

This song is excellent. Bummer Gaza broke up, but I'm definitely looking forward to hearing the rest of this album.

There is never going to be peace if the folks in Gaza have a deathwish!

Awesome that they're signed already, they're good enough musicians that they kinda deserve to get right back on the horse. They don't deserve to get dragged down with their asshole ex-singer (a factor which I'm assuming was the "agreement" which lead to the retraction of the public accusation - she was friends with the entire band, not just the rapist who betrayed her trust)

yeah, like, the rape accusations are only that, right?

Posted by Anonymous | December 12, 2013 10:30 PM

^ Accusations are only that until proven.

As always, very disappointed to see people continuing to label a man a rapist because someone posted it on tumblr. Not just 'someone,' but rather someone who felt that Gaza breaking up would be sufficient justice for her "rape." I still believe in innocent until proven guilty.

innocent until proven guilty is why millions of rapists walk among us completely free, ready, and willing to rape again and again, enabled by a culture of brotality against all women
they keep shoplifters in jail until their trial, yet chemically castrating a rapist (a reversible procedure) to protect his victims is considered cruel and unusual punishment to this institutionally sick and twisted society, so that if and when he finally goes to trial, it is with the smug attitude that he has gotten away with so many more atrocious crimes in the meantime

"innocent until proven guilty is why millions of rapists walk among us completely free, ready, and willing to rape again and again, enabled by a culture of brotality against all women."

The fact that someone can write this without a hint of irony is very disturbing. It is also funny in this particular case, because the supposed rapist is and will remain "completely free" not because of innocent until proven guilty, but because his accuser took to a blog and demanded he resign from his band. If that sort of accusation is something that our society has decided to take seriously, I think we are on a dangerous road.
