Stars of the Lid in NYC in 2008 (more by Chris Owyoung)
Stars of the Lid

Browse our full NYC show calendar for all of tonight’s shows. Here are some highlights…

Stars of the Lid @ The Basilica of Our Lady of Perpetual Help
Veteran ambient duo Stars of the Lid are playing their first US shows in five years this month, and having just played the Kranky 20th Anniversary in Chicago, tonight they do it in NYC. Like the Chicago show, they’ll be joined by the 10-piece Wordless Music Orchestra tonight.

Yasiin Bey (fka Mos Def) @ Highline Ballroom(POSTPONED)
Though it was initially announced that Mos Def and Talib Kweli (aka Black Star) would be playing Brooklyn Bowl tonight, that’s not actually happening and instead Mos Def was then to bring his time-tested rhymes to Highline Ballroom…but that has now been POSTPONED.

Sage the Gemini, Iamsu @ Highline Ballroom
Sage the Gemini and Iamsu had something of an internet rap hit with their collaborative track “Gas Pedal” this year, and tonight they join forces for the early show at Highline Ballroom.

Spank Rock, Body Language, DJ Sliink, Cakes Da Killa, Pegasus Warning, DJ Mursi Layne @ Music Hall of Williamsburg
Afro-Punk curated this Red Bull Sound Select show that leans most heavily on hip hop and electronic music, and should be a pretty crazy time. Admission is $3 with RSVP or $10 without.

Luke Temple, Ryan Seaton, Jeremy Gustin & Indigo Street, Adam Schatz @ Union Pool
It’s the final night of Luke Temple’s (of Here We Go Magic) improvisational residency at Union Pool tonight, and the support includes Ryan Seaton (of Callers), Jeremy Gustin & Indigo Street (of Delicate Steve), and Adam Schatz (of Man Man and others).

Har Mar Superstar, Lizzo, Computer Magic, See Through, DJ Jenny Eliscu @ Bowery Ballroom
The highly entertaining Har Mar Superstar is doing his “Obnoxiously Non-Denominational Holiday Party” at Bowery Ballroom tonight with support from Minneapolis rapper Lizzo, who played a CMJ show with P.O.S./Marijuana Deathsquads, the synthy Computer Magic, and others.

Blondes, Mas Ysa, DJ Dog Dick, Motion Graphics @ Baby’s All Right
Pretty good local bill at Baby’s tonight with dance duo Blondes, rising one-man indie pop band Mas Ysa, the multi-genre DJ Dog Dick, and others.

Bennio Qwerty, Sediment Club, Bad History Month, Bueno @ Death by Audio
It’s the NYC date of the Exploding In Sound-signed noisy/folky Bad History Month, and BHM will be joined by solid local acts, including loud rockers Bennio Qwerty and no wavers Sediment Club.

Brazos, Ski Lodge @ Mercury Lounge
A good double bill of guitar pop here, with Brazos’ more dusty approach, and Ski Lodge cribbing from ’80s UK jangle.

Ikue Mori @ The Stone
Ikue Mori’s residency at The Stone starts tonight and continues through Sunday (12/22). Tonight her duo with Zeena Parkins, Phantom Orchard, plays the early show at 8 PM, and then Ikue and Zeena are joined by Koichi Makigami, Cyro Baptista, and Erik Friedlander for a Phantom Orchard quintet set at 10 PM.

Pretty Good Friends Holiday Show w/ Eugene Mirman @ The Bell House
Eugene Mirman’s “Pretty Good Friends” show does its holiday edition tonight with Daniel Kitson, Derrick Brown, Janelle James, and special guests. Tickets are still available for what should be a night of lots of laffs.

“The Best Show on WFMU” final broadcast
After 13 years on the air, Tom Scharpling’s “The Best Show” is signing off after tonight’s show. Expect a guest-filled goodbye. 9 – midinight.
