Meyers, Armisen and the new 'Late Night' house band...
Armisen

Fred Armisen will be the bandleader on NBC's Late Night with Seth Meyers. The host (and former SNL Weekend Update anchor) tweeted the above picture this afternoon writing, "Fred will curate and lead the band, and continue to run it even when he's off shooting Portlandia." The rest of the band includes Girls Vs. Boys bassist (and big time indie rock producer ) Eli Janney and, as Stereogum notes, that the band looks to include Seth Jabour and Syd Butler of Les Savy Fav. Armisen and LSV are old pals. The new Late Night makes its debut on February 24 on NBC.

The Roots, meanwhile, will remain Jimmy Fallon's house band when he takes over The Tonight Show on February 17. (Keeping Questlove and crew was part of the reason the show is moving back to NYC.) Guests the first week of the show include Will Smith and U2 (2/17), Lady Gaga (2/18), The Arcade Fire (2/20) and, here's a shocker, Justin Timberlake (2/21).

In related news, Portlandia returns February 27 for its fourth season on IFC. Musical guest stars to look out for include TVOTR's Tunde Adebimpe, former Dead Kennedys frontman Jello Biafra, Wilco's Jeff Tweedy and QOTSA frontman Josh Homme.

Will Fallon's show still have those risers behind the musical guests where audience members would stand around awkwardly and feign enjoying the music of bands they've never heard of? That was a fantastic gimmick.

I love Seth Jabour's guitar playing. Just like the Edge, simple riffs with lots of tasty delay.

^ Those are terrible. And, nice grammar. A+

Fred Armisen should not be playing second fiddle to the total HACK that is Seth Myers

It's worth repeating, from past post, that with KEXP, it's no longer "where the music matters", it's where the music pays the bills. They sold out, and the only thing they have in their favor is the memory of what it used to be. When it really mattered and was adventurous: KCMU.

show failure incoming...

Midwestern hayseeds that dream of one day seeing the big city will eat this shit up. Don't think so? How long was Friends on the air?

Posted by Anonymous | February 10, 2014 5:33 PM

Leno will be back in 6 months. Fallon might go to cable after that. Seth Meyers will replace Leno in 5 years.

This could be fun? I will watch just for Fred, Ian Rubbish should crash a show every once in awhile

Posted by intro b | February 10, 2014 7:31 PM

I always felt that Jimmy Fallon is a shit version of Mike Myers. Yes?

Posted by Anonymous | February 10, 2014 7:36 PM

You'd think the people on this blog would be happier about 2 major shows bringing lots new creative jobs from LA back to NYC.

Posted by Anonymous | February 10, 2014 9:08 PM

Now you'll have TWO places to see all of the bands on tv that you pretend to loathe.

Armisen is a sick drummer. Dig on some Trenchmouth, herbs.

12:39 lolz

Posted by Anonymous | February 11, 2014 5:45 AM

I hope Armisen will do that thing where he stares and pretends he's from a made-up country. That is so funny.

Please let this show get cancelled after a week.

TIM HARRINGTON FOR MASTURBATING BEAR

Posted by Anonymous | February 11, 2014 7:47 AM

Armisen is a bit creepy. I really tried to like his SNL and Portlandia schtick, but everything he does is cringe-worthy / creepy. Brownstein is so much cooler.

Jimmy Fallon is just a rip of the Ted Mosby character from HIMYM.

Seth Myers had to write 10 jokes per week (for his Weekend Update) and could barely pull that off. How is he gonna come up with daily stuff?

Posted by Anonymous | February 11, 2014 8:04 AM

^^ Bro, what are talking about?

Fred Armisen is the Pussy Riot of comedy

"show failure incoming..."

We can only hope. I also agree with the guy 5:33 that posted below you too.

Posted by Anonymous | February 11, 2014 10:19 AM

The staring creepy foreign guy is classic Armisen. And nothing is better than when he pretends to be some kind of British punk/Mod. And lets not forget his Obama. Pure comedic gold. Almost as genius Andy Kaufman.

"Fred did a beautiful rendition of 'Blackbird' at The Howard Stern birthday show"

I remember when Baba Booey himself did his rendition some time back. What a weird feeling...

Posted by Anonymous | February 11, 2014 10:38 AM

Armisen is the king of Ugly Guy comedy. The only reason people laugh at him is because he is terribly bad looking. Think of a handsome man doing his schtick, and you will see the truth. People are laughing at him because he is ugly.

Posted by Fris Charley | February 11, 2014 4:21 PM

Armisen is a swell guy and all but those other hacks, especially the Savy Fav guys have no business playing in the late night band. I'm sure he could dig up some better talent than that lot.

Posted by Anonymous | February 11, 2014 5:31 PM

Tired of his "poor little ugly man" routine. He's like the ugly redhead who will never be found attractive, so grows a handlebar moustache to fit in with the other uglies for a goof.

TEAM COCO!!

Posted by TEAM COCO!! | February 11, 2014 9:04 PM

^ This. I'm with Coco. Conan's the rightful heir of The Tonight Show.

Here's to hoping Jay Leno, Jimmy Fallon, and Seth Meyers are all shot in the face and murdered John Lennon style (because he was a piece of shit hack too & totally fucking deserved it).

10:50 again. I know it's been a few days and most of you have moved on, but I've changed my mind. Super stoked now. Thanks.
