Thurston Moore w/ Sonic Youth at Battery Park in 2008 (more by Jason Bergman)
Thurston Moore

Browse our full NYC show calendar for all of tonight's shows. Here are some highlights...

Thurston Moore, White Out @ The Stone
Sonic Youth/Chelsea Light Moving guitar destroyer Thurston Moore wraps up his residency at The Stone tonight. The 8 PM show is with Tom Surgal of experimental duo White Out, and then for the 10 PM show, Tom's bandmate Lin Culbertson joins them, making for a White Out trio set with Thurston on guitar (which has happened before).

Autodrone, Mahogany, Highly Suspect, Kissing Is A Crime @ Mercury Lounge
Thaw out with a double-dose of local dreampop via Autodrone and Mahogany, plus local post-punk band Kissing Is A Crime and Highly Suspect.

Great Caesar, The Guru, Cold Fronts, Alex G @ Knitting Factory
If you're going to this show, we most recommend getting there early to catch opener Alex G, whose lo-fi songwriting is pretty good, and he's got a full band live.

Celestial Shore, Wei Zhongle, Tom Blacklung and the Smokestacks, Girls & God @ Death by Audio
Some cool bands at DbA tonight, including Brooklyn mathy indie pop band Celestial Shore.

Hannibal Buress @ Knitting Factory
Big league comedy talent (Chris Rock, Louis CK, etc) show up regularly (and unannounced) for Hannibal's very popular free comedy show at Knitting Factory's front bar. Get there early.

Mahogany is so bad live

personally think that drooling over Haim, as the writer of this piece does, is not only unprofessional but it also discriminates other bands with much better musicians and singers than this clearly a non 'alternative' band but totally mainstream stupid pop. Their songs are terribly silly, cheesy, and most songs in their "debut album" were written or co-written by other artists - they're just as bad as the ones written by Haim alone. I saw Haim live at a festival and because they didn't have any songs to play (no recording at all) they started to chit-chat on the stage to the point that serious music lovers left because of the band's verbal vulgarity (the oldest sister, 28 years-old bassist screamed the word "fuck" 17 times while on the stage, something that many people totally disliked. They are being promoted for being "charming" and "beautiful" nothing could be further from the truth. A shame that many "critics" have joined the bandwagon hype writing "reviews" that make your stomach turn. Never saw anything like it before. It's totally pathetic and says a lot about the people writing this garbage while they ignore the best bands and solo artists. By the way, Lorde made these "valley girls" look like idiots when she took centre stage at Webster Hall and grabbing the microphone from the Haim singer, she taught them a lesson in songwriting and voice. There's a picture taken at this moment, showing Haim's younger sister, Alana, trying to capture the attention of the public (while the 17 yrs-old Lorde was singing), with her foolish behavior; her sister Danielle looking unhappy and her jaw dropping watching Lorde sing, and the bassist cursing while Lorde was singing. The public went crazy for the 17 yrs-old Lorde to the end. Amazing show by Lorde.

ANOTHER FORMAT CHANGE?

Please go away Thurston. Please.

This residency is ruining the reputation and legacy of sonic youth. A few middle-aged smug dudes who never practiced together making nonsense bleets of improvisational "jazz." I went last night. Terrible is a kind word to describe the event. Most of the audience was bored and unimpressed but there are a few who think this is brilliant. Very few though.

Obama sucks.

I remember that show in Battery Park. Lots of middle period meh-core, lots of Kim sans bass dancing around, lots of Thurston ranting about how great Obama was. Pretty mediocre SY show overall. Prospect Park absolutely blew it away, but I get how you can't run the same photos each time Thurston plays, which these days is approaching Speedy Ortiz frequency.
