"I woke up this morning and thought the whole MSG run was a dream." - @SoYeahBrah

Phish @ MSG (via @phishfromtheroad)
Phish

2013 marked 30 years since Phish first formed on the campus of the University of Vermont in Burlington, VT. Keyboardist Page McConnell mentioned the occasion on New Year's Eve 2012-2013 and then there was little talk of the anniversary throughout the year...until last night. The quartet finally celebrated their anniversary last night at Madison Square Garden as part of their New Year's Run finale at the NYC venue. The members of the band loaded on top of a truck made to simulate a stage of a club from early in their career for Tuesday night's second set. Phish also tipped their hats to the band's first gig by using hockey sticks as microphone stands and an extremely basic gear setup. Furthermore, in between the end of the third set and the encore, a montage showing scenes from the past 30 years was displayed on The Garden's scoreboard. With the exception of the "Auld Lang Syne" that signaled the start of 2014, Phish didn't play any covers throughout the four night run. [JamBase]
Phish played their four-night run at Madison Square Garden starting on December 28 and leading up to New Year's Eve. Like the review quoted above mentions, they only played one cover over the course of the four nights, which were in celebration of their 30th anniversary as a band. You can check out the setlists from all four nights below.

In less happy news, like at Phish's recent Halloween run in Atlantic City, more than a few people were arrested outside of MSG on the nights of the shows. NY Times reports:

At least 228 people were arrested or received summonses at shows on the first three nights of a four-night stand that was to end Tuesday with a New Year's Eve performance and undoubtedly more arrests.

...

While ticket scalping and public urination accounted for some of the arrests over the first two days, most were linked to narcotics possession and sales. Undercover officers have confiscated marijuana, hash, psychedelic mushrooms, LSD, MDMA or ecstasy, amphetamine and prescription drugs like Oxycodone, OxyContin and Xanax, among other drugs, the authorities said.

Most of the offenders were charged with misdemeanors or given summonses, according to the Manhattan district attorney's office. So far, 10 people have been charged with felonies, most of them for attempting to sell drugs to undercover police officers.

The article also points out that Phish fans were handing out a pamphlet which included, among other things, a plea for Phish to play New Year's Eve in a different venue:
"How about visiting some other great Northeast venues?" the pamphlet said. "You know the ones that have affordable accommodations, easy transportation, and where Our Community is thoroughly welcomed by the Local Community?"

Shittiest music. Shittiest fans

These fucktards paid between $150-$1000 to see this abortion of a band!

HA what a joke.

You could have went to Bonnaroo for that much.

Posted by Anonymous | January 2, 2014 9:32 AM

Cool show dudes.

A band whose fans only go to the shows to do drugs.

NICE

Posted by Anonymous | January 2, 2014 9:38 AM

i think someone sold me some fake molly outside msg on monday night

Posted by Anonymous | January 2, 2014 9:38 AM

Phish dicks

"These fucktards paid between $150-$1000 to see this abortion of a band!
HA what a joke."

replace "see this abortion with a band" with "get arrested or a summons" and it reads better

Posted by Anonymous | January 2, 2014 9:39 AM

@9:39

Pitchfork Editor?

Posted by Anonymous | January 2, 2014 9:43 AM

face value tickets were readily available all throughout the run... nobody was paying $150 to get in

yes the fans can be annoying

still, 30 years speaks for itself

who cares about drugs? rock and roll bands used to celebrate drug use. you could say that Phish has more in common with rock and roll's past than its "Up With People" future...

I went to the Sunday show after copping a free ticket from a friend who'd upgraded seats. I hadn't seen them since the early 90s. Band was really tight, had some great jams, I left impressed.

Name one other band that can do 9 sets in 4 days and not repeat one tune, and still leave some classics OUT.

Whatever you think of their music, that is impressive.

Posted by Anonymous | January 2, 2014 9:47 AM

only the truly stupid were getting arrested for drugs. they didn't even pat down people entering the venue (wands only)

unless you were straight up dealing drugs in front of the venue you were fine

Posted by Anonymous | January 2, 2014 9:50 AM

Best show of the year!!!

Posted by Phish Phan | January 2, 2014 9:50 AM

"Phish is lame," said the brooklyn dweeb who takes himself way too seriously and dresses like a french asshole.

Posted by Anonymous | January 2, 2014 9:55 AM

Totally agree they should play somewhere else on New Year's Eve. Somewhere more relaxed. Colorado, Oregon, Washington. Wouldn't be nearly as many arrests.

Posted by Anonymous | January 2, 2014 10:00 AM

@9:55

Please stay in Burlington, VT forever and never venture out.

You stayed with your parents in North Jersey so you could see this terrible 'run'. You can't say anything about Brooklyn Peeps

Posted by Anonymous | January 2, 2014 10:02 AM

Yes please! lets get this band out of NYC! Praise Satan there were so many arrests! KEEP PHISH OUT OF NYC!!!

Posted by Anonymous | January 2, 2014 10:05 AM

Are the cops still doing that "stop and frisk" thing in New York?

Posted by Anonymous | January 2, 2014 10:07 AM

Phish shows are always epic. Grow up haters, not everyone likes that tUnE-yArD or HAME crap. This is real music by real artists, and the fans know who they are. Maybe there is an object lesson in there for you?

Posted by Anonymous | January 2, 2014 10:09 AM

too bad for the phans. Phish signed a contract with MSG in which the band will be playing NYE runs there for the next half decade. Considering most of the band lives here in the city, phat chance of seeing any change there.

Posted by Anonymous | January 2, 2014 10:10 AM

10:07 how's the snow in Sioux City today? Pretty cold too?

Posted by Anonymous | January 2, 2014 10:10 AM

The music is objectively bad and the people associated with it are some of the more tasteless, insipid people you could ever come across.

Posted by Anonymous | January 2, 2014 10:15 AM

lol @ "objectively bad"

Posted by Anonymous | January 2, 2014 10:17 AM

10:15 = big Sky Ferreira fan (now there is *real* music derp derp)

Posted by Anonymous | January 2, 2014 10:17 AM

Yes, please leave New York and never come back.

Posted by Anonymous | January 2, 2014 10:22 AM

PHISH Fans are really nice people and all but the music is just so so so bad.

Posted by Anonymous | January 2, 2014 10:22 AM

@10:00 everything other than weed that people got arrested for is still illegal in WA, CO, and OR.

Posted by Anonymous | January 2, 2014 10:22 AM

best shows of the year.....again. Sorry you tr0lls dont get it and i feel for you.

Posted by Anonymous | January 2, 2014 10:23 AM

Did anyone get any upper decks?

Posted by Anonymous | January 2, 2014 10:27 AM

How many of your dumb indie bands are playing radically different setlists each night? How many actually push the songs to new places each night? Oh, none?

Posted by Anonymous | January 2, 2014 10:31 AM

@10:31

OUCH.

Sorry so many dumb indie bands haven't been around for 30 years.

Anyway Phish plays a bunch of covers every night anyway. not that cool!

Posted by Anonymous | January 2, 2014 10:36 AM

haha buncha scenesters hating on Phish!
lets see your favorite band do 2 nights without a repeat much less 4!
the only band left that might could pull it off would be Wilco

Posted by Anonymous | January 2, 2014 10:37 AM

You used Wilco as a comparison band. WOW

What a joke

Posted by Anonymous | January 2, 2014 10:40 AM

Can't we all just get along?

Posted by Rodney King | January 2, 2014 10:47 AM

Wilco is a great band but a very different band then Phish.

Posted by Anonymous | January 2, 2014 10:51 AM

How many of the above commenters talking shit about Phish paid face to see Atoms For Peace? All of them, or just 95%?

Posted by Anonymous | January 2, 2014 11:01 AM

Q: What did the Phish fans say after the drugs wore off?

A: What is that AWFUL music?

Posted by Anonymous | January 2, 2014 11:12 AM

Yeah, I wouldn't have used Wilco. Wilco is beyond done, but Phish is still semi-vibrant

Posted by Anonymous | January 2, 2014 11:14 AM

Q: What does the average BV reader hear first thing in the morning?

A: C'mon Timmy, you're gonna miss the bus if you don't get up now!

Posted by Anonymous | January 2, 2014 11:16 AM

the stupid in this thread is strong

Posted by Anonymous | January 2, 2014 11:20 AM

I'm curious how many people ripping on Phish have ever listened to them.

Cool joke, 11:12! Haven't heard it done by anyone ever before.

Posted by Anonymous | January 2, 2014 11:21 AM

You all do realize that these guys are all monster players, right? I mean, there is a whole school of guitar playing around Trey, for instance.

Posted by Anonymous | January 2, 2014 11:37 AM

Happy New Year, haters! Fuck off!

Posted by Anonymous | January 2, 2014 11:53 AM

Bands can be technically proficient and still suck. A lot of the metal bands have VERY competent musicians. It doesn't mean that they can't put out crap that only losers listen to.

Although here is the weird thing...just as an example...all the cool kids from the 70s (the ones who are still alive, anyway) still have an aversion to Zeppelin because they grew up with it being cheesy main stream arena rock, and they'll never get past that. I guess we'll see what people think of Phish in 2050. Pointless to argue about it now.

Posted by Anonymous | January 2, 2014 11:59 AM

KYS 11:12

Posted by Anonymous | January 2, 2014 12:04 PM

Don't you just love it when uninformed people with superinflated opinions of themselves claim to speak for an entire generation? They always reminded me of the Little Rascals episode where the monkey thought he was a golf caddy. Only in that case the monkey was actually funny.

Posted by Anonymous | January 2, 2014 12:22 PM

11:59 I find it amazing that none of those temporary assignments have appreciated what an informed, intelligent person you are. It's a shame there is not much of a market for Feminist Theory degrees these days.

Posted by Anonymous | January 2, 2014 12:32 PM

While I respect the drug use, I think I'd rather go to the Garden to listen to Andrea Bargnani yodel than listen to this crap.

Posted by Anonymous | January 2, 2014 12:34 PM

Worse than Billy Joel?

Is that possible?

Not sure.

Lame ass baby boomers or their spoiled drug addict kids?

Posted by Anonymous | January 2, 2014 12:39 PM

Why you talking shit about Wilco

Posted by Anonymous | January 2, 2014 12:46 PM

Is there anything more pathetic than people who travel to see phish?

Posted by Anonymous | January 2, 2014 12:51 PM

^ uhm, yeah 12:51 ... that would be YOU lol

Posted by Anonymous | January 2, 2014 12:52 PM

Just relax, 12:46. Wilco blows, and it's a nearly universally accepted fact at this point.

Posted by Anonymous | January 2, 2014 12:53 PM

If anyone should travel for a band it would be Phish. They at least vary their setlists!

Posted by Anonymous | January 2, 2014 12:54 PM

12:51 right? These dorks don't even know how to vacation properly. smh

Posted by Anonymous | January 2, 2014 1:00 PM

Phish are the iPods of the jam band set

"they vary their setlists from track to track"

Posted by Anonymous | January 2, 2014 1:02 PM

12:54 slow your roll. It's not like we're talking like an iPods level of diversity here.

Posted by Anonymous | January 2, 2014 1:02 PM

I hate to admit it but I chuckled at 1:02

Posted by Anonymous | January 2, 2014 1:10 PM

Phish
Diversity from setlist to setlist

Posted by Anonymous | January 2, 2014 1:10 PM

iPhish?

iRx?

What about that guy busted with 424 capsules of MDMA, 71 strips of LSD and 14 bags of mushrooms in his pants? Where do you put all of that?

Posted by Anonymous | January 2, 2014 1:14 PM

They should have played *after* New Year's, all crimes are permitted in de Blasio's New York.

Posted by Anonymous | January 2, 2014 1:16 PM

Macaulay Culkin told me once that back in the day Mike Gordon use to finger bang him. True story.

Posted by Anonymous | January 2, 2014 1:19 PM

Nobody at a Phish concert has even heard of Speedy Ortiz, except for the wook bass player of Speedy Ortiz.

Posted by Anonymous | January 2, 2014 1:29 PM

Guaranteed contracts for Billy Joel and Phish? Oh myyyyyyyyyyyy. It's a good year for white people.

Posted by Anonymous | January 2, 2014 1:33 PM

I wonder what Bill Graham would think of these clowns?

Posted by Anonymous | January 2, 2014 1:34 PM

I assure you 1:34 Bill Graham would have been all over these guys like white on rice. There is a lot of money to be made on multi-night sell_out shows at premiere venues.

Posted by Anonymous | January 2, 2014 2:03 PM

Trey once finger banged Corey Haim

Posted by Anonymous | January 2, 2014 2:05 PM

Phish is a form of music most of these haters just don't understand. Half the fun is knowing the history, or hearing a song you have heard quite a bit get taken in a new direction, not to mention one of the wackiest scenes music has ever cultivated. I'll admit my first show was fun, but it only got more fun afterwards; i grew up on classic rock and jams, but i understand the difficulty in liking phish. To be honest you have to know their repertoire. And don't think everyone is on drugs. The band cleaned up and a lot if vets moved forward with their lives during the hiatus. Had a blast just imbibing.

Posted by Anonymous | January 2, 2014 2:12 PM

^ I picture 2:12 as 5 ft 5 in 40-something, public school teacher in some backwater shithole in Ulster County with 3-days growth and cigarette ruined voice. Oh, forgot the Che t-shirt (red, of course).

Posted by Anonymous | January 2, 2014 2:21 PM

^Thank you for that. Absolute tool posting at 2:12 but I bet he sat back after writing that thinking how erudite he is.

"not to mention one of the wackiest scenes music has ever cultivated"

You just have to laugh at the stupidity of that statement as well as the lack of musical history behind it.

All of my statements make sense. All i said is phish is an acquired taste, and you simply haven't put in the time to acquire it. I even acknowledged your position because it's hard to grasp it all. Next you went onto personal attacks against someone you've never met personally. I feel bad for you.

stupid scenesters making comments about how old hippies and musicians not liking Phish is even dumber than the shit you guys call "real" music.
the rule is when folks say Phish sucks they are just ignorant about the band which is no big deal. just funny really.
Sad because they may like it if they gave it a chance.

Posted by Anonymous | January 2, 2014 2:50 PM

No licensed or budding lawyer would confess ("anonymously" or otherwise) to imbibing anything that could be inferred to be illegal, at any time. Unassailable fact.

Posted by Anonymous | January 2, 2014 2:54 PM

@254
Imbibe
To drink (alcohol).

Forget the helping friendly book, someone get this kid a dictionary.

Posted by Anonymous | January 2, 2014 3:04 PM

^ Universally accepted common use of the word "imbibe" within contemporary American popular culture includes illicit substances including but not limited to pot, MDMA, acid, etc.

Not to mention the use of the phrase "could be inferred", since your fraud preparation did not include reading comprehension

When you get your bar interview good luck explaining your intent from such incriminating words. Don't think that we don't read these blogs.

No they don't and no they aren't. People who like Phish just have no taste.

all these hater fucks just aren't getting the message.

cause when phish started the band, they had a message. they started the band to get the message across.

and these people just aren't getting the message. and its pissing the band off. so go to the show to get the fucking message.

and if you can't get it after its been shouted at you, its obvious you need to read the fucking book. plain and simple, man.

its just plain and simple that all these people haven't read the book.

SO READ THE FUCKING BOOK!

I went to Plattsburgh state which is next door to Burlington. Phish fans are douchebags. They were everywhere at my school. If you weren't into Phish, they treated you like you were an asshole and that anything you listened to that wasn't Phish, sucked.

I would say I'm a casual fan of their music. I think Billy Breathes is a really good album but their other stuff is too jokey and jammy.

It is drug taking music. Pure and simple.

Posted by Anonymous | January 2, 2014 5:56 PM

Phish fans are actually the perfect storm of annoying assholery. They have the elitism and provinciality of hipsters, the loopy counter-logic of hippies, the pack mentality of bros, the drug appetite of EDM idiots and the unfunny absurdism of jugalos. Just a Greek tragedy of human drama.

Posted by Anonymous | January 2, 2014 7:08 PM

I have 3 words for all the Phish heads......

Allman Brothers Band

Posted by Anonymous | January 2, 2014 7:33 PM

The comments on this are populated by pretentious self-righteous hipster fags (fags in the non-homophobic sense) !!!!

Posted by T Smithe | January 2, 2014 7:58 PM

"the loopy counter-logic of hippies"

haha nothing worse than that!!! you must think yourself one smart bean! fucking dink!

you know with all of this logical talk about how Phish sucks ive started to realize they actually do suck and that feeling I get when I see them play their music is a sign that I'm not as cool or smart as I thought I was. I don't even get high on anything anymore really so im must just be flat out dumber than shit

unless they like The Eagles or Motley Crue Im pretty much laying off other peoples musical tastes.

I like almost everything and Phish is a great great band.

Posted by Anonymous | January 2, 2014 8:05 PM

At 10:36 - no covers were played during this run of shows, and your dumb indie bands won't be around 30 years from now. Also, even if they were, they wouldn't be pushing their songs to new placed each and every night. If you such a fan of indie bands maybe you shouldn't be so hard on a band like Phish that developed their following all on their own. They have no radio hits and played in relative obscurity for years before the fan base started to expand. Doesn't get much more independent than a band that put its whole emphasis on doing things the opposite of how most bands do and focussed completely on their live shows for the first decade of their career instead of worrying about putting out albums. Considering that Phish started out in the 80s purely by word of mouth, that sounds pretty independent. AGain, your stupid indie bands won't last the nexst five years and will still be playing poorly and playing their songs the same way and the same lenghth everynight well into the future of their short existence.

Posted by T Smithe | January 2, 2014 8:06 PM

"the pack mentality of bros"

what does this mean exactly? im confused

Posted by Anonymous | January 2, 2014 8:07 PM

@10:22AM yeah but those states are more granola and laid back and won't be targeting the fans outside the shows (even if the other drugs they have are illegal).

Posted by Anonymous | January 2, 2014 8:07 PM

Phish is just a vehicle for beta male prep schools brahs to conjugate over until they eventually marry the ball busting shrew suitable to their station in life.

Posted by Anonymous | January 2, 2014 8:37 PM

Embarrassing nursery rhymes for adulets- there is a lot better music to take drugs to.

Posted by Anonymous | January 2, 2014 8:49 PM

Posted by Anonymous | January 2, 2014 8:55 PM

I can't wait till Brooklyn turns into a shithole again and all these fuckin douchebag hipsters move back to Ohio or whatever dumbfuck small town in the Midwest they're from.

Say what you want about the fans, the drugs, whatever. If you know shit about music you would know that they are a seriously talented group of people, widely respected by talented musicians of every genre with a massive collection of original music.

7:08, you're not foolin anybody, you hipster douchebag. Maybe you should read a Greek tragedy before you reference them for any reason, clearly you haven't cause your post makes no sense.

Yeah, I can't blame you.

But if you change your mind, dawg.....Phish!

People hating on Phish have never seen them. They are just a good time. Lighten up, haters. It's a nice life in the sunshine.

Seriously, I have a question to anyone that went to any of the shows: Where the brothers at kid? Does it bother you too?

Posted by Anonymous | January 2, 2014 9:48 PM

Hey all you really mature people who are going out of their way to knock phish, please then, stay away from the shows and make sure you do not buy any tickets so phans like me have a better chance of getting a ticket to one of their sold out show. Oh yeah quick fact. The 1999-2000 NYE Phish played the biggest concert in the United States(80,000 people). Pretty damn good for a band that sucks as much as you frat boys say so.

Me and my broskis just got home from lax practice, and we were looking for some skanks to hose when my bro Tad said "I'm a shit for brains, Phish is totally playing tonight". So that sounded chill so we took the PATH in from Ridgewood and walked right up, but damn those scalpers wanted face for that shit. We were about to head to Mustang Sally's to imbibe of various party favors when bro #2 Chase got this idea to get these old dudes who tried to sell us MDMA busted, and then we could take their tickets. And it totally worked! So we gave the cops a high 5 for letting us take their tickets before they brought them to the hoozgow, and we were in, on the floor. And wouldn't you know, we all found skanks for after the show too. MLIB.

^you blew it brah! You should have checked out the Queens at Barclays a few weeks ago. QOTSA + BW3 = THE SHIZ!!!

Posted by Anonymous | January 2, 2014 11:09 PM

@12:39 made me laugh. I love Phish and would have been at those shows if I wasn't broke and living in Miami. Also enjoy Billy Joel...

But while it may be unfair to judge any individual based on a generalization, those are pretty damn accurate generalizations for the mass of people as a whole.

^ Thanks bro, but who said we didn't hit that scene? Sweeter skanks and better sandwiches but all my broskis and I are all about the Phish scene. Next year when we're all playing college lax we already made a pact to hit up the winter tour together. Got to bro.

"I really wish I could see these loudmouth Phish heads in the flesh. Take away the cloak of internet anonymity and bet they run away like little bitches, all the way back to Vassar and Quinnipiac and Stevens. Don't even deny it you entitled transplants."

BWAHAAAA An anti PHISH interweb tough guy!! How sad is this fucker

Posted by Anonymous | January 2, 2014 11:29 PM

Phish's music sounds like it was made for children in kindergarden.

Posted by Anonymous | January 3, 2014 12:14 AM

I look down on the Phish fans, because my choice of Ozric Tentacles makes me obviously superior.

wow, phish wins most comments of the year...again. The love/hate for this band is exponentially expanding my the second

Posted by Anonymous | January 3, 2014 7:41 AM

Not as sad as you 11:29 but try to have a nice day just the same, Sport.

Posted by Anonymous | January 3, 2014 10:15 AM

ummm i like phish but I really cringe when people call themselves "phans"... anyway as an old head who went to 12/30 I will say the fans aren't annoying AT the show as they probably are on twitter or smoking with them afterwards. it's all good though.

while their lyrics are generally pretty sophmoric, they are terrific musicians, especially the piano/synth player.

I bet if you saw them in Mercury Lounge or something playing a secret show, under a different name, with no "phans" in attendance you might actually be able to allow yourself to like them.

and... QOTSA just suck. horrible band.

Billy Joel forever
