Boston Calling

After spring and fall installments of the Boston Calling Music Festival in 2013, it's been announced that the fest will return again this spring, expanding from 2 to 3 days. It happens from May 23-25 at City Hall Plaza, and though the lineup hasn't been officially announced, the people behind the fest hid 10 vinyls with the lineup printed on it for a Twitter contest. Consequence of Sound points to one of those pictures (above), revealing that artists playing include Death Cab for Cutie, Modest Mouse, Brand New, The Head and the Heart, Tegan & Sara, Jenny Lewis, Frank Turner, Phosphorescent, Built to Spill, Kurt Vile, Warpaint, Cass McCombs and others, not to mention festival favorite JACK JOHNSON. Tickets will be on sale Friday (1/31) at 10 AM via the festival's website.

the whitest show in history

Predictably white male and middle of the line indie. Boston just can't seem to break out of the 2000s. I bet the next installment gets headlined by Interpol.

Haven't Tegan & Sara played this thing three times already, too?

well, that's Boston for ya.

Posted by Anonymous | January 28, 2014 8:50 AM

Hey 8:49 it's been that way alot further back than the 2000s

sponsored by converse and bowery presents

At least they've got Jack Johnson. Ain't a festival without him.

Posted by Anonymous | January 28, 2014 9:11 AM

Their website shows there's another headliner yet to be announced. It's probably some other really white band like the Strokes or Phoenix.

Posted by Anonymous | January 28, 2014 9:13 AM

Has anyone actually listened to the entirety of a Jack Johnson song before they

Jack White has been announced as the other headliner.

Jack Nicholson has been announced as the other headliner.

I was ONCE excited to see Modest Mouse until I realized their live sets consist of nothing but their shitty songs.

Sigh

Sadly

Worst city - Boston or Philly? Discuss. I would rather be in Akron, Oh..

Posted by Anonymous | January 28, 2014 9:33 AM

Jack Lalanne is going to be headlining the workout tent

Posted by Anonymous | January 28, 2014 9:34 AM

Seriously, when are Modest Mouse and Brand New going to get off the pot and shit out new albums already? They've become two bands who've maintained their careers by playing festival dates come the spring and summer with less and less to show for it each year.

Posted by Anonymous | January 28, 2014 9:39 AM

Pixies have been announced as the other headliner.

Posted by Anonymous | January 28, 2014 9:40 AM

Fackin Jack Johnson is hawt. I like him mahr than the facking Drawpkick Murphys!

Posted by Anonymous | January 28, 2014 9:47 AM

Jack Dawson has been announced as the other headliner.

Posted by Anonymous | January 28, 2014 9:49 AM

If you think the Boston music scene is dead, you clearly haven't been following @JennPelly

Posted by Anonymous | January 28, 2014 9:54 AM

@9:54

Could you send some links to Boston bands?

Like seriously not trolling

Posted by Anonymous | January 28, 2014 9:59 AM

Dawson's Creek has been announced as the source of water for the festival.

Posted by Anonymous | January 28, 2014 10:00 AM

White people. White.

Posted by Anonymous | January 28, 2014 10:03 AM

Jack Nicklaus will be headlining the Golf Tent.

Posted by Anonymous | January 28, 2014 10:07 AM

brand new should play governors ball.

Posted by Anonymous | January 28, 2014 10:13 AM

Brand new, modest mouse, warpaint. Only bands worth their weight.

Posted by Anonymous | January 28, 2014 10:13 AM

This could have been a great time to book a lot of the current Massachusetts indie rock bands who are all the hype right now, but they didn't. Seriously, no Speedy Ortiz? No California X? Instead, they're importing in a bunch of radio rock staples geared out people who haven't found anything new to listen to since WFNX got turned into a country station.

Posted by Anonymous | January 28, 2014 10:16 AM

Well 1016, it is brought to you by bowery presents. Who books those bands that you just mentioned? I think not BP yet...

Posted by Anonymous | January 28, 2014 10:18 AM

Nobody outside of a 4-block radius in Allston knows who Speedy Ortiz is.

Posted by Anonymous | January 28, 2014 10:20 AM

Based on an admittedly short track record, it appears the May Boston Calling is for white dads, and the September festival is more DJ driven and eclectic. They will sell all the tickets with this lineup so I doubt that will change much.

Posted by Anonymous | January 28, 2014 10:34 AM

Lineup announced. That's a pretty small amount of bands per day for 2 stages

Posted by Anonymous | January 28, 2014 11:24 AM

I think Boston is single-handedly keeping the pockets of Death Cab for Cutie and Tegan and Sara lined.

Posted by Anonymous | January 28, 2014 11:27 AM

932, the recent shows or the Marr era shows? Once Marr left the band they started delving into the back catalog a lot more during shows

Posted by Anonymous | January 28, 2014 11:31 AM

Yah, no Speedy Ortiz. In Bahston only one fackin Ortiz Big Papi!

Posted by Anonymous | January 28, 2014 11:38 AM

That new Warpaint album kind of blows

Posted by Anonymous | January 28, 2014 12:03 PM

What do people expect? They built a festival around what Sasquatch throws in the trash

Posted by Anonymous | January 28, 2014 12:27 PM

What about Jack Mayhoff?

Posted by Anonymous | January 28, 2014 12:33 PM

how does this fill 3 days seriously? built to spill and Edward sharpe are the only thing im interested in really

Posted by Anonymous | January 28, 2014 12:36 PM

Still better than almost any festival in NYC. Decent lineup for a festival held within the limits of a large city (not sure how Chicago kills it every year in this regard).

Posted by Anonymous | January 28, 2014 12:44 PM

this is actually a pretty good lineup for what's a relatively small festival.

Posted by Anonymous | January 28, 2014 1:15 PM

1236, longer sets I guess? is it one stage? It does seem like a small # of bands to cover 3 days, but Friday doesn't start until 6PM - there's 20 bands listed up there, and the lineup poster has one 'TBA' so it's probably 4, 9, 8, longer sets for bigger bands, I guess they manage

Posted by Anonymous | January 28, 2014 1:46 PM

the only black people in boston are either on the celtics or the sox. fact.

Posted by Anonymous | January 28, 2014 11:28 PM

Who are they going to get, gary clark jr? name me another talented black alternative act?

Posted by Anonymous | January 29, 2014 9:20 PM

I prefer white people. Glad this festival will have an abundance of them..........morons.

Posted by Anonymous | February 3, 2014 3:00 AM

***PLEASE READ*** No OUTKAST?!?!!? I refuse to attend!

Posted by Hey Ya! | February 3, 2014 4:14 AM

This was one of the best weekends of my life, thank you!

Posted by Eagle | February 18, 2014 8:22 AM

Does anyone know what day Brand New is going to be playing????

Posted by Anonymous | February 27, 2014 12:48 PM

The comments are here are ridiculously funny. This line up is pretty fucking sweet! Modest Mouse, Brand New, Death Cab, and BUILT TO SPILL? I can only hope that the first three aforementioned bands play some older material, but I have to say that this is a really cool group of bands...and I'd only be more stoked if any of the white boy bands previously mentioned (Interpol, Strokes, Phoenix) played as well!

...I should disclose that I am a twenty-something year old white guy.
