Parquet Courts @ Acheron 1/14/2014
Parquet Courts

Parquet Courts warmed up for some upcoming gigs on the West Coast, New Zealand and Australia with a hometown show at Bushwick's Acheron last night (1/17), a small place for the band these days -- they just made their network TV debut on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon earlier in the week. A couple notable things about the show: it was the first show with fill-in drummer Greg Rutheford, who'll be sitting in on the imminent tour, as Max Savage (brother of singer Andrew) has school requirements. Rutherford played in one of Andrew's other bands, Wiccans (as well as Bad Sports), so the transition was pretty seamless.

Second, the set featured a load of new songs as the band are currently recording the full-length follow-up to Light Up Gold, which has had some pretty good legs. The album came out in August 2012 and "Stoned and Starving" was still getting killed on Sirius radio's XMU channel when I listened over Christmas (driving my parents car around in rural WV). I couldn't get a good fix on the new stuff but it did seem like many of them were more instrumentally driven than the short, sharp ones on Light Up Gold or the new EP. About halfway through their set they kicked in with the Light Up Gold songs and the place began to bounce to the one-two punch of "Master of My Craft" and "Borrowed Time." As someone who has listened to that album a whole lot, I still don't tire of those songs live. Maybe they do, though.

I got there late which meant a) I was squashed in the back (place was seriously packed), and b) I missed both openers Household (who I like a lot) and Philadelphia trio Amanda X (whose songs on Bandcamp sound pretty good). Luckily, our photographer showed up on time and got pictures of the whole night.

If you want to date wealthy men and beautiful women with high net worth, ideally you must know where these people hang out. Don’t know where to start? ++++ WealthyPeople.Org ++++ The easiest way to go would be meeting them online.

So depressing on many levels. You should all be ashamed of yourselves.

Posted by Anonymous | January 15, 2014 11:52 PM

EDM go the fuck HOME.

Posted by Anonymous | January 16, 2014 12:22 AM

so many white people!

Posted by Anonymous | January 16, 2014 1:17 AM

most non-whites aren't really into guitars, in case no one's noticed. Apparently "DJing" other people's tunes is more up their alley.

They heyday of Delta/Chicago Blues is long over, people. Any any other culture that isn't black, is basically trying to act black.

Poseur world.

crowd sucked. detracted from the show entirely. maybe because of a small venue. douchebag of the night goes to that tall pile of shit with the artic monkeys hat faking the photo thing with multi cell ph cameras. wonder if his mommy pinned his mittens to that outfit. runner up to duche bag of the night goes to that christian bale on crack dick in black hoody. yeah we know you know all the lyrics. yeah we know you haven't been laid in like forever. go back to rehab drug face.

2:02--I guess I too would move on from an instrument or genre of music if white people stole it from me, turned it into a commodity, and kept all the money for themselves.

Posted by Anonymous | January 16, 2014 10:51 AM

Christion Bale was awesome and friendly. If you want a tame lame crowd go to a Celine Dion show and STFU. Yeah tons of white people so what. Do people bitch when there's not enough white people in a mostly black crowd? Should there be some type of quota of black and white at rock shows? snore

Amanda X was so fucking terrible. I was in disbelief that people clapped/cheered after they finished songs, must have been family & friends. Trying to sound like Hole and failing so so bad. Tone deaf ugly poser chicks.

Posted by Anonymous | January 16, 2014 12:00 PM

it's good to see white people can still go somewhere to be awkward together.

Posted by Anonymous | January 16, 2014 12:20 PM

11:19 is the one in Parquet Courts with the long hair. the really, really, really white one, I mean. the translucent one.

Hickster from West Virginia writing a review about other hicksters from Texass. When will you people just leave and go back to your KKK meetings?

Posted by xHotCarlx | January 16, 2014 1:43 PM

don't get the appeal of this band. saw them open for The Men. middling Adult Contemporary "Rock" at best. so funny how it's cool to like them. can't believe a band like Destruction Unit is doing shows with them. this band is completely useless.

11:19 good one..did u cop the oxy for black hoody drug face or did he steal it from your's mommy's med cabinet?

Posted by Anonymous | January 16, 2014 2:13 PM

Don't know whether to give them credit for not playing stoned and starving at this show or hate about it.
