Speedy Ortiz @ Baby's All Right - 12/30/13 (via Jason Burger)
Speedy Ortiz

Exploding In Sound Records celebrated the new year in NYC with a huge show at Baby's All Right on 12/30 that included Big Ups, Porches, Roomrunner, Grass Is Green, Two Inch Astronaut, Ovlov, Krill, Dead Wives, Baked, Bad History Month, Woozy, Gnarwhal, Pile (acoustic), and special guests billed as "Average Cock," who you may have guessed was actually Speedy Ortiz. That's Speedy pictured above, and there's a high quality video of Big Ups from the show below. EIS celebrated NYE proper with a smaller show in Boston.

As discussed, Grass Is Green and Speedy Ortiz are touring together, and though that tour doesn't hit NYC, Speedy will open for Los Campesinos! at Irving Plaza on 1/22 (tickets), and since we last spoke, Grass Is Green added a NYC show happening on January 31 at Silent Barn for the 10th annual Berfest with Baked, Radical Dads, Frankie Cosmos and Poverty Hollow. They also posted another track from their upcoming Vacation Vinny LP not along ago, "Sammy So-Sick." You can stream that, along with the updated list of their tour dates, below.

Big Ups also have another show happening on February 1 at Death by Audio with Eula, Kal Marks and Malatese.

UPDATE: Big Ups also play a release party for their upcoming Eighteen Hours of Static LP at Shea Stadium on January 9 with Flagland, Mannequin Pussy and Washer; and the NYC Arts Collective Late Bloomers Kick Off Multi-Media Series at Baby's All Right on January 25 with Beach Party, Tei Shi, Charlie Wavers Quartet and DJ sets by Au Revoir Simone, Lee Bannon and The Range. Tickets for the Baby's show are on sale now and proceeds benefit the Ali Forney Center.

Porches next play Silent Barn on January 10 with My Dad, Gunk and Flagland.

And the next day at Silent Barn (1/11), the venue hosts the Gravesend Recordings Compilation Vol. 1 release party which features Krill, Palehound, Bueno, Jazz Massagers and Hannah Ch'oe, plus "possible special guests."

In more related news, Palehound and Frankie Cosmos team up again for a Brooklyn show at Trash Bar on January 17 with Eskimeaux and Florist.

Lastly, Ovlov's next NYC gig is opening for Self Defense Family and Pity Sex at Santos on 1/19 with Heroes of Modern Earth and Deep Pockets. Tickets for that show are still available. They also play Silent Barn on 2/6.

All lists of dates, along with that Grass Is Green song and Big Ups video, below...

Why do you care 'Anonymous'? It seems funny to me that you took the time to leave this post.

You took the time to post too, why do you care? Obviously you do. Some people will like them and some won't. Deal with it.

Speedy Ortiz plays a surprise set ... isn't stuff like that reserved for bands that people actually care about?

Posted by Anonymous | January 2, 2014 6:40 PM

@3:50 2 years from now we will be reading about how the singer of this band decided to go solo

As cynical as I usually am, I actually listened to a Speedy Ortiz album the other day. It's actually really cool shit once you get the angle figured out. I hope they keep it up because they are head & shoulders above most other hipshit bands that we're being incessantly bombarded with by ye olde tastemakers.

I mean, it's no iTanks and I'm sure D. would have none of it... but hey, who can bat a thousand in this blog & age?

Posted by Anonymous | January 2, 2014 11:53 PM

@11:53 so you're saying they're still mediocre but because everything else sucks and they suck just a little bit less listeners should be ok with it?

Posted by Anonymous | January 3, 2014 1:11 AM

No, actually. But funny you mention that because I was mulling that very thing over the other day. I think that I can actually state that this band is good because of the songwriting and delivery... and actually NOT because I feel like I have to settle on something. (I feel like that about just about everything else lately, however).

I've never seen the band live though, so who knows..... maybe it's all an elaborate hoax.

I'm sure everyone on BV cares about my fucking opinion though! woooooooo!

The songwriting is pretty mediocre to me. The album is ok, but the songs start to sound the same as the album moves on. Every time I hear no below I hear staind but staind is still 90's
