Vivian Girls @ MHOW, Feb. 2013 (more by Amanda Hatfield)
Vivian Girls

Brooklyn, New York, March 2007: we started making music together and became what we know as Vivian Girls. It's been a long and crazy journey in the seven years since, and we feel as though the time has finally come to let our band rest in peace. It's been an experience that we'll look back on and cherish and we'd like to thank you for sharing it with us. We have had such an amazing time being a band, touring the world, releasing records and meeting all of you....

...Thank you to everyone who has helped us along the way, everyone who has come to our shows, bought our records and supported us, and everyone we will meet in the future.

XOXO
Vivian Girls (via P4k)

Before Vivian Girls go their separate ways, Katie, Cassie and Ali will play two goodbye shows: February 14th at The Church on York in Los Angeles (tix), and Brooklyn's Death by Audio on March 1. Advance tickets for the DbA show are on sale now and sold out.

UPDATE: They added a second final show in Brooklyn, this one at Baby's All Right the next day (3/2) and tickets are on sale now.

2016's Coachella reunion

Posted by Anonymous | January 22, 2014 1:07 PM

Best band ever!

Posted by Anonymous | January 22, 2014 1:08 PM

Good riddance (even though they've really been gone for 2 or 3 years and this was just making it official).

This band was one of the bands that killed the garage rock revival. When Vice cared for 5 seconds. Indifferent, fashionista hipsters making indifferent drone garage rock. No life, no vibrancy. Who the hell wants that? Idiots, that's who. They made the Strokes and Interpol seem like goddamn Iggy Pop.

Let's all remember that ridiculous bruise cruise with the shock-value turds the Black Lips and this band and all the rest. That was the death of rock n roll, the second/third/fourth time.

Also Jay Reatard dying. That helped killed it all. He was one of the last rockers who could actually rock. Ty Segall ain't saving shit. And as for Jack White well...

Hold onto your hats.

Posted by Anonymous | January 22, 2014 1:15 PM

Making me all nostalgic for 2009 when this band was shoved down our throats. You wouldnt go three weeks without them playing a show in NYC. Too bad they couldn't make it.

Posted by Anonymous | January 22, 2014 1:18 PM

^^ haha yes

"babies" must be really taking off

good riddance. more three -chord-single-note-lead rich kid punk bullshit no one needs

Posted by Anonymous | January 22, 2014 1:21 PM

Everyone shitting on this band falls asleep alone on a crusty pile of bootleg Godspeed tapes. Your parents are ashamed of you and will soon phase you out of their yearly Christmas letter.

Posted by Anonymous | January 22, 2014 1:24 PM

i liked vivian girls just fine (though frankie wrote their best song), but their other splinter groups are better -- babies being the best of them all.

Posted by Anonymous | January 22, 2014 1:24 PM

at least i don't eat up fake DIY like a Converse-wearing American Spirits-smoking shithead who probably lives in the Edge

Posted by Anonymous | January 22, 2014 1:26 PM

Funny how after god knows how many shows they played in NYC their last show ever is at the tiny DBA. Good riddance, terrible band.

Posted by Anonymous | January 22, 2014 1:30 PM

At least that, yes. Glad to see someone has it all figured out.

Posted by Anonymous | January 22, 2014 1:31 PM

babies is the same band as vivian girls. if you pretend you can tell the difference you probably work for the PR companies cassie has apparently to paid have this shit plastered on every hypeblog for the past five years

Posted by Anonymous | January 22, 2014 1:31 PM

yeah frankie rose should really play drums for this show - then i'd go.

Posted by Anonymous | January 22, 2014 1:33 PM

"Your parents are ashamed of you and will soon phase you out of their yearly Christmas letter."

May be the best thing ever written on BV.

*slow clap*

Posted by Anonymous | January 22, 2014 1:36 PM

Vivian Girls? I only listen to the real, real authentic shit. Like, if you play shows and try to get an audience, you're fake. If you have the balls to record your shit to tape, you're fucking Hitler. If you're not a homeless person clanking bottles together, mumbling incoherent lyrics about the mircochip Danny Glover planted in your nipple and smoking crack, I don't want to hear your shit.

Posted by Anonymous | January 22, 2014 1:37 PM

yes vivian girls were just a struggling authentic young band signed to the agency group who were trying to make it in this tough DIY world whilst only being friends with real estate and woods who run a record label and whilst only sharing an agent with gary numan. shame on ppl shitting on this band!!

Posted by indie fan | January 22, 2014 1:48 PM

this cassette I got of the yellow dogs murder audio was pretty punk, but then I realized they were living in a house. and could afford guns. and one guy survived. fucking posers.

Posted by Anonymous | January 22, 2014 1:50 PM

1:37 - that homeless person will be selling out T5 and Coachella next year!

Posted by Anonymous | January 22, 2014 1:51 PM

you guys are all garbage

Posted by Anonymous | January 22, 2014 1:51 PM

man their glasslands guestlist is certainly out in force making stupid and offensive comparisons to defend them being signed to the same management group as 3 doors down

Posted by Anonymous | January 22, 2014 1:52 PM

hey 1:26 I live in The Edge fuck you. at least I can afford it

Posted by Anonymous | January 22, 2014 2:03 PM

"Your parents are ashamed of you and will soon phase you out of their yearly Christmas letter."

-Mine are dead. Guess I win.

Also- Vivian Girls are awful and I will shed no tears. Stop making music. Start making money with a career in something like accounting or ship breaking.

Posted by Anonymous | January 22, 2014 2:03 PM

I for one am going to miss seeing pics of KBK's 2 dear friends grace the webpages of BV. Man, they are just about perfect.

Posted by Anonymous | January 22, 2014 2:05 PM

^Your Family is Dumb

Posted by Anonymous | January 22, 2014 2:07 PM

Does this mean Williamsburg is dead?

Posted by Anonymous | January 22, 2014 2:09 PM

Sold out!

They sold out Dba faster than Real Estate sold out Baby's Alright, by about 10 hours.

Posted by Anonymous | January 22, 2014 2:09 PM

this song is pretty good: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CRHSOH1S0QI though like someone pointed out, written by frankie rose

Posted by Anonymous | January 22, 2014 2:17 PM

oh, 2:07 that's not cool. you butthole.

Posted by Anonymous | January 22, 2014 2:39 PM

what a terrible fucking band

Posted by Anonymous | January 22, 2014 2:50 PM

I heard Lena Dunham is gonna be at the show! So stoked!!!

Posted by Anonymous | January 22, 2014 2:54 PM

LOL, some final show. Way to schedule another show the day after.

Posted by Anonymous | January 22, 2014 2:55 PM

Back on sale cockbags

Posted by Anonymous | January 22, 2014 3:02 PM

2:54 LOL

Posted by Anonymous | January 22, 2014 3:06 PM

I just read on Pitchfork that Lena Dunham wrote an open letter to the VG asking them not to break up

Posted by Anonymous | January 22, 2014 3:08 PM

Good riddance, but this cycle of overhyped shit biting the dust to the care of absolutely no one 2 years later will just repeat itself when basement pop-punk bands like Swearin' break up.

Posted by Anonymous | January 22, 2014 3:14 PM

Babies has a good live show, but the Morby songs are the solid ones on the records.

Posted by Anonymous | January 22, 2014 3:17 PM

this show should be at t5

Posted by Anonymous | January 22, 2014 3:40 PM

maybe 2 shows at DBA?

Posted by Anonymous | January 22, 2014 3:44 PM

can't keep writing songs about going on second dates, eh girls?

Posted by Anonymous | January 22, 2014 3:46 PM

move it to MSG like the last LCD show!

Posted by Anonymous | January 22, 2014 3:56 PM

Boobs.

Posted by Anonymous | January 22, 2014 4:11 PM

Is the fat one still fat?

Posted by Anonymous | January 22, 2014 4:14 PM

No one's arguing that you don't have the money to live at The Edge, genius. The complaint is against the cultural cluelessness displayed by choosing to live there, which is all the more reinforced by your only statement of self-justification being: "I have more money than the you!"

Posted by Anonymous | January 22, 2014 4:15 PM

^ @4:14

I agree with your comment to this Edge guy on a fundamental level.

Though I feel arguing about the "cultural cluelessness" of someone choosing to live in a expensive apartment in a ~150 year old neighborhood filled with people from the mid-west, going through it's second makeover in ~20 years, in a country only ~250 years old seems futile.

If you want culture, go get culture. Go sit on a park bench that's older than your country. You can create your own authentic experience. It's the reason you moved from Ohio.

Posted by Anonymous | January 22, 2014 4:48 PM

Are the kids crushed when they move from the mid-west to Brooklyn and discover they technically live on Long Island?

Posted by Anonymous | January 22, 2014 5:10 PM

LOL 203!

Posted by Anonymous | January 22, 2014 5:27 PM

way to advertise the DBA show specifically as the final show and then add another....that's fucking class right there.

Posted by Anonymous | January 22, 2014 5:42 PM

It's heartening to see so many here hate this band as much as I do and are enjoying this pathetic and weak breakup announcement as much as I am. And the few defenses of this band here are pathetic. Actually yeah, I do like Godspeed. Sorry? If I think this band of pretend-disinterested posers that can barely play is shit than I only like... "homeless person clanking bottles together" -- that's the best you PR hacks and others with no taste can come up with to defend these pathetic, wannabe sellouts?

Looking forward to a repeat of this thread when it's about Best Coast in 2016.

Posted by Anonymous | January 22, 2014 5:54 PM

The best way to understand just how bad the Vivian Girls actually are/were is to hear Cassie solo without a rhythm section and without all that reverb on her voice. Solo, its painful, she's so bad. Weak strumming guitar and off-key vocals.

Posted by Anonymous | January 22, 2014 6:03 PM

Has anyone asked Frankie Rose for a comment yet?

Posted by Anonymous | January 22, 2014 6:05 PM

Folks. Only fifty-four comments? Perhaps you have not read this clearly. THE VIVIAN GIRLS ARE BREAKING UP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Now, snap to it and give me your best. I know you won't let me down.

Posted by Anonymous | January 22, 2014 6:06 PM

>>at least i don't eat up fake DIY like a Converse-wearing American Spirits-smoking shithead who probably lives in the Edge

#cotd

you win the internets.

Posted by Anonymous | January 22, 2014 6:08 PM

ice cream tattoo artist here. really upset with the scalper scum that bought up tickets to our dba show. we wanted this to be a hometown blowout, but it looks like people are being major league assholes and reselling tickets for a pretty penny. this makes us none too pleased. we're talking to some promoters to see if we can add a few more shows for you guys. for now, there's one at baby's a'ite. we're seeing if we can throw some more gigs at the harket motel. you know the place. stay tuned for that info. love you all.

Posted by Anonymous | January 22, 2014 6:21 PM

I get that they were a bad band, but it's sort of a drag how dead the feeling of the 2009-10ish era seems to be now. I think anyone who was going to a lot of shows then knows that it was actually pretty rad, and has only gotten bad in light of all the totally half-assed copies of bands that have sprung up after and also the poor output of some of the main bands (like VG).

That fact that it was replaced by the weird molly k-hole synth wave 285 Kent shit is sad to me, and that that is now being replaced by, I don't even know. Whatever. It was a fun time to be into music, fun enough that I definitely gave them a pass when it was happening, but way less so later on.

Posted by Anonymous | January 22, 2014 6:44 PM

^yep

Posted by Anonymous | January 22, 2014 6:56 PM

I'm all for confidence but this "scene" celebrates the fuck out of itself.

Posted by Anonymous | January 22, 2014 6:59 PM

Yeah, self-celebrating scenes suck. That's why I'm only down with Godspeed and bands with real ethics. Like, they'll win a prize and donate the money to music programs in jail, because everyone who has ever been to jail knows that's exactly what you want instead of better food or a comfy pair of slippers. A better jobs assimilation program? Fuck that. You want guitars. I mean, they didn't actually donate the money yet--you know, because Canadian jails refuse money--but the intent is there. Fuck Vivian girls. I hope they go to lady prison in Canada one day and get some Godspeed funded talent. Bitches.

Posted by Anonymous | January 22, 2014 7:53 PM

What a stupid-ass "rant." Go back to clown school, junior.

Posted by Anonymous | January 22, 2014 8:02 PM

Godspeed are just self-loathing Jews. Plenty of those around.

Posted by Anonymous | January 22, 2014 8:13 PM

@9:14, yeah for sure. Despite always being sort of an eye-roll I seem them as a band and that era as connected kind of, because they were one of the "it" bands then. Does that era or mini-era or whatever get mentioned alot here? I never read this site, I just thought it would be fun to come here and anonymously comment.

Posted by Anonymous | January 22, 2014 9:45 PM

Williamsburg is so dead. Long live Newark.

Posted by Anonymous | January 22, 2014 9:54 PM

CASSIE GAVE MY FRIEND HERPES. NO FUCKING JOKE!

Posted by Anonymous | January 23, 2014 3:32 PM

allie gonna be there or no?

Posted by Anonymous | January 23, 2014 10:40 PM

Lol at the person lamenting the loss of the spirit of the 2009-10 era. So many fake copy bands came about after!!

Are you serious? I came to Brooklyn in 2005 and I was self aware enough to know it was already on its way out and then some.

I guess it's all about perspective though. Long live the golden days. Whenever you may have lived them in your own little made up world.

Posted by Anonymous | January 24, 2014 1:50 AM

Never got the haters (dudes in shitty bands, I suppose). This band was rad. 3rd LP was a killer. Was hoping for a new album. Hopefully Cassie has an interesting solo thing on the horizon.

Posted by Anonymous | January 27, 2014 2:17 AM

okay wtf? ^

Posted by Anonymous | February 15, 2014 8:06 PM

yeah damn that's dark 2:12, I'm no prude, but slow your roll

Posted by Anonymous | February 15, 2014 8:08 PM

I fucking love these guys.

Posted by Weimer | February 26, 2014 5:31 AM

get bent

Posted by blayne | March 1, 2014 3:54 PM

how big are KBK's tits?

Posted by Anonymous | September 26, 2014 1:50 AM

wow. i feel like all their songs consist of the same vocal and drum patterns, just barely switching the tempos and barely adjusting the melodies. can't hear a word they say in any song, whether its live or not. it's like a parallel universe where the beach boys have turned into the beach girls, they can't sing, and they just learned how to play instruments. if you want a unique sound, you can't just go back in time and poorly perform an old one, which is what seems to be happening here.
