Happy 2014! Browse our full NYC show calendar for all of tonight’s shows, of which there are not many. Here are the highlights…

Thurston Moore @ The Stone
Sonic Youth/Chelsea Light Moving guitar destroyer Thurston Moore continues his residency at The Stone tonight. The 8 PM show is a trio set with Gene Moore (guitar) and Marc Edwards (drums), and the 10 PM show sees that same trio joined by Daniel Carter (sax) and Gene Janas (bass).

Friend Roulette, Glockabelle, Shapes on Tape @ Pianos
NYC chamber pop band Friend Roulette channel the kind of stuff we’ve heard from Sufjan Stevens and St. Vincent, and if you dig that stuff, Friend Roulette may be up your alley too.

Joseph Arthur, Bobby Bare Jr. @ City Winery
The multitalented Joseph Arthur returned with two albums this year — The Ballad of Boogie Christ acts 1 and 2 — and is currently touring with REM’s Mike Mills on bass. His live shows are pretty special, often incorporating Arthur’s painting into the performance. Tickets are still available.

New Year’s Day is also good for catching up on movies. Have you seen Inside Llewyn Davis, The Wolf of Wall St, The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, Her, Anchorman 2, or American Hustle yet?
