"Recording with Michael Gira and Swans was a dream come true. Proud to have been a part of an epicly great record. #johncongleton" - St. Vincent

Swans at Warsaw in 2013 (more by Caroline Harrison)
Swans

Swans are finally set to follow up their excellent 2012 LP The Seer with a new album, To Be Kind, on May 13 via Michael Gira's Young God label in North American and Mute worldwide. Gira points out that some of the material was developed during their 2012/13 tour, so though the full tracklist hasn't been revealed yet, it seems likely that the title track is the opening song on Swans' recent live album, Not Here / Not Now. Another song from that live album, "Bring the Sun," has been confirmed for the new LP too.

Excitingly, the album features vocals "throughout the record" from Annie Clark, aka St. Vincent (!), plus their Mute labelmate Cold Specks and cabaret singer Little Annie, who has opened for Swans before. Gira produced the album with John Congleton, who also produced the new St. Vincent album. Like The Seer, this one will be just over two hours long.

For this album Gira will be joined by Norman Westberg, Christoph Hahn, Phil Puleo, Thor Harris, and Christopher Pravdica.

The only currently announced Swans date is ATP Iceland, but Gira just announced a solo tour of Europe. All of those dates are listed, along with a live video of "To Be Kind," below...

^ you two are idiots

Posted by Anonymous | January 27, 2014 10:15 AM

Gira is like that loudmouth shrimp in the schoolyard that makes a lot of noise to avoid getting his ass kicked every day. Big noise, no substance. A total pussy.

Posted by Anonymous | January 27, 2014 10:17 AM

Oh my god I am SO EXCITED ABOUT THIS! 2014 is shaping up to be fantastic.

Posted by Anonymous | January 27, 2014 10:25 AM

awesome, well informed opinion. um, except for the fact that Swans are amazing. you forgot that part.

sorry that he wasn't friendly to you as you lurked outside the MHOW show, waiting to chastise him for his upbringing.

Total pussy

Posted by Anonymous | January 27, 2014 10:27 AM

i have swans very first release on vinyl. not sure why i bought it.

they sucked then and suck now.

lack of talent cannot be compensated for by playing at ear-splitting volume.

they suck, loud OR quiet.

Posted by Anonymous | January 27, 2014 10:31 AM

If you saw them live at all since The Seer came out (or heard their newer live album) you have heard a bunch of this already and know it will be great.

Posted by Anonymous | January 27, 2014 10:34 AM

Some people love The Swans. Some people hate them. I have yet to see anyone that is lukewarm to them.

Posted by Anonymous | January 27, 2014 10:43 AM

I don't listen to music often, but when I do it's sure as fuck not going to be Swans

Posted by Anonymous | January 27, 2014 10:50 AM

It's not a Swans comment section without your usual standard fare of snarky misfit scarves! Yee-haw!

Posted by Anonymous | January 27, 2014 10:55 AM

figures some beta male cave dweller swans fan categorizes those not compliant to their rigid beliefs as snarky misfit scarves

Posted by Anonymous | January 27, 2014 11:00 AM

NMH fans are more intelligent than Swans fans

and that's a very low bar

Posted by Anonymous | January 27, 2014 11:07 AM

Why are all you people hating on ladder-day Swans records? It seams odd.

Posted by Anonymous | January 27, 2014 11:19 AM

This album is all about Annie shredding.

Posted by Anonymous | January 27, 2014 11:46 AM

Swans are selling out shows after 30 years, so they must be doing something right.

These people are hating because Swans music forces them to confront a darkness within themselves which makes their egos freak the fuck out.

Naturally, for the weak, it's much more comfortable to ride on the bandwagon and suck the dicks of talentless indie bands than learn what it's like to have a genuine musical experience.

Posted by Anonymous | January 27, 2014 11:51 AM

^ Justin Bieber sells out shows all over the world. Thanks for admitting that by your own logic you are a fan of his as well.

Posted by Anonymous | January 27, 2014 11:58 AM

Swans ripped off Cuntz

Posted by Anonymous | January 27, 2014 11:59 AM

11:51 nah, tell that shit to the tourists, it's because those with shitty hearing can't appreciate the great mix the Swans have

Posted by Anonymous | January 27, 2014 12:00 PM

The more I listen to The Swans the more I appreciate silence

Posted by Anonymous | January 27, 2014 12:01 PM

lol @ 'the little prince'

Posted by Anonymous | January 27, 2014 12:06 PM

11:51 is like the kid that gets caught laughing in the "No Soap, Radio" joke and now has to uncomfortably explain why he was laughing

Posted by Anonymous | January 27, 2014 12:11 PM

wait, justin bieber sells out shows all over the world, after 30 years? weird. his music MUST be timeless.

Posted by Anonymous | January 27, 2014 12:12 PM

LOL The Swans selling out places ... like, Bowery Ballroom? Meanwhile, Phish actually sells out MSG.

The difference? Well for one, MSG's 20,000 seats are a couple more than BB's 800. For another, Phish sells out in places other than their home base. Third, a few Phish songs are actually listenable whereas not a single Swans song is.

"These people are hating because Swans music forces them to confront a darkness within themselves which makes their egos freak the fuck out"

1:08 rocks the gray pony tail, tells the young ladies all about his 7 1/2 "

Posted by Anonymous | January 27, 2014 1:18 PM

Swans fans are so sensitive! Must be all of that darkness within themselves they confront.

Posted by Anonymous | January 27, 2014 2:01 PM

Victoria Justice's ego freaks the freak out. Maybe she should open for Gira. Did you know the stress on Gira is in the second syllable? Weird. Freaks my ego out.

Posted by Anonymous | January 27, 2014 2:22 PM

I thought the Swans were the scarves flavor-of-the-month band. Maybe that month already expired? lolololol

You twerps need another band you "liked" to hate on; gotta catch up.

i wish gira would stop tarnishing his once flawless discography... i enjoyed all of the original swans albums as well as all of his solos and even most of the angels of light material...its a shame that this washed up money-grabber has to latch on to hacks like st vincent to "stay relevant" whilst putting out mediocre watered down albums under the swans monicker.

Posted by Anonymous | January 27, 2014 4:23 PM

The reunited Swans suck, a mere nostalgia act. The first reunion album was Angels of Light marketed as Swans for a desperate money grab, the Seer was total garbage, but loser fans said it was a return to form because it had some feedback on it like in the old days. Swans broke up at the perfect time, now they've become just another sad nostalgia act ruining their legacy, like Black Flag/Flag, Smashing Pumpkins, Stooges, Pixies etc, etc.

Posted by Anonymous | January 27, 2014 4:59 PM

12:19 - Ha. Phish....Music you need to be fucked up on drugs to tolerate/convention for Deadheads that are still crying over the death of Garcia...

Posted by Anonymous | January 27, 2014 5:25 PM

at least Garcia didn't get stabbed to death in his own house by a entre nous gone askew

Posted by Anonymous | January 27, 2014 5:51 PM

Do they still have Aquaman playing drums?

Posted by Anonymous | January 27, 2014 9:29 PM

I watched the video above. Phish is honestly way less boring.

Posted by Anonymous | January 27, 2014 11:29 PM

Gira thinks he's too cool to write a song like Fluffhead, LOL

Posted by Anonymous | January 28, 2014 12:09 AM

Swans has awful lyrics. Spiritual biblical made up nonsense, white light. Get over is all biys we havea new things o sounds.

oh that's why the comments on this site are idiotic. You don't have to leave an email. Phish? Are you fucking real? Sorry to harsh your mellow dude.

Posted by Anonymous | January 28, 2014 11:37 AM

Swans suck so much you guys, omg yes totally. You should listen to my opinions, they are valid. I am so glad I have the internet to let the world know about how I feel because I know everyone is listening when I post online. Good ol' internets, you allow me to have opinions and feel like a big person.

Stir the post some more.

lol Phish

5:22 is trying too hard

Posted by Anonymous | January 29, 2014 8:44 PM

When Swans sell_out 4 nights at MSG then you all can laugh at Phish. Until then, shut the fuck up about selling_out small clubs after 30 years like that is some kind of accomplishment. Last time I checked even Billy Squire was doing that. Yes, the Swans are no better than Billy Squire.

Posted by Anonymous | January 29, 2014 8:53 PM

11:59 hasn't even been to a fucking Lazer Quest, let alone a vision quest.

Posted by Anonymous | January 29, 2014 10:22 PM

SWANS fans are more annoying than TOOL fans.

Posted by Bill Tit | January 29, 2014 11:17 PM

^ that's b/c Swans fans ARE tools amirite?

Posted by Anonymous | January 30, 2014 11:24 AM

Your life is sad :)

Posted by Anonymous | February 1, 2014 10:29 PM

Having seen them on the final date of their first breakup tour, I can confirm that they sucked real bad then and needed a break.

The idea of Swans lately is often better than the actual thing - in terms of records, anyway.

(goes back to ravaging ravishing leggy young Vassar undergrads)

Posted by Crosseyed Sniper | February 2, 2014 1:02 AM

Oh my goodness! I adore this band

Posted by Samuelson | February 24, 2014 5:18 AM

I saw SWANS in Columbus, OH last July. They opened with this song. Seeing this video takes me right back. Thanks for uploading.
