Dev Hynes w/ Solange at Bowery Ballroom (more by Amanda Hatfield)
Browse our full NYC show calendar for all of tonight's shows. Here are some highlights...
Porches, Krill, Ovlov, Roomrunner, Pile (acoustic), Baked, Average Cock, Dead Wives, Big Ups, Gnarwhal, Grass is Green, Two Inch Astronaut, Bad History Month, Woozy @ Baby's All Right
One of the best labels in indie rock this year was Boston/Brooklyn label Exploding In Sound, who put out some great releases and also threw a number of memorable parties with sweaty fans losing their minds to band after band. To ring in the new year, EIS will do one more of those parties, and with a lineup like this, things could get crazy. Special guests (billed as "average cock") are promised too.
Patti Smith, Belle Ghoul @ Webster Hall
The Godmother of Punk still lives up to that title, delivering fantastic sets that span her almost-4-decade-long career which includes a number of stone cold classics. As usual, she's celebrating the end of the year in her hometown of NYC, and tonight's her second of two sold out Webster Hall shows.
Punch Brothers, The EarRegulars feat Tamar Korn @ Bowery Ballroom
Brooklyn bluegrass band Punch Brothers in the middle of their three-night lead-up to New Year's run at Bowery Ballroom. (Tonight being Night 2.) Tickets are still available.
The Felice Brothers, The Districts @ Brooklyn Bowl
In what's becoming an annual thing, Upstate NY folk rockers The Felice Brothers are wrapping up the year with a short Northeast tour that hits NYC tonight for what will surely be a festive evening. Tickets are still available.
Gayer (Dev Hynes + Samantha Urbani), Mndsgn, Lord Raja @ Trans Pecos
Dev Hynes just played a show with his girlfriend and Blood Orange cohort Samantha Urbani as Lightspeed Champion, and tonight's show at new Todd P venue Trans Pecos (aka old Silent Barn) finds the two under this new billing of Gayer. Who knows what this will be but it's probably worth checking out.
Gogol Bordello, Man Man @ Terminal 5
It wouldn't be New Year's in NYC without the high-energy, vodka-filled gypsy punk sets of Gogol Bordello. They're at Terminal 5 tonight and New Year's Eve, and weirdo rock band Man Man provides quality support.
Major Lazer, Boys Noize, GTA @ Pier 94
If anyone knows how to throw a party, it's Diplo, so tonight's Major Lazer show should be nothing short of a killer time. Plus, both openers aren't too bad at getting a crowd moving themselves.
Phish @ MSG
Love 'em or hate 'em, Phish's New Year's run at Madison Square Garden is always quite the event for jam fans, and it continues tonight, with one show a night leading up to New Year's Eve.
Antibalas @ SOB's
Brooklyn afrobeat band Antibalas are ringing in the new year with a two-night stand at SOB's. They do one show tonight and three different shows tomorrow, so there's plenty of chances to see them.
Alex Bleeker & The Freaks, Shorts @ Mercury Lounge
When Alex Bleeker isn't playing in Real Estate, he's making bluesier, more psychedelic music with his own band, Alex Bleeker & the Freaks.
Dying Fetus, Pyrexia, Car Bomb @ Saint Vitus
It's another NYC year-end show for Long Island's Pyrexia, and this time they're supporting the ignorantly technical slam-centric death metallers Dying Fetus.
