Pixies

Lenchantin, who has played with A Perfect Circle and Billy Corgan's Zwan, occasionally looked like she couldn't believe her luck. She grinned as she swung the neck of her bass on the sardonic "U-Mass," added sweet, high vocals to "Bone Machine" and threw down an overpowering bassline that rattled the entire building on "Bagboy," a song the Pixies released last summer shortly after Deal left.

Black Francis was in fine, energetic form, too. He switched between acoustic and electric guitar throughout the show, singing in an unnervingly pleasant tone over chugging guitar on "Cactus," shrieking on new song "Blue Eyed Hexe," and locking into unison vocals with Lenchantin on "Subbacultcha." - [Rolling Stone]

Pixies got a jumpstart on their 2014 tour near their old Boston stomping grounds with a show at Northampton's Calvin Theatre, marking the first show with new bassist Paz Lenchantin. As Rolling Stone points out above, she fits in well, though as drummer David Lovering points out, nobody can truly replace Kim Deal. Meanwhile, another famed indie rock bassist (and occasional actor) who calls Northampton home was there watching (as was another local indie rocker, J Mascis). You can check out the setlist below and pictures from the show are also in this post.

The Northhampton show was opened by another Boston indie legend, onetime Miracle Legion (and Polaris) frontman Mark Mulcahy who put out a very good solo record last year. Mark plays NYC in March as part of Lincoln Center's American Songwriters Series.

Pixies will hit the NYC-area next later this week, playing  Sunday (1/19) at Capitol Theatre tickets) and  Tuesday, 1/21 at NJPAC with FIDLAR (tickets). More pics from last night's show in Northampton and the setlist below...

"Pixies got a jumpstart on their 2014 tour near their old Boston stomping grounds ..."

You almost couldn't get further away from Boston and still be in MA. Might be better to say "their old Amherst stomping grounds"?

I was okay back in 2006 with their little reunion but now it just screams money grab. Go away now. Please.

Can't wait until Dave does some magic and makes all you negabots disappear!

Posted by Anonymous | January 14, 2014 3:13 PM

This is truly embarrassing. No matter what songs they play, how could they go on to release two horrific EP's and tour without Kim Deal? Pixies = Smashing Pumpkins

Posted by Anonymous | January 14, 2014 3:19 PM

"I was okay back in 2006 with their little reunion but now it just screams money grab. Go away now. Please."

----In 2006 Frank called it a way to "move product" so it was a money grab then too.

Posted by Anonymous | January 14, 2014 3:24 PM

Damn, Ed is Dead, love that one and haven't gotten to see them play it, well I'm sure this tour will continue indefinitely and I'll be able to catch it

Does Mulcahy play Polaris stuff? (that is the 'hey sandy' polaris, right?)

Posted by Anonymous | January 14, 2014 3:27 PM

Lots of anticipation, and one very sourpuss butthurt non-fanboy

It's OK Tad maybe Hunx & His Punx will come back before the spring LOL

Posted by Anonymous | January 14, 2014 3:30 PM

Visible nipples through sweater? The Pixies don't do that.

Posted by Anonymous | January 14, 2014 3:35 PM

Paz :::Swoon:::

Posted by Anonymous | January 14, 2014 3:37 PM

3:27, he does tend to throw some Polaris songs in there. When he played Mercury he played a couple but no 'Hey Sandy.'

Posted by Anonymous | January 14, 2014 3:41 PM

but did he win the Polaris Prize or the Mercury Prize? Hmm?

Posted by Anonymous | January 14, 2014 3:56 PM

paz used to fuck billy corgan, and or matt sweeney and dave pajo. probably jimmy chamberlin also

Posted by Anonymous | January 14, 2014 4:37 PM

Marc in heading, but Mark in body. Note to BV: correct. You figure out which one is correct. I know but not telling. Anyway, with less than 6 degrees, Mulcahy should REJOIN forces with Mr. Ray with the 2 guys who played bass and drums w/ Black Francis as the Catholics, then you got yourselves a Miracle Legion reunion.

Posted by anonymous | January 14, 2014 4:40 PM

327, that's cool, I remember enjoying 'she is staggering' and 'waiting for october' (I think) also

Posted by Anonymous | January 14, 2014 4:56 PM

Mulcahy's newest album should have been near the top of all the "album of the year" lists for 2013

Posted by Anonymous | January 14, 2014 4:57 PM

i used to fuck an ex-stripper who had also fucked billy corgan so if 4:37 is correct, i almost fucked billy and paz. not bad.

Posted by Anonymous | January 14, 2014 6:15 PM

Yeah town next to UMass might be better...
I went to Calvin show and it was waaaaay better than 2006. Tight But menacing too. They banged out the first 15 songs in under 45 minutes. Some songs were two minute blitzes that instantly jumped into a new tune. Santiago was restrained but still snarling when unleashed. Check song list- new stuff defies logic and is actually quite good. New bassist passes the test.

Posted by Valleyrock | January 14, 2014 7:41 PM

there something else in the way.

I predicted that the first appropriate comment for Paz would be comment #11. It seems you dorks are hung-up on the Pixies being a lost cause that it actually turned out to be #18.

Next time... sooner.

Posted by Anonymous | January 15, 2014 10:44 AM

I love the Pixies, but they need to let it die so we can all remember them fondly. The new material is really, really, really bad. It's so bad that it's almost impossible to believe it's the Pixies. The Frank Black solo material has been good, so I have no idea where this new material even came from. It sounds like bad heavy metal.

Posted by Anonymous | January 15, 2014 10:57 AM

Seriously, you know who needs to let it die? Radiohead needs to let it die. Radiohead are so done, yet I don't hear you poofy putzes making static over their massive carbon footprint.

Posted by Anonymous | January 15, 2014 11:13 AM

just sayin, with that a$$ obsession of yours.

Posted by Anonymous | January 15, 2014 1:06 PM

10:57 - YOU think the new pixies material is "really, really, really bad." you know that's YOUR opinion (and pitchfork's) and you DO know the saying about opinions, right?

if not, you should, A-HOLE.

and the point's been made about pitchfork (pretentious hipsters who will flame out and leave people saying, "pitchfork? you mean that thing farmer's use?" soon enough).

again, what have YOU done to contribute to the arts (or even culture)? my guess is you're an albatross around the neck of society.

the 2 new pixies eps are better than ANYTHING you'll EVER do in ANY form whatsoever.

Posted by Anonymous | January 15, 2014 1:31 PM

1113 Radiohead are still great especially live.

Posted by Anonymous | January 15, 2014 1:33 PM

@1:33 their king of limbs tour was terrible. In rainbows tour was good though.

Posted by Anonymous | January 15, 2014 1:59 PM

Radiohead is done, fork in them done. Trust me kids, I've seen this parade before. They will continue to devolve into a parody of themselves WORSE than the Pixies due to the fact that their collective ego is bigger than our solar system and they just can't see that the magic is gone, gone, gone

Posted by Anonymous | January 15, 2014 2:07 PM

11:13/2:07 - i'd be willing to bet you the farm, if i could handle being in the presence of such an ignoramus, that radiohead will not only continue, but will continue to define popular music.

they will be in the pantheon of such musicians as the beatles and beethoven. they are nearly there now.

my guess is the radiohead-bashers are people who don't have the capacity or intelligence to recognize and enjoy complex, magical music made by adults.

radiohead>anything any hipster ever listened to or will listen to

Posted by Anonymous | January 15, 2014 2:18 PM

Radiohead continue to try new genre after each album I give them a lot of credit. What two Radiohead albums sound even slightly similar? They continue to evolve that is for sure!

Posted by Anonymous | January 15, 2014 2:23 PM

@2:18 you are the epitome of a delusional radiohead fan, ignorant and extremely irritating. What you said above only pertains to 2 of their albums and the other ones have a day-late-dollar-short sound. If anything NIN is the band that continues to define music.

Posted by Anonymous | January 15, 2014 2:35 PM

2:35 - if any radiohead albums have a "day-late-dollar-short sound" it's because you listened to them 10+years after their release it appears. kinda like listening to "meet the beatles" for the first time in 1995 and saying it sounds 'dated.'

nin? you're joking right? i mean you could've said arctic monkeys or spoon or somebody but nin?

no. NO.

Posted by Anonymous | January 15, 2014 2:56 PM

King of limbs came out 2 years ago. all there albums are on the surface and only seem adventurus for people that are casual music fans- continue to drink radiohead cool-aid buddy

Posted by Anonymous | January 15, 2014 3:03 PM

Posted by Anonymous | January 15, 2014 4:37 PM

Yes, Radiohead is also done, but this is about the Pixies, one of the greatest bands of all time (and I saw them live in 1987 for the first time), who have just put out two awful e.p.s (and they are awful even if Pitchfork says so which I have no idea because I don't read that crap).

Posted by Anonymous | January 15, 2014 9:20 PM

I am a longtime Pixies fan since their first ep but Radiohead are a much better band. As for their last tour it was amazing. More danceable than any other show of theirs that I've seen. They sound very little like they did 10 years earlier. Most people want The Pixies to sound exactly like they did 25 years ago.

Posted by Anonymous | January 16, 2014 1:38 AM

i'm far from clueless, skippy (3:48) but i'm glad i made your hair hurt.

ok computer was the album the beatles would've made one day if they had stayed together. anyone who doesn't recognize that fact should be legally barred from listening to music.

and get a life, 9:20. no, neither radiohead or the pixies are "done." i'll bet they'll both be producing cutting edge music long after the hipsters here have stopped trying having kids cuz their junk don't work due to a lifetime of pretentious aloofness.

i guess it's bandwagonesque to hate the new pixies eps. they do not suck; some of the songs are as good as anything in their catalogue. they've grown but the miscreants here haven't (and can't).

the new pixies eps are better than anything by any band that claims to be from brooklyn (i.e. wisconsin no doubt) or mostly anything anyone on BV likes (except maybe arctic monkeys).

Posted by Anonymous | January 16, 2014 10:15 AM

1015 "ok computer was the album the beatles would've made one day if they had stayed together. anyone who doesn't recognize that fact should be legally barred from listening to music." You should be barred from posting. You are as clueless as they come. I love The Pixies but their music was never cutting edge. I tried listening to those new ep's and thought they were very weak except for maybe 1 song.

Posted by Anonymous | January 16, 2014 12:52 PM

why didnt they play gigantic? :)

Posted by Anonymous | January 16, 2014 1:25 PM

these pictures make everyone look like they're squatting on stage, is that the lens?

Posted by Anonymous | January 17, 2014 1:10 PM

Radiohead has made the same album over-and-over again since Kid A. They should have stopped then rather than regressing to countless albums that sound like rejects from OK Computer.

Posted by Anonymous | January 18, 2014 9:34 AM

^dumb as fuck right there

Posted by Anonymous | January 18, 2014 10:33 AM

Radiohead have stopped being interesting or challenging to actual musicians for since 3 minutes after Kid A came out (which was basically a continuation of OK C). That is about 14 years kids.

Posted by Anonymous | January 18, 2014 10:34 AM

^ The new Pixies stuff blows, but that has no bearing on the fact that Radiohead are done. The unassailable verifiable fact is that no Pixies, no Radiohead (Thom stated it himself, so i'll trust his opinion over yours Miss Pixies hater Radiohead kool aid drinker)

Posted by Anonymous | January 18, 2014 10:39 AM

Radiohead fans make QOTSA fans look well adjusted. That's pretty fucking funny (in a pathetic kind of way).

Posted by Anonymous | January 18, 2014 10:43 AM

At their very best the Pixies were deeply mediocre. And at this point, they're very VERY far from their best.

Kim Deal is a fat pig who whould rather screw over her band for an ounce of weed than actually work for it. The breeders are terrible, adn can barely pull in a crowd. Paz is a great musician and underrated player. She quit Zwan becasue Billy Corgan was creepy as hell, plus Zwan sucked hard.
