This weekend marks the sixth installment of Dreams Were Made for Mortals, the metal-oriented group art show curated by Dysrhythmia/Krallice visual artist Karlynn Holland. The show will take place at Saint Vitus on Sunday (1/19) and will run until late. Notable artists include Krallice guitarist & all-around shred maven Mick Barr, Agalloch/Ludicra drummer Aesop Dekker, Candiria axeman John LaMacchia, & BV photographers Caroline Harrison and Lukas Hodge. There are some notable DJs too, including Mike Hill of Tombs, Primitive Weapons frontman/Saint Vitus event coordinator Dave Castillo, and a mix by the British doom band Conan.

Speaking of Agalloch, have we mentioned that they were in the studio recently?

The Invisible Oranges co-presented A389 Tenth Anniversary Bash starts in earnest down in Baltimore today (1/17). Tickets will be available at the door if you’re in town and didn’t think ahead.

Some closer-to-home live heavy music options for this weekend include Cleanteeth at the Acheron tonight, Malignancy / Dracaris / Hammer Fight at Tobacco Road on Saturday (1/18), and Gnaw / Sonic Suicide Squad / Insect Ark Saturday at the Acheron. Don’t forget to keep an eye on our badass New York Metal Show Calendar for the latest.

The 2014 package tour season is officially underway too. The Amon Amarth / Enslaved / Skeletonwitch tour gets started tonight in Las Vegas — we started giving away tickets to select dates on IO’s East Village Radio show. Don’t forget to tune in every Tuesday at 10pm for giveaways, interviews, and loads of killer tunes. The Amon Amarth tour hits NYC on February 4. We’re also giving away tickets to this year’s awesome installment of the Metal Alliance Tour, which features Behemoth, 1349, Goatwhore, Inquisition, and Black Crown Initiate, and which hits NYC on April 19.

The great death metal band Wormed have signed to Season of Mist and are writing material for the follow-up to 2013’s killer Exodromos.

Members of local live mainstays Mutilation Rites and Magrudergrind have formed a sludge side project called Ruine. Stream a track below.

Over on IO this week, we spoke to Pelle Åhman of In Solitude and investigated the world of all-female Japanese power metal bands. We streamed new music by Warfather, Astrophobos, Ered Wethrin, and Solar Halos (whom we also interviewed). And, as ever, we ran down all the new metal fit to buy.
