Thurston Moore at Bowery Ballroom in April (more by Greg Cristman)
Thurston Moore
Doggy drunk

Happy 2014! Browse our full NYC show calendar for all of tonight's shows, of which there are not many. Here are the highlights...

Thurston Moore @ The Stone
Sonic Youth/Chelsea Light Moving guitar destroyer Thurston Moore continues his residency at The Stone tonight. The 8 PM show is a trio set with Gene Moore (guitar) and Marc Edwards (drums), and the 10 PM show sees that same trio joined by Daniel Carter (sax) and Gene Janas (bass).

Friend Roulette, Glockabelle, Shapes on Tape @ Pianos
NYC chamber pop band Friend Roulette channel the kind of stuff we've heard from Sufjan Stevens and St. Vincent, and if you dig that stuff, Friend Roulette may be up your alley too.

Joseph Arthur, Bobby Bare Jr. @ City Winery
The multitalented Joseph Arthur returned with two albums this year -- The Ballad of Boogie Christ acts 1 and 2 -- and is currently touring with REM's Mike Mills on bass. His live shows are pretty special, often incorporating Arthur's painting into the performance. Tickets are still available.

New Year's Day is also good for catching up on movies. Have you seen Inside Llewyn Davis, The Wolf of Wall St, The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, Her, Anchorman 2, or American Hustle yet?

For laughs, check out the NYC Comedy calendar too.

And so we are told this is the hummus age
The chick pea's the reason for the trolls we wage
I want to dip in it, dip in it night and day
Nothing changes on New Years Day

If Thurston wasn't such a sleazy old horn dog, then this residency would have been a Sonic Youth residency. It would gave been the hipster equivalent of the Billy Joel residency. Instead we get John Zorn and Thurston's old wrinkled ballsacks wanking away, generating shitty jazz odyssey rock. Such a shame.

I'm sorta surprised that Thirsty Thurston didn't curate himself up some young groupie ass.

if you are constipated on the bowl, hummus makes a great stool softener.

In one episode before the Phish concert on Saturday, a man the police identified as John Picrqlisi, 34, offered to keep watch as his partners, Steven Powers, 47, and Jeffrey Powers, 52, sold some mushrooms on the southwest corner of Eighth Avenue and 33rd Street, according to a criminal complaint.

“Make sure you don’t get caught, cops are everywhere,” Mr. Picrqlisi yelled, according to the complaint.

The buyer, who paid $40 for the drugs, was an undercover officer. The three men were arrested and charged with criminal sale of a controlled substance. According to the complaint, Jeffrey Powers had 424 capsules of MDMA, 71 strips of LSD and 14 bags of mushrooms in his pants.

Deadmua5 at Nassau Colosseum in Long Island last night, NYE :: via stubhub: $12 floor , $6 Lower level. Tons of tix avail. Empty rows throughout. I was there. It was marginally fun. Hilarious fail.
