'60s psych lovers The Black Angels and an actual '60s psych legend Roky Erickson recently kicked off a tour together that brought the fellow Austinites to NYC for a free Converse Rubber Tracks Live show at Music Hall of Williamsburg this past Tuesday (2/18). For this tour, Roky's been playing mostly 13th Floor Elevators songs, including classics like "You're Gonna Miss Me" and "Reverberation (Doubt)." Black Angels, meanwhile, mixed it up, giving attention to material from all of their albums, and playing a new song too. The Swollen Fox caught the Philly show two days earlier and wrote:

Despite my altered state, I remained hyper aware of every detail of sound, from the growl of Christian Bland's guitar to the proximal fear and hallucinations found within the lyrics of Alex Maas. Drummer Stephanie Bailey kept time for the out of body experience. Her technique was particularly enthralling during "I Hear Colors (Chromasthesia)," arms waving like the conductor of a symphony, all the while sounding as though she is simultaneously operating a jackhammer and drumming upon fine china.
Pictures of the MHOW show, in all its trippy glory, including shots of Black Angels' and Roky's setlists (though the Black Angels one doesn't look complete) and openers The Denzels, are in this post.

They continue, with some videos too, below...

I'm glad there was so many Elevators songs played and I love Roky, but his set was sad to see. His guitar is more of a prop and not in the mix at all (not that it matters, he only kind of strums a chord or two per song). He misses and leaves out lines in almost every song. He looks scared of the crowd, like a deer in headlights. The band had to carry all of the weight.

I'm glad he's doing much better than he was, but the show left me feeling depressed.

The sound for the Black Angels was awful, particularly those piercing one chord keyboard notes they decide to add to their new tracks. It is hard when members switch instruments so often/have volume wars with each other. Disappointing show to say the least.

the question is, who peed into pee-squared's mama's vajay?

Posted by Anonymous | February 20, 2014 10:41 AM

the question is, do the black angels own bmw's.

Doubtful, but 4 out of 5 of them were wearing Converse during the set.

Roky looks and sounds horrible - he put on so much weight. Glad to see the guy is out there playing though. This gig just looks pathetic.

So glad I was there when he played Southpaw - that gig was special.

Odd no mention of Liquid Light Lab doing the lights. Why you no mention them?

The Black Angels are terrible. I saw them play with Black Mountain a few years ago and it was fucking painful. Thank god Black Mountain came on to cleanse my ears of that rubbish.

Wow, that clip from Southpaw is a world of difference from this show.

I am with 9.26: Roky is getting better but it's still a depressing thing to witness.
The Black Angels were great. I was on the left side, and the sound was good.

Disagree with 11:54 completely. Roky is not getting better. He is actually getting worse than he was around 2007-2008

11:42 - Totally agreed. The light effects were one of the best parts of the show. Liquid Light Lab definitely deserves more love and props than they're getting.

Don't say you weren't warned about the sound. Read the original topic announding this show.

2:45 glad I'm not the only one... they've done lights for a number of shows at Bowery and MHOW but never get any recognition. everytime I see that dude in the back I know the show is going to be special.

Posted by Anonymous | February 20, 2014 2:56 PM

11:42/2:56 - Yep...saw LLL at the Dead Meadow show at Bowery Ballroom last week, where they were equally awesome!

bob Dylan
roky erickson

other than the questionable piano solos, the band sounded good. it's tough to talk shit about the sound in that room, especially for a free show. thought it sounded great.
