Daft Punk
Darlin
Daft Punk

Daft Punk just won big at the Grammys, taking every category they were nominated for, including Record of the Year and Album of the Year. Of course, like when Arcade Fire and Bon Iver (or Bonny Bear) won Grammys, any AOTY win that wasn't Taylor Swift was likely going to inspire "Who Is Daft Punk?" questions all over social media. (I mean come on, all you have to do is leave your house to hear "Get Lucky" and you probably don't even have to do that much. Well unless you're Henry Rollins who clearly wasn't listening when James Murphy showed Daft Punk to the rock kids.)

While we're happy for Daft Punk and not wondering who they are, a new popular Reddit thread inspired us to dive back into their past a bit, before the duo strapped on their robot helmets, and were two of the three members in the rock band Darlin' (named after the Beach Boys song). You may know that the third member of that band was Laurent Brancowitz, now of Phoenix who Daft Punk played MSG with in 2010. (The story also goes that a negative Melody Maker review of Darlin' called them "a daft punky thrash," hence the name, "Daft Punk.") As with many obscurities from the past, there's plenty of Darlin' on YouTube, and you can dig into some old streams of the band below...

What if the helmet is required due to massive brain injury? Are you going to deny someone a Grammy just because he hurt his brain?

"I was the first guy playing Daft Punk to the rock kids."
James Murphy did not "show" daft punk to the rock kids, you stupid dummies.

This sort of thing is more or less exactly why the Awards exist in the first place. Expose music to a wider audience. If people are asking who is Daft Punk, or what is Arcade Fire, maybe they will do a little research, maybe pick up an album (or at least youtube it) and check it out. Maybe some new fans (and consumers) will be built.

And you're all missing the best joke of all: The actual Daft Punk guys were right there in the audience, sans helmets. (The one dude in the baseball hat and sunglasses, the other in a tux.) The fact that the actual members weren't even onstage is just simply hilarious, or so thinks Jimbone, your friend and neighbor here on BV Way...

I believed it when the kids said "Who is Paul McCartney?" after the Grammys two years ago, but I don't believe this. Theyre writing that to seem too-cool-for-the-room. Get Lucky was probably the biggest song of the year; how could these dumb fucks claim to not know them?

when it's cold out, my sack tightens.

Yawn

Posted by Anonymous | January 28, 2014 12:42 PM

11:25, most of the album was made with musicians playing instruments. You know not what you speak of.

Seriously who gives a fuck about the Grammy's? Should ship in some of those kids from Ukraine and set them loose on LA for a night and let them see what's up in the world. A bunch of spoiled rich fucks getting together so they can see which one is the biggest asshole.

@ Jimbone

You moron, them guys sitting in the audience were definitely not Daft Punk. It was Daft Punk in the suits, any real fan would know this from their body shapes alone.

You can find pictures of the real Daft Punk online just to prove you're wrong.
