The National @ Barclays Center, 2013 (more by Dana (distortion) Yavin)
The National

Now that the Sochi Olympics are over, NBC is back to its regular schedule. Late Night with Seth Myers made it's not-bad debut last night with its Fred Armisen-led indie-all-star house band, and The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon has been on since last week. Have you checked out either? Myers seemed a little stiff, still trying to get out of 'Weekend Update' mode, but there were some good comedy bits I thought.

SNL returns this week (3/1) as well with Beck as musical guest and Jim Parsons as host. Next Saturday (March 8), Girls creator/star Lena Dunham will host with musical guest The National. Way to go, guys!

Beck's new album, Morning Phase, was released today (2/25) and you can stream it on Rdio.

The National continue their world tour and will play two Celebrate Brooklyn! shows in Prospect Park in June.

its, not it's.

Posted by Anonymous | February 25, 2014 12:41 PM

This is great news!

Posted by Anonymous | February 25, 2014 12:42 PM

this news makes me feel tired

Posted by Anonymous | February 25, 2014 12:53 PM

I can see it now. A nasty, naked Lena Dunham asleep on the toilet listening to The National. Absolutely must-not-see tv.

Posted by Anonymous | February 25, 2014 1:02 PM

I guess if I can't fall asleep on that Saturday, I can always watch the National.

Posted by Anonymous | February 25, 2014 1:07 PM

^Wow you're funny! Is this an original joke? You thought this one up all by yourself?

Posted by Anonymous | February 25, 2014 1:19 PM

^^HBO or NBC intern right there!

Posted by Anonymous | February 25, 2014 1:22 PM

Lena Dunham is a self absorbed fat ass nympho. The national is boring as fuck. Clearly what is going to happen here is a National bukake of Lena.

Posted by Anonymous | February 25, 2014 1:30 PM

I am dumbfounded at how this band has gotten this big. They are OK for a regional act, a large club band. The attention showered on them just makes me want to give up hope in the music buying public.

Posted by Anonymous | February 25, 2014 1:31 PM

SNL is obviously geared toward young broke hipsters that can't afford to go out on Saturday nights.

Posted by Anonymous | February 25, 2014 1:39 PM

I am a very creative person and so sex joke about Lena Dunham fat joke about Lena Dunham hipster joke about the National sex fat hipster sex fat hipster I am a genius!!!

Posted by Anonymous | February 25, 2014 1:42 PM

The Nationazzzzz

Posted by Anonymous | February 25, 2014 1:49 PM

Lena Dunham is fat and gross.

Posted by Anonymous | February 25, 2014 2:00 PM

both are completely overrated and shows critcs have no real taste. I at least have respect for The National (I am the first person to ever say here they made me sleepy) though all their songs sound the same and are kind of dull. Lena Dunham dialogue could be better written by a great school student. Her show is trash.

Posted by Anonymous | February 25, 2014 2:02 PM

Who the fuck is Lena Dunham? I'm serious.

Posted by Anonymous | February 25, 2014 2:03 PM

I meant grade school student!

Posted by Anonymous | February 25, 2014 2:03 PM

sounds like a slow show

Posted by Anonymous | February 25, 2014 2:08 PM

>>I am dumbfounded at how this band has gotten this big.

Hmmm, let's see. That's a tough one. Great songwriting, perhaps? Constant touring and a great live show?

The bigger this band (deservedly) gets, the more shrill and silly all the haters sound.

Posted by Anonymous | February 25, 2014 2:53 PM

I drink PBR.

Posted by Anonymous | February 25, 2014 3:35 PM

the problem with the national is that their music is boring and it..zzzzzz

Posted by Anonymous | February 25, 2014 3:36 PM

My taste in music is pretty varied, and I think The National are excellent songwriters. That being said, I'm in my 40's. I'm not so convinced I would enjoy the National's music as much if I was in my 20's. The band's sound is somewhat mature, which can easily be characterized as "boring." Also, while the band churns out one great album after the next, the band's sound is certainly not groundbreaking or that original. I understand the hate. I just don't agree with it.

Posted by Anonymous | February 25, 2014 3:39 PM

I think we'd get along, 3:39. You're older than me, but you get it. The National suck and you can admit that, even if only in a roundabout, indirect way.

I'm kidding, sort of. I appreciate what you're saying. I don't hate them, I just don't get the appeal of their music. Different strokes for different folkzzz...

Posted by Anonymous | February 25, 2014 3:58 PM

The National are great. @3:39, if you are in your 40's you should have the confidence to stand up say, "I like this". Not everyone is going to like every band, that's a given, but I can say I love The National's music and their live show is great. There is a reason they are as big as they are.

Posted by Anonymous | February 25, 2014 4:08 PM

I would lay flat on my back and let that chubbo Lena crouch over my head and fart in my face.

Posted by Anonymous | February 25, 2014 4:13 PM

The National are just boring stage R.E.M. without ever having gone through the cool stage.

Posted by Anonymous | February 25, 2014 4:16 PM

2:53 and 4:08 work for their promoter. No one has that beige a soul.

Posted by Anonymous | February 25, 2014 4:17 PM

The self-deprecating hipster Brooklyn jokes will be off the charts during this SNL episode considering Lena Dunham and the National are already parodies of themselves.

Posted by Anonymous | February 25, 2014 4:17 PM

2:53 and 4:08 are the same fan

Posted by Anonymous | February 25, 2014 4:19 PM

@4:08, I posted @3:39. If I didn't make it clear in my earlier post, I really like The National. They are among one of my favorite current bands. I'm just saying that I get why people don't like the band, and I could imagine not liking the band myself if I was much younger. It's hard to have perspective.

There's a bunch of other mellow-ish stuff I probably never would have the patience for in my youth (e.g. Beach House, Joanna Newsom, Wye Oak, Sufjan Stevens) that I enjoy now. Moreover, there is some excellent music that I wish I would listen to more often (e.g. Flying Lotus, Metz, Onehotrix Point Never) than I do, but the 40's me doesn't turn to it as much as I know the 20's me would have.

Posted by Anonymous | February 25, 2014 4:42 PM

>>2:53 and 4:08 are the same fan

No, we're actually not. I'm 2:53, and I'm in well into my 50s. And, besides the National, I also like Swans, Fucked Up, Sharon Van Etten, Mozart, Deafheaven, Pete Swanson, Dylan, and Earl Sweatshirt. You young folks should stop pigeonholing people based on their age and assuming that you know what they like.

Posted by Anonymous | February 25, 2014 4:54 PM

That Girls episode 2 weeks ago where she spent the whole time in a skimpy bikini was just gross. The fat rolls coming out of every angle. I mean that's great that she is comfortable in her body but honestly it was disgusting.

Posted by Anonymous | February 25, 2014 5:01 PM

bong qwaaluudes

Posted by Anonymous | February 25, 2014 5:11 PM

Nicely done @4:54. Old people taking over BV!!!

Posted by Anonymous | February 25, 2014 5:19 PM

My guess is that a lot of "old" people visit BV to read about music, because, believe it or not, "old" people were actually young people once, including in the '70s and '80s when most of the bands that influenced today's new music were actually around. A lot of "old" people, being music fans, like new stuff, although not necessarily the National because they are really boring, and like to read about it. "Old" people, however, are unlikely to make hummus jokes or comment on Lena Dunham's fat rolls and gross tattoos.

Posted by Anonymous | February 25, 2014 5:57 PM

2:53 / 4:54 sounds like a real tool. You a tool, gramps? Based on your SUPREMELY shitty taste in music I'd give that an unqualified "YES", not to mention that you likely smell like old people too.

I'm offbase? OK, how many permanent or non-permanent dental fixtures do you currently have? (i.e. bridges, crowns, etc.)

Posted by Anonymous | February 25, 2014 6:04 PM

Old people that come on BV were young people once, yes that's true. The problem is that they still think they are young, and don't realize just how uncool they have become.

#bigboytalk

Posted by Anonymous | February 25, 2014 6:07 PM

5:57 is car guy, 100%. Don't even try to deny it or play dumb.

Car guy has zero credibility, and all his supposed serious posts should be read as if he was bitching about riding the subway or whatever the fuck he does.

Yeahhh. So many comments here to address ... The reason this band got so big is the old school way of staying true to what you believe in, not compromising to simply make numbers and touring the fuck out of this country. The band has never done cheeky songs for simple $ or placement. They've stuck to what they have believed in as a collective. So like them or not, I happen to adore them, they've 100% earned whatever good comes their way. They also happen to be very down to earth and nice people, which is also swell.

Posted by Anonymous | February 25, 2014 6:33 PM

Hey "bigboytalk" @6:07. I'm in my 40's and I still go to lots of shows every year. (Upcoming: St. Vincent, Four Tet, Warpaint, The Notwist, The Knife, etc.) Honestly, I don't think I was cool when I was in my 20's and I am certainly not cool, or trying to be cool, now. I just happen to enjoy good live music.

You would think we would have something in common despite the age difference. Sheesh!

Posted by Anonymous | February 25, 2014 6:44 PM

^ and I recognize the irony of my prior statement given that I am not sure how "live" acts like Four Tet and The Knife really are.

Posted by Anonymous | February 25, 2014 6:46 PM

finally a TV show where we do not get to see this chicks flapjack tits, gut and nasty tattoos

Posted by Anonymous | February 25, 2014 7:29 PM

She'll find a way to take her clothes off. I am sure of it. Disgusting body. Comfortable in it or not.

Posted by Anonymous | February 25, 2014 7:33 PM

Your in your 40s now? it was well into 50s before Mr. Quotes

Posted by Anonymous | February 25, 2014 8:44 PM

LOL @ "I also like the Swans" yeah buddy, you might as well wear a big sign across your chest "LOOKIT MEEEEEE, I'M A BIG FAT TRENDY PUSSY" just like that pussy Gira

"a great live show" compared to watching a tree grow?

"great songwriting" oh yeah, now I know you are a troll, we on the same page G (wink wink)

Posted by Anonymous | February 25, 2014 9:20 PM

^so aggro about music. that's funny.

Posted by Anonymous | February 25, 2014 10:45 PM

I'm an older man, and I find that the Phyto-Nutrients locked within the chickpea give me great stamina for doing rock and roll dance moves such as the hip-thrust.

Posted by Anonymous | February 25, 2014 11:14 PM

really, I think you meant flan tho.

Posted by Anonymous | February 26, 2014 12:11 AM

Beck's new album took 3 listens to for it to really grow on me. I'm a huge fan of Odelay and Modern Guilt and obviously this album this follows Sea Change's suit. Check out my review on my blog: http://wevebeentherebefore.blogspot.com. Just a personal blog with concert reviews and festival news, no ads. Thanks.

Posted by Anonymous | February 26, 2014 12:25 AM

Well I think we are all in agreement that 9:20 is funny. It's a funny post. It is kind of strange that some find it agro, but such is to be expected from trolls I guess. Now that's funny, but not ha ha funny more move away from the angry guy on the subway funny.

Posted by Anonymous | February 26, 2014 12:29 AM

12:25 I've listened to that Beck album 3 times and still don't like it. Would a $128,000 donation to the Church of Scientology help me appreciate it more?

Posted by Anonymous | February 26, 2014 12:34 AM

I'm 54 and I find The national very dull and boring. Love the new Beck though. One of his best. I have to laugh at the "old people" jokes. I have more energy than a majority of the young people I work with and see out at shows who just stand there playing with their stupid phones.

Posted by Anonymous | February 26, 2014 12:54 AM

Do you think Lena Dunhams pussy looks like a soggy book or an over stuffed roast beef sandwich?

Posted by Anonymous | February 26, 2014 5:49 AM

So far of this band skew to the 45-60 demographic? Can't say that I am at all surprised lol. Having seen their morbidly paced live show I can see the attraction to bloated and out of shape bros, choosing sleepy safety as their art.

Posted by Anonymous | February 26, 2014 7:13 AM

I'm 70 and I only listen to Gwar.

Posted by Anonymous | February 26, 2014 7:50 AM

I'm dead and I listen to Fuck Buttons.

Posted by Anonymous | February 26, 2014 8:27 AM

5:49 is the edgiest dood on the 'net.

Posted by Anonymous | February 26, 2014 9:11 AM

I love The National, they are the best! I am a 52 year young accountant, and I love to dress up in my beige trousers when I go to see great shows like The National or Liza or Barbara.

Posted by Anonymous | February 26, 2014 9:27 AM

Fun thread. I'm in my early 40s and like The National. Haha. I'm not sure that The National would appreciate their demographic outing themselves as middle aged men who read Brooklyn Vegan.

If the troll making old people, "National sleepy" jokes is actually, say, in his twenties or teens and posting this often on here... I feel a little sad for you and what the rest of your life is like.

Posted by Anonymous | February 26, 2014 10:33 AM

Serious question -- how many of the new bands and artists (defined as released their first album after 2000) will people still be listening to 30 years from now? I can't think of very many. I really can't see people still listening to Death Grips, Grimes, Kanye West, Daft Punk, and Vampire Weekend in 2044.

Posted by Anonymous | February 26, 2014 10:40 AM

1040 AM None. I'm not sure why anyone would want to listen to those groups now.

Posted by Anonymous | February 26, 2014 2:08 PM

"If the troll making old people, "National sleepy" jokes is actually, say, in his twenties or teens and posting this often on here... I feel a little sad for you and what the rest of your life is like."

It took that to make you feel sad for them and only a little? C'mon any of these trolls who post repeatedly with their stupid nonsense are sad, pathetic fuckers. What is great though is they hate themselves more than anyone else they project onto and don't even realize it.

Posted by Anonymous | February 26, 2014 2:28 PM

I don't feel "sad" for any of the morons who post their idiotic, smarmy nonsense on here. They chose to be miserable.

Posted by Anonymous | February 26, 2014 2:44 PM

LOL I am not the slightest bit miserable old man, I can assure you of this ;-). My band is getting booked in larger halls, I see all the shows I care to from VIP, and if that's not enough I'm pretty confident that unless you are a senior partner at celebrity law firm or are the top trader in one of the big investment banks I make a bit more money than you do. I already have 3 patents and I've got too many ladies blowing up my phone to keep track of.

So I win, pops. :-)

Posted by Anonymous | February 26, 2014 3:23 PM

^ sorry I forgot the coda:
The National are beyond boring, and their live show is among the worst I have ever seen.

Posted by Anonymous | February 26, 2014 3:25 PM

yup, 3:23 wins

Posted by Anonymous | February 26, 2014 3:43 PM

^The last 2 comments from a guy so obviously the complete opposite of what he says he is.

Dude, that was absolutely pathetic.

Posted by Anonymous | February 26, 2014 3:43 PM

Only someone deeply pathetic and troubled feels like he wins on a chat room blog.

Posted by Anonymous | February 26, 2014 4:05 PM

LOL @ 4:05

It's much better to call someone pathetic and troubled

He's really bitter that life has passed him by but he can still be a big tough guy on the internet.

Anonymously of course.

Write back soon, Gramps - I so own you!!!

Posted by Anonymous | February 26, 2014 4:32 PM

-owns you (in a comment section on a blog)

-Wins (in a comment section on a blog)

Yeah, most definitely a pathetic and troubled person

Please good sir, keep telling all of us how amazing your life is and how everyone else you can't see is old or a grandpa and how you own someone or win in here

You are for sure champion of the trolls!! Congrats to you.

Posted by Anonymous | February 26, 2014 5:02 PM

I figured I'd warn you, so that people don't think you're as stupid as you are.

Posted by Anonymous | February 26, 2014 5:16 PM

My God what a bunch of losers post on here. 343-502 I'm talking about idiots like you! And I don't even like The National but please, go away.

Posted by Anonymous | February 26, 2014 5:23 PM

There are basically 2 types of people who post on BV: Those who have something intelligent to say and then the losers who just put down the artists and anyone who likes them, calls people childish names and makes stupid jokes. If you don't like a band and want to mock those who do, at least tell us what you think we should be listening to so we can laugh at you!

Posted by Anonymous | February 26, 2014 5:41 PM

the iPods

Posted by Anonymous | February 26, 2014 5:50 PM

Ya'll should be listening to this new indie band DIIV. A real good band to zone out and score some decks to.

Posted by Anonymous | February 26, 2014 5:54 PM

I'm nervous but also excited to see how SNL does without main-man Seth Myers. Some nice tunes from the National will help ease the tension. I am unfamiliar with this Lena Dunham character's work, but hear she is very funny on that show Girlz, so this episode should be enjoyable.

Posted by Anonymous | February 26, 2014 6:34 PM

SNL + Dunham + The National = AWFUL!
SNL should have died at least 20 years ago.

Posted by Anonymous | February 26, 2014 6:51 PM

Something something banjo something record store day something basement show.

Posted by Anonymous | February 26, 2014 7:16 PM

haha spoiled fatty, boring band

Posted by Anonymous | February 26, 2014 10:47 PM

"Old people that come on BV were young people once, yes that's true. The problem is that they still think they are young, and don't realize just how uncool they have become."

haha! you've got a bright future ahead of you young whippersnapper! you better hurry up and get married before mommy and daddy get mad and cut off your $$$$$$$$$$
