a graffiti-less 285 Kent
285 Kent

As you probably know by now, Brooklyn DIY music venue 285 Kent is officially closed for good, having hosted its last-ever show earlier this month. Now that the venue is fully vacated, the space is available to rent for $8,000/month on Craigslist. The listing specifies that "you can make all the noise in the world at night if you desire" (oh yeah?) and says it's "perfect for any kind of commercial use, pop-up store, architect's studio, a photographer's studio, etc... or an amazingly well-located loft space." ... OR A MUSIC VENUE? Maybe someone who can afford it can turn it back into one? Maybe Jay Z and Beyonce?

UPDATE: The listing has been removed from Craigslist. Venue curator Ric Leichtung also tweeted, "I can't verify that this Craigslist ad is real. I would never put 285 Kent up for sale, not that I even could-- I was the space's curator," followed by, "Todd Patrick is 285 Kent's leaseholder. Please forward all inquiries to him about the Craigslist ad at toddpnyc@gmail.com."

UPDATE 2: Todd P responded.

Does anyone *really* miss 285??

Posted by Anonymous | January 30, 2014 2:04 PM

It is Todd. P's email, and this is a sublease. He rents these out too, and it's also listed here. http://www.listwns.com/201312/commercial-office/ny/348269.htm

Interesting how he decided to close the space due to the increase in residential neighbors and the lack of "sustainability."

All smells of greed, money and the value of NYC real estate. Todd's just another sleazy landlord.

The only people who enjoy seeing shows at DIY spaces like 285 are kids 21 and under who don't really know any better.

Posted by Anonymous | January 30, 2014 2:06 PM

too much talk of Todd P here and everywhere. DIY existed in NY long before he arrived. Was it a brand yet? No . . . and that's the problem. Todd P is a businessman and this sub-let speaks to the reality of his practice. Everyone who romanticizes his rhetoric is too young and clueless about NYC music and art history.

Reached a deal with the P-man. The space will be opening soon under new management. 285 Kent shall now be known as the 7-Point-Five Cock.

Why do people not like kent? they don't like watching up coming artist preform? Do they really like terminal 5?

lemme know bb

Posted by Anonymous | January 30, 2014 4:39 PM

I didn't like it because it was full most of the time with entitled douches with hyper-inflated self concepts, full of cigarette smoke (take that shit outside), and poor restroom facilities. Overall shitty experience most of the time.

Posted by Anonymous | January 30, 2014 5:04 PM

^^ I loved it for all the reasons you hated it.

Posted by Anonymous | January 30, 2014 5:29 PM

MISS U 285

Posted by MP | January 30, 2014 5:37 PM

5:29 never stepped inside 285 (how could you from some cornfield in Indiana?)

Posted by Anonymous | January 30, 2014 5:55 PM

people complain about Midwesterners moving to NYC all the time but it's really the Californians who stink the joint up. You know what happened to North Brooklyn to make less than it used to be? A massive influx of people from SoCal starting around 2005.

Posted by jkie | January 30, 2014 6:17 PM

hey man wer all just hipsters on this earth!! why cant we get along

Posted by Anonymous | January 30, 2014 6:31 PM

285 kent had its own celebrities, just like andy warhols factory

Posted by Anonymous | January 30, 2014 6:32 PM

@5:55 used to smoke like a chimney in there. Honestly, thats the only reason why i loved it was because you could SMOKE inside.

Posted by Anonymous | January 30, 2014 6:34 PM

@5:04 I bet you complain about anti-semitism also.

Posted by Anonymous | January 30, 2014 6:41 PM

i liked it cause it was blow friendly

Posted by Anonymous | January 30, 2014 6:43 PM

at 285 u cud rail a line rite off the front table. no questions asked

Posted by Anonymous | January 30, 2014 6:43 PM

@6:43 you say that as if its a bad thing.

Posted by Anonymous | January 30, 2014 6:45 PM

I could see why you all loved it - no rules. I can respect that, a space with no rules. But some rules are good, to keep the peace and provide a good experience for all. Somewhere between anarchy and dickless roided T5 security goon head busting.

Posted by Anonymous | January 30, 2014 6:45 PM

@6:45 any place that doesn't allow smoking has too many rules.

Posted by Anonymous | January 30, 2014 6:48 PM

at 285 kent you could masturbate and it was totaly chill! !!!!!!!!!!

Posted by Anonymous | January 30, 2014 6:56 PM

Brooklyn is over. Long live Newark.

Posted by Anonymous | January 30, 2014 7:09 PM

the space really rented for $3600 before this?

regardless of the condition, that's *way* under market value for something in that area. $8000 for something of that size isn't at all unreasonable.

and no, i'm not some williamsburg real estate dick or whatever. but that's honestly what it likely costs to get something like that in that area.

Posted by Anonymous | January 30, 2014 7:10 PM

hang on. re-read. so todd's paying $8000 now or he's trying to sub-lease to get $8000 on a $3600 lease, or a net of $4400?

on one hand, good for him. on the other hand, not exactly diy big guy.

Posted by Anonymous | January 30, 2014 7:12 PM

Curator? I saw that asshole Ric calling himself a "curator". dude, if you wanna do that, move to a gallery or a museum. If Ric and Todd want to posture that they are anything beyond dudes booking shows, there's a lot of work to do.

Plus, Williamsbrug and Gpoint was already trending when both these guys moved there, so spare me.

Posted by Anonymous | January 30, 2014 8:42 PM

no dude the type shows that went on at 285 kent were def. of the "curating" nature. if you know your shit about music, you would understand.

Posted by Anonymous | January 30, 2014 8:55 PM

I bet they turn that place into a Verizon Wireless store or something. I'll still be there urinating in the corner, though, so say hi when you see me.

Posted by Anonymous | January 30, 2014 9:02 PM

you can always smoke at phish concerts (the last place where real DIY/punk spirit lives on)

Posted by Anonymous | January 30, 2014 9:05 PM

^ like patchouli....

Posted by Anonymous | January 30, 2014 10:49 PM

Haven't been to a Phish show in 14 years, but 9:05 is sadly pretty correct. Way more freedom and creativity in that band's scene than a lot of what I've seen on the east coast in the last 10 years.

Posted by Anonymous | January 30, 2014 10:53 PM

Hey 6:17, SoCal was moving into north Brooklyn by 2000 if not earlier. I know, I lived with a bunch of them. Maybe 2005 is when YOU got here?

Posted by Anonymous | January 30, 2014 11:07 PM

curate my balls

Posted by balls man | January 31, 2014 12:05 AM

Todd moved here before Wiliamsburg and Greenpoint were "trending". Todd is actually a decent part of the reason Williamsburg and Greenpoint became a thing anyway. I'm not a Todd P apologist, but people really seem to have weird ideas about how all this stuff works. They'll take the parties and the shows but they don't want to know about the nitty gritty. Anyway....

Posted by wweiw | January 31, 2014 2:50 AM

Imbecile called himself a curator.

Posted by Anonymous | January 31, 2014 7:00 AM

Imbecile sits on his ass and judges those who actually go out and do something

Posted by Anonymous | January 31, 2014 8:23 AM

Phish is great, their shows are a whole lot of fun. And while its sad that many of you hate on them it really says more about your dour personalities and inability to loosen up for a second than anything about them or their fans. Really sad, you are.

Posted by Anonymous | January 31, 2014 8:27 AM

coke + a room full of douches + no rules + shitty music = a monumentally shitty scene

good riddance

Posted by Anonymous | January 31, 2014 8:32 AM

the only other place i know of where you can smoke inside is dba unless i'm clueless

Posted by Anonymous | January 31, 2014 8:57 AM

I'm not sure I understand the hate. Even if he's trying to make an easy profit with a sub-lease, what's wrong with that if the venue had gotten word the cops were stopping all future shows? It's not like he doesn't put on worthwhile shows in other places and if this gives him money to operate better or make a profit, good. If he never made money I'm sure they same people mocking would be here mocking him for not making money because... you just anonymously hate him for some weird reason.

DIY venues and small bars are a nice counterbalance to Bowery Presents who are a nice counterbalance to Live Nation. And yeah, I'm old and I was here in the nineties and I don't agree with the person saying DIY was here before 2000. I mean if it was it was so small as to be practically meaningless. You mean ABC No Rio and... that's it? For better or worse Todd P and Rubulad formed the template for a north brooklyn nightlife scene that exploded and is now likely cresting and ending. Though I bet its end is going to be quite belabored. I have no problem with giving him respect for what happened here musically though the 00s. Not sure why others hate him so much, there's never any actual reasoning.

Posted by Anonymous | January 31, 2014 9:44 AM

dba has been non-smoking for years..

Posted by Anonymous | January 31, 2014 9:49 AM

thank you, 9:44.

Posted by Anonymous | January 31, 2014 10:52 AM

People give Todd too much power. That's the key word "give." Face it, you're lazy and you want someone else to do the heavy lifting while you bitch and moan in the corner, except no one gives a fuck about your opinion. You are a sheep, bahh bahh bahh.
