Prince at SXSW 2013 (more by John Sciulli)
Browse our full NYC show calendar for all of tonight's shows. Here are some highlights...
Prince @ Mohegan Sun Arena
Prince never slows down, having spent most of 2013 playing epic-length shows and releasing a series of digital singles that found him regaining some creative juice (and his classic sound). Tonight's the first of three holiday shows he's got lined up at Mohegan Sun.
Patti Smith @ The Space at Westbury
The Godmother of Punk still lives up to that title, delivering fantastic sets that span her almost-4-decade-long career which includes a number of stone cold classics. As usual, she's celebrating the end of the year in her hometown of NYC with Webster Hall shows on Sunday and Monday, which are sold out, but she's also in Long Island tonight.
The Bouncing Souls, Laura Stevenson, The Brigantines, Molly and the Zombies @ The Stone Pony
NJ punk heroes The Bouncing Souls are on night 2 of their four-night 'Home for the Holidays' shows at home state venue The Stone Pony tonight. Like every night, there's three openers, all chosen by The Souls, and there's two especially notable ones tonight, including singer/songwriter Laura Stevenson, and a mysterious band called Molly and the Zombies. We're not sure who they are, but we couldn't help but notice that Bouncing Souls pal Brian Fallon has been really obsessed with zombies lately, and that his band The Gaslight Anthem seem to think this band is cool. It's not The Gaslight Anthem themselves though.
H2O, Youth Brigade, Cruel Hand, ShitKill, Angel Dust @ Gramercy Theatre
If you're not headed to the Bouncing Souls tonight but still need a stacked bill of punk, Gramercy Theatre is your place. NYC's H2O not long ago wrapped up a tour supporting Alkaline Trio and New Found Glory, but a smaller headlining show is a much better way to see them. Plus LA punk vets Youth Brigade (who opened for Bouncing Souls last night) are hanging around the area for this show too.
GWAR, Battlecross, Iron Reagan @ Irving Plaza
Nothing says the holidays like the mutant warthog from Hell metal of GWAR. Who knows what antics they'll have cooked up for this week.
Clutch, Into Another, Empire Escorts, Mike Dillon Band @ Starland Ballroom
Stoner rock greats Clutch have an upcoming New Year's Eve show in NYC, but if you wanna catch them sooner than that, you can head to NJ tonight. Also of note on this bill and the NYE one is reunited post-hardcore vets Into Another.
Psychic TV, Heliotropes, House of Blondes @ Brooklyn Night Bazaar
It will be more like A Night Bizarre this weekend when Genesis P. Orridge and crew headline this free shopping/eating/minigolfing space. Having made everything from pure noise, pysch-pop, acid house and everything in between -- this year's Paramartha rattles around ambient blues dirges -- who knows what to expect.
Zedd, Classixx, Alvin Risk, Tommie Sunshine @ Pier 94
Russian-German electronic producer Zedd headlines this big show, but we're partial to the poptronics of Classixx, whose album this year was a lot of fun.
John Zorn Improv Night @ The Stone
The Stone's founder and artistic director John Zorn is in the midst of his annual Improv Week which is a benefit for the venue. Tonight features Uri Gurvich (sax), Eyal Maoz (guitar), Ron Anderson (guitar), Chris Cochrane (guitar), Sylvie Courvoisier (piano), Ikue Mori (electronics), Shanir Blumenkranz (bass), Michael Nicolas (cello), Don McKenzie (drums) and Zorn himself on sax.
The Front Bottoms, HmfO: A Hall and Oates Tribute The Bynars @ Bowery Ballroom
Before The Front Bottoms ring in the new year and head out on an extensive tour in January, the NJ folk punks will squeeze in two last NYC shows of 2013 (both sold out). Tonight's is at Bowery Ballroom, and tomorrow's is at the far more intimate Shea Stadium (and that one doubles as a BV holiday party).
Escort, Exmag, Mun & Special Guests @ BB King's
Brooklyn disco orchestra Escort open for the jammy Disco Biscuits at their New Year's run at Best Buy Theater tonight, but after that they head to BB King's for the afterparty which they'll headline. Special guests are promised.
Valerie June, Michael Daves ft. Jen Larson @ Highline Ballroom
Valerie June is a newcomer with a hell of a voice, and it's no surprise that the powerhouse singer is quickly moving up in the world. Tonight's Highline Ballroom show is her largest headlining gig in NYC yet.
