Marnie Stern / Torres @ Baby's All Right - 1/28/14

Earlier this week, doNYC hosted a two-night celebration of their one year anniversary at Baby's All Right with a rowdy FIDLAR/Big Ups/Amanda X show on Monday (1/27) and an equally notable Marnie Stern / Torres / Porches show on Tuesday (1/28). Porches, who are a regular on the local live circuit, were a late addition to the bill and seemed to win over much of the crowd. Torres' grungy folk was great as always, and she took the opportunity to show off a few new songs.

Marnie closed out the night, and though her funny stage banter (usually about her vagina) and unconventional guitar playing are always highly entertaining, she was very drunk and took things a bit over the top. She went on a lengthy, belligerent rant, screaming about stretching her vagina across the stage, and made so much intentional, blaring feedback in between songs that a chunk of the crowd left early. Not everyone was turned off though, one instagram commenter said:

She is so drunk and it's amazing. And by "amazing" I mean it's sloppy, uncomfortably sexual and the feedback is killing me. Good stuff. More great bands need show public displays of drunkenness, forgetting all the words to your songs is so punk.
What did you think? Pictures from the show are in this post.

There's never a lack of Porches shows in NYC and you can catch them again this weekend, 2/1, at Cameo Gallery with Howth and Stranger Cat. They also play Brooklyn Night Bazaar later in February with Widowspeak and Jessica Pratt. All of their dates are listed with more pictures below...

Yeah being drunk in public is hilarious.

Their guitarists are the coolest and this band is the coolest to jam with this year.

bob pollard does this way better

this is why that chick has to have competitions on p4k to "win" a date with her

Posted by Anonymous | January 30, 2014 9:49 AM

is she still doing the kissing booth?

Posted by Anonymous | January 30, 2014 9:49 AM

Last time I saw her was pretty awful...she showed up by herself and played along to her album from a laptop. Yet there were all these bearded dudes in the audience pretending to have a religious experience, like "bro, she shreds so hard!". Would still stretch her vagina though.

Marnie is 37 years old. Talking about sex graphically has always been part of her shtick, but she's probably just really lonely these days.

Lady Lamb would've been the perfect opener for this show. But no...
Marnie- why you hate?

Posted by Anonymous | January 30, 2014 9:57 AM

the feedback was definitely NOT intentional.

Posted by Anonymous | January 30, 2014 10:01 AM

Does BV actually think that quoted comment was praise? It's very obvious sarcasm.

Posted by Anonymous | January 30, 2014 10:04 AM

shirtless drummer - was that really necessary?

Posted by Anonymous | January 30, 2014 10:12 AM

I was at the show. She brought me back to her apartment and made a man out of me while her dog watched on and judged us.

^ still has judeo-christian hangups about nudity

Posted by Anonymous | January 30, 2014 10:15 AM

10:14 did she make you wear a bacon flavored condom? That's probably why the dog was staring at you.

Posted by Anonymous | January 30, 2014 10:43 AM

10:43 No we raw dogged it (no pun intended.) It really only got weird when the shirtless drummer took a seat next to the bed and just stared.

37 going on 50. leather alcohol face.

Posted by Anonymous | January 30, 2014 11:59 AM

i think that comment was tongue in cheek, BV... but good reporting

Posted by Anonymous | January 30, 2014 12:08 PM

11:58 It endlessly cracks me up how many girls in their late twenties/early thirties think they will be immune to that.

Posted by Anonymous | January 30, 2014 12:17 PM

So much hate on here. Yes, the show was bad, especially after Porches killed it earlier. Of it wasn't for the stupid feedback, which was not intentional, it would have been a much more entertaining show, the feedback was just kind of defeating.

Posted by Anonymous | January 30, 2014 12:18 PM

Porches look so goddamn hip I wanna ralf. That drummer is named Mason Macias and he is bad ass. Plus his chest hair grows into his beard and vice versa so fuck all the haters.

Posted by Anonymous | January 30, 2014 12:54 PM

Make sure you carefully read the entire recap of the show and not just every other line. Otherwise, the photos will be a major letdown.

11:12- Never! Not until Lady Lamb is recognized for the force that holds and binds all of Brooklyn indie culture together.

Posted by Anonymous | January 30, 2014 1:01 PM

Maybe Fred Armisen dumped her

Posted by Anonymous | January 30, 2014 3:04 PM

Dude mason is a sic fucking drummer man!

Posted by Anonymous | January 30, 2014 3:49 PM

There is no way "Lady Lamb" is the "the force that holds and binds all of Brooklyn indie culture together." She only played two venues in Brooklyn in all of 2013, neither of which were all ages "DIY" venues which are for better or for worse considered the foundation of the borough's music scene. There are bands that play more shows in Brooklyn each week then she did all year.

The is only one force that holds and binds all of Brooklyn indie culture together. It's known as L1n5anity.

This woman - who somehow got a job playing with the 8G Band on Late Night with Seth Meyers - has to be one of the least talented "guitarists" I've ever seen who has the balls to play in public. Her voice is a little like fingernails on a chalkboard. It never ceases to amaze me how little the general American Public knows about music and the low level of talent that passes for acceptable, let alone good. This woman isn't even mediocre. She has energy and balls, period. There are MANY beginners who STONE her on guitar. She must be VERY good in bed. Ufb.

^ half the local bands here are exactly that and it isn't because the public "don't know" and it is because they "don't care".
