Merge 25

Merge Records is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year and they are planning a year-long celebration the culmination of which will be the Merge Festival which will happen July 23-26 in the label's hometown of Carrboro, NC. Line-up, tickets and other interesting details like those are still TBA, but you can watch a couple teaser videos below. (This will probably be one festival Outkast won't be at, but you never know!) They last celebrated back in 2009 with XX Merge.

Additionally, you can subscribe to Merge's "Or Thousands of Prizes" singles club where you get a new 7" on colored vinyl every month featuring 25 of the label's artists, including Superchunk, Mikal Cronin, Mount Moriah, The Mountain Goats, The Clientele, Destroyer, King Khan & the Shrines, Lambchop, and more. Subscribers will also get a collector's box, t-shirt, a surprise bonus 12" single, new E-book version of The Merge Records Companion and first crack at Merge Fest tickets. You can still buy in.

There's also a Merge 25k road race on March 22 which runs from Chapel Hill to Durham and more fun stuff to be announced. They gave their website a nice redesign too. Looking good at a quarter century, Merge!

Be great if they could get Caribou to play this.

Be great if they could get Pixies to play Caribou at this.

That boy with the striped sweater and emo2k13 haircut is super cute, we should start a band together

High water mark for label self-celebrations is still Matador 21, I think. That was a blast. Though there's a lot of overlap between the labels. Superchunk in particular was great at that. But Vegas was a little more fun than Carrboro, NC methinks,

Carrboro trumps Vegas.

would be great if the clientele reunited for this without that wack-ass woman that ruined the band.

Why does the festival run Wed-Sat instead of Thu-Sun? Weird.

Although they were on Alias, a Small 23 reunion for this would be awesome.

There was a woman in the Clientele? I always thought the singer/guitarist was a guy but never 100% sure.

514...they added a woman on keyboards and violin after their 3rd album. and she sucks. i think maybe the lead singer was dating her but im not sure.

they just never surpassed their early material.

The Clean seems like the likely Flying Nun band they'd get, but I'd love to see The 3D's.

Dogshit label for dogshit people. Mac is super talented though! And Laura used to jump and down, crazy!

The fact that Merge existed long enough to encourage talentless fucks like Sacred Bones and Mexican Summer is reason enough to scorn them.

People always leave Merge off the best indie labels in the US lists, but they are and they have been for a while. I'm proud to see them get this far. That being said, if I don't get to water slide with Jenn Wasner, I'm out.

This could be completely epic and legendary:

The Magnetic Fields perform 69 Love Songs
Everything But The Girl
The Clean
Sugar
Volcano Suns
Versus
East River Pipe

But let's be honest, it's gonna be:

Arcade Fire
Shout Out Louds
Conor Oberst
She & Him
Eleanor Friedberger
Mikal Cronin

"Lifestyle Indie" defined.

Oakley Hall reunion? Please??

This is the most promising festival lineup yet in what is so far a terribly weak year. And I agree Chapel Hill area > Vegas.

What was fun about Vegas was that all the bands stayed in the same hotel with the fans, so it was all self-contained and fun. Checked in behind Pavement, took the elevator with Superchunk, sat next to New Pornos at breakfast, etc. It was like a cruise without the Legionnaires' disease.
