Tragedy struck SXSW tonight as two people were killed and many more seriously injured when a car plowed into a crowd of people outside club Mohawk on Red River and 9th St. in Austin:

Austin Police Lt. Brian Moon said the driver -- who has since been taken into custody -- crashed through temporary barricades.

"The driver continued to drive after crashing through the barricades and hit numerous pedestrians before the vehicle stopped," Moon told ABC News Radio.

The accident happened at Red River Street and East 10th Street, near several clubs. Photos taken at the scene show victims laying in the street, with emergency vehicles responding. The Austin-Travis County EMS also responded to the accident, according to ABC affiliate KVUE. - [ABC]

Just terrible. The accident happened just a few blocks from Red 7 where BrooklynVegan had its official SXSW showcase this evening. No word on what this may mean for the rest of the festival yet.

way to have separate entrances tonight at r7. missed out on against me as a result.

but more importantly, this news utterly sucks. the barricades they use out there are awful; slabs of wood with a metal plate. they really need something better given the crowds along 6th and up river.

^ The news of you missing out on against me is definitely a tragedy that was worth posting about under this story.

Can we get five questions with this drunk driver please?

Posted by Anonymous | March 13, 2014 8:56 AM

"No word on what this may mean for the rest of the festival yet."

Shouldn't you say "no word on the names of the victims yet"? Sounds kinda calloused to me.

Posted by Anonymous | March 13, 2014 9:49 AM

Really BV? You plug your showcase's hyperlink in THIS story??

Posted by Anonymous | March 13, 2014 9:51 AM

Wait, a driver killed someone and is being charged? But but but no criminality suspected! Guess Austin PD's actually competent.

Posted by Anonymous | March 13, 2014 9:54 AM

He was on his way to the Red 7 to wait in line for the bv day party.

Posted by Anonymous | March 13, 2014 9:55 AM

This is what you get when you don't copenhagenize.

Posted by Anonymous | March 13, 2014 9:56 AM

Don't worry BV, the corporate whorefest that is sxsw will bravely carry on! Lady Gaga will speak kind words of the dead and injured while singing in a giant Doritos vending machine! It's what the dead would have wanted!

Fuck I'd almost bet even the Mohawk won't cancel anything after today. Capitalism, bitches! Phantogram must play a show promoting a cunt booking agent or the drunk drivers have already won!

He was driving his dad's BMW, motherfucker.

Posted by Anonymous | March 13, 2014 10:04 AM

Man, fuck drunk driving. NYC Subways for life.

And may I add, what a selfish fucking prick.

I hope he gets out before the BV day show. I hear there is free beer.

Posted by Anonymous | March 13, 2014 10:31 AM

This is horrible news, but I'm sure we're all grateful that BV was able to work a link to its own showcase into their report, in case anyone forgot it happened. Unbelievable.

^ you're an idiot

Posted by Anonymous | March 13, 2014 1:25 PM

I've never understood this level of drunk driving. How is this even possible?

Posted by Anonymous | March 13, 2014 1:40 PM

Shows you why SXSW isnt a real music event.. Just an excuse to get drunk of free beer and act a dumb ass..Padre for Hipsters

Posted by Anonymous | March 13, 2014 2:41 PM

Funny how you idiots seem to have overlooked the fact that BV is a music blog. The news stories will therefore have a music focus. This would likely be why showcases and festival information is mentioned in the article. Rocket. fucking. science.

There are 12000 news outlets if you want gore photos and interviews with cops.

The moron quotient on here is unreal. Most of you halfwits could likely not even find Austin on a map.
