Lauryn Hill at Governors Island in 2011 (more by Dana (distortion) Yavin)
Lauryn Hill

Browse our full NYC show calendar for all of tonight’s shows. Here are some highlights…

Vampire Weekend @ ‘Live From The Artist’s Den’
Vampire Weekend, who are showing up on tons of best of 2013 lists and sure to appear on even more, are closing out the year where they made the jump to an arena with something much more intimate. (You had to win tickets to see this taping.)

VietNam, Hairy Sands, Statuette, DJ {{{mr. king @ Baby’s All Right
Longrunning Brooklyn band Vietnam returned after a five-year abscence to deliver A.merican D.ream, their first album in five years and a welcome comeback.

Iron and Wine, Calexico, Nick Lowe, Glen Hansard, Kathleen Edwards, Beth Orton, Amos Lee @ Beacon Theater
It’s WFUV’s holiday show at Beacon Theatre, and they’ve got an officially stacked lineup of folk-related artists. If this kind of music is your thing, there’s so much to dig here, and this one’s not to miss.

Lauryn Hill @ Bowery Ballroom
Neo-soul great Lauryn Hill is back in action, having played a Bowery Ballroom show late last month and she’s only a few days away from beginning her short tour. Before that she returns to Bowery Ballroom tonight.

Blackalicious, Lushlife @ Brooklyn Bowl
San Francisco duo Blackalicious made one of the conscious rap albums of the ’00s with 2002’s Blazing Arrow, which still sounds fresh today.

The Black Keys, Miguel, A$AP Rocky, Mikky Ekko, Lykke Li @ Highline Ballroom
This benefit show for Arms Around the Child is $2000 to get into, but if you’re able to donate that much for this good cause, the lineup pretty much speaks for itself.

Lupe Fiasco, Stalley, Mickey Factz, Boy Illinois, Kris Kasanova, Chris Cartier @ Irving Plaza
Lupe Fiasco plans to release his new album Tetsuo and Youth in early 2014 (so, in non-rap speak, basically whenever), but until then he’ll be doing some shows, including four nights in the NYC-area this month.

CHVRCHES @ McKittrick Hotel
Scottish electro-pop trio CHVRCHES are doing two intimate, somewhat private/exclusive NYC shows this week, including tonight’s, which you had to enter SiriusXM’s contest to get into.

Danny Brown, Superchunk, Charli XCX @ Music Hall of Williamsburg
This is SPIN‘s holiday show and it’s got a great lineup, especially for such an intimate environment. You had to win tickets to get into this one.

Luke Temple, Steve Marion, Sam Owens, Daniel Carter, Austin Vaughn @ Union Pool
This is the first week of Luke Temple’s “improvisational” December residency. Expect the unexpected. Also, expect “Delicate” Steve Marion and others to appear tonight.

Muscle Worship, Raccoon Fighter, Happy Nothing, Tidal Arms @ Glasslands
Muscle Worship are somewhat related to The Appleseed Cast (they share a drummer, a hometown, and have toured together), but they’re much more aggressive than that band has been in years. Also of note is the heavy, atmospheric Tidal Arms.

Austin Lucas, Allison Weiss, PJ Bond, Meghann Wright @ Knitting Factory
The most exciting part of this bill is punky singer/songwriter Allison Weiss, whose songs are pretty likeable if you’re into that sort of stuff, and the rest of the bill is relatively likeminded to Allison too.
