Yo La Tengo @ The Bell House, 12/13/13
Yo La Tengo

Yo La Tengo launched a four-night residency at Brooklyn's Bell House on Friday, playing a double-header set to a crowd of devotees who, in previous years, would've followed the band to their usual mid-December haunt, legendary Hoboken bar/restaurant/music venue Maxwell's.

But Maxwell's closed the doors to its performance space this past summer, leaving that annual series of Hanukkah shows without a home. And while the New Jersey trio have found a new haven in a sold-out room near the Gowanus Canal, frontman Ira Kaplan insisted that the December 13 gig was simply the first in a string of "boring old Yo La Tengo shows," and not the next installment of the treasured Hanukkah franchise, which ran from 2001 to 2012.

So, rather than the usual eight concerts, there are four, and the standard Hanukkah show openers -- a musical act followed by stand-up comedy -- were missing. What remained, though, was the intimacy shared between the audience and the indie-rock lifers. - [SPIN]

Maxwell's is no more and, as the SPIN article mentions above, Yo La Tengo's four sold-out holiday shows at The Bell House were not intended to replace their legendary Hanukah runs at the Hoboken venue (where Maxwell's booker Todd Abramson now works). But they did work a similar intimate vibe over the course of the weekend. Each show worked the same: two sets, one acoustic and one electric, and they opened with "Ohm" and reprised it in the electric set every night. Pictures from Night 1 and setlists from all four shows are in this post, and you can download a recording of the entire show over at NYC Taper.

Man am I glad I was here on the night P2 wasn't.

This is a band that always does the right thing.

Amen, 11:13. Please stop hiring this guy. He's obnoxious and unprofessional.

Yo La Tengo is the band with the biggest gulf between my enjoyment of their records and my enjoyment of their live show. Four nights of YLT live sounds like hell on earth.

Posted by Anonymous | December 18, 2013 1:29 PM

you wouldn't know unless you went all 4 nights like we did

you clearly don't get live music.

Posted by Anonymous | December 18, 2013 2:15 PM

Yeah, I don't like YLT live so i clearly don't get live music...
I've seen them SOOOOO many times live and every time I say it's the last time. NO MORE.

They played two sets, acoustic and electric, switched up songs every night and played different covers every night. Doesn't seem hellish at all to me.

Tara Key! I'm bummed I wasn't able to make any of the shows. Sounds like a lot of fun. Not everyone likes black licorice, but those that do like it REALLY like it!

Yeah, I knew I recognized that photographer from Atoms for Peace at LPR. He was a completely self-interested parasite then, too.

Went to Sunday night and thought it was one of the best (non-Hannukah) Yo La Tengo shows I've seen in recent memory. Great sets!

Posted by Anonymous | December 18, 2013 4:22 PM

That photographer is a fucking jerkbag. Take some pics and get out of the way. Some people wanna see the show in real time. Dick.

Posted by Anonymous | December 18, 2013 4:38 PM

anyone know what encores they did on the first night?

Posted by Anonymous | December 18, 2013 4:51 PM

The recording of the first night is up on our site, encores and all. But the best setlist source for YLT is @big_day_coming on twitter.

Regarding the photographer at this show, PSquared. He is a personal friend of mine. He is one of the best guys around -- he'd tear the shirt off his back for you. He's also a very hard working photographer, and as his work on this site attests, also a very talented one. If he bumped into you at a show to get a shot, it probably didn't really merit you making an anonymous flame in this topic where he posted a large group of photos for your enjoyment at his own expense.

I don't know P2 but I'll take Dan Lynch's word over almost anyone's. Dan if you're still lingering thanks for nyctaper, as always.

5:05 - THANK YOU! the flac files sound great.

Posted by Anonymous | December 18, 2013 6:26 PM

Are the photos actually taken at his own expense?
