Metallica

You may remember Metallica setting the highly-sought-after world record for "rock band that has played on the most continents" a few weeks back by playing a gig in Antarctica for a selection of South American fans. You can watch a video of the entire set below if you missed it the first time around.

In a move that will hopefully surprise nobody, the band have elected to monetize this momentous occasion by making the audio available for paid download in a variety of formats. They're calling it Freeze'em All, missing yet another opportunity for a well-placed Trapped Under Ice joke. Seriously, guys, if you're gonna get punny about this show, pluck the low-hanging fruit. I personally wasn't at all impressed by the amp-modeler guitar tones that the band employed for the Antarctica gig, especially given that there are tons of nice-sounding modelers on the market these days. You can score an Axe FX II for a couple grand -- chump change for these guys. Or maybe their guitar techs are just terrible at dialing modelers in? Pure speculation, but again, you can check the video out below and judge for yourself.

In related news: Metallica will continue their globe-trotting next year with a South American tour in March and a European tour in May, June and July. Ticket purchasers get to choose 17 of the planned 18-song set list by vote; the 18th tune will be their first new song since their infamous LuLu collaboration with Lou Reed.

The European tour has another notable feature -- it conflicts with the now two-year-old Orion Festival, thus nixing the fest for 2014, according to Rolling Stone. (It was in Detroit last year.) Its future is now up in the air; the band hasn't ruled out the possibility of resurrecting it in 2015 but don't seem to have definite plans.

Check the aforementioned Antarctica video, the Freeze'em All (seriously, come on!) track listing, and Metallica's 2014 dates thus far below.

All the best songs of metalica and this type of genre is always the coolest. I like a wild rock and a kind of energetic music.

It sounds stock, James. It sounds stock to my ears!

It sounded like they were a high school band playing through some starter Crate amps. Of course they would try and capitalize on one of their worst performances.

I hope pro musicians see this joker's blog so they can offer him some better seats from which to better hear performances he attends: seats in hell.
