Kraftwerk
Kraftwerk

As fans filtered into the [venue] for a sold-out Kraftwerk concert, they were handed cardboard 3D glasses. Followers of the group - so revered for its ahead-of-its-time music and image - might've expected something a little more high-tech. A space suit, perhaps?

But in many ways the cheap accessory aptly summarized the German quartet's aesthetic: a merger of futurism and nostalgia, the avant-garde and bubblegum. [Greg Kot, Chicago]

Kraftwerk's 3D tour hit NYC last night (4/1) for their first of two shows at Washington Heights' United Palace Theatre. Starting the evening just before 8 PM with "The Robots," the synthpop pioneers played for a little over two hours, hitting most of their well known songs. The main set ended with a medley and balloons dropped over the audience. (They came out for a two-song encore.) Setlist and pictures from the show are in this post.

Kraftwerk play United Palace again tonight (4/2). Initially sold out, they released more tickets yesterday and are still available. It's one of the prettiest venues in the city, and sounds good too. More pics from Tuesday's show below...

such a great time last night...wish I was going tonight too

Posted by Anonymous | April 2, 2014 11:03 AM

"It was a fantastic show - can't wait to see them again tonight!"

I would sort of understand doing this if they changed their set from time to time but it's literally going to be the same exact thing tonight.

^if you like diversity from time to time you should check out the iPods!

Futuristic 1970's band playing a 1920's theater in 2014

Nothing about this makes sense.

How many fare jumpers were there at the 175th A train entrance?

Posted by Anonymous | April 2, 2014 11:25 AM

european daddies in tight outfits=win

Posted by Anonymous | April 2, 2014 11:35 AM

Come on, its 1/4 of the original group.

Posted by Anonymous | April 2, 2014 11:37 AM

10:54
you must be a concert noob, because otherwise you would know that photographers are allowed up front for the first 2-3 songs. Also it said they went on a little before 8. Its quite possible the persons in those seats were still in transit.

Posted by Anonymous | April 2, 2014 11:37 AM

11:11 - best comment ever

Posted by Anonymous | April 2, 2014 11:52 AM

i meant the second 11:11 (not the ipod loser)

10:54 - Yes, empty seats are hilarious. My sides are killing me.
11:42 - Yes, your mom was there.

Posted by Anonymous | April 2, 2014 11:53 AM

What time does Kraftwerk go on?

Posted by Anonymous | April 2, 2014 11:54 AM

10:54- You're kidding, right? You can't REALLY be that stupid.

Posted by Anonymous | April 2, 2014 11:56 AM

the coolest thing about any of this--the post and the actual show happening--is that someone took a picture of jon spencer.

Posted by Anonymous | April 2, 2014 12:00 PM

It's actually half the original band.

Posted by Anonymous | April 2, 2014 12:13 PM

it's 1/2 of the band.

Posted by Anonymous | April 2, 2014 12:16 PM

It was a really good, unique show and was worth the $25 per ticket I spent on Stubhub.

I appreciated how the crowd behaved well. I guess due to a mature demographic. People sat the entire show and remained politely quiet and didn't use their phones incessantly. It was easy to get in a trance watching the trippy 3-d visuals.

The ushers and house staff are amateurish -- lots of unnecessary, slow ticket checking to get to my lower loge seats. And they sloppily use their flashlights to guide people to seats and ruin the dark theatre vibe. And the theater is located too far away. 175th street?!

I don't care about how many original members were there. No one in the place did.

ok blondie, you come with me. your friend w/the bad work done can watch.

Posted by Anonymous | April 2, 2014 12:36 PM

Ok.

Yes, Ralf Hutter is the only founding member still in the band.

But Fritz Hilpert has been in the band since the late '80s.

And Henning Schmitz has been in the live band since the early '90s, having been Kraftwerk's sound engineer since 1978.

Stop with the "Come on, its 1/4 of the original group." This isn't Smashing Pumpkins we're talking about here.

Posted by Anonymous | April 2, 2014 12:38 PM

God, I would love to punch all of those asshats in the pictures above.

Posted by Anonymous | April 2, 2014 1:05 PM

Grow up, 12:36

Posted by Anonymous | April 2, 2014 1:16 PM

Kraftwerk > Any of today's(2000 on)bands (especially idiecrap)

Posted by Anonymous | April 2, 2014 1:21 PM

" Fritz Hilpert has been in the band since the late '80s."

So he joined AFTER they released their first nine albums?

Posted by Anonymous | April 2, 2014 1:29 PM

i really enjoyed remembering what the future looked like 30 years ago.

Posted by Anonymous | April 2, 2014 1:43 PM

great show. end of story.

Posted by Anonymous | April 2, 2014 1:49 PM

Just grabbed a ticket! I can't wait!

What's the security/pat-down situation like at the venue?

@11:54, Kraftwerk hit the stage at 7:50pm

Posted by Venison | April 2, 2014 2:03 PM

KRAPWERK is a total rip-off.

Posted by Anonymous | April 2, 2014 2:04 PM

I love these MORON Americans who say it doesn't matter about original band members. Shit, might as well just go see all cover bands then.

*Kraftwerk* did some great stuff around 1971. They actually rocked very hard.

This is KRAPWERK and they suck shit.

Posted by Anonymous | April 2, 2014 2:08 PM

Hey, since it doesn't matter AT ALL about original band members, I just re-formed The Clash and we're going to be playing at the above cheesy, shitty venue formerly known as the home of rip-off king Reverend Ike soon!

No doubt you'll love us, Joe Bummer, Paul Cinnamon, Sick Jones and Bopper Headon as we tear apart the Clash songbook!

Be there or be KRAPWERK.

Posted by Anonymous | April 2, 2014 2:14 PM

Last night was a great show. It's an amazing venue with a great staff.

Kraftwerk went on at 7:50 and they stopped at 10:00.

I saw The xx there a couple years ago and had an amazing time then too. A scalper sold my buddy a fake ticket and the staff let him in anyway.

Posted by Anonymous | April 2, 2014 2:21 PM

204/8/14 Tell that to all of the fans that are digging these shows. It's entertainment dipshit. Get a life! Besides Hütter, Fritz Hilpert has been around since 1987 and Henning Schmitz has been around since 1978. It's not like they are some pickup band.

Posted by Anonymous | April 2, 2014 2:22 PM

I bet 2:08 and 2:14 (let's face it, same person) get really excited when bands announce half-assed original lineup reunion tours. Bands change members. It happens. Grow up, you dweeb.

Posted by Anonymous | April 2, 2014 2:23 PM

annon 2:08 1971? They do have a bit of history after 1971. Living in the past are we? Let me guess - you have a poster of Florian Schneider on your ceiling that you beat off to!

Posted by Anonymous | April 2, 2014 2:26 PM

Then after re-forming the Clash, I'm reforming Suicide, with Suzanne Vega on vocals and Rick Wakeman on keyboards. The highlight is gonna be our version of "Journey To the Center of Your Bowels."

I hope all you stupid, illiterate, moronic little trust fund hipsters will be in attendance. Ironic mustaches optional.

Posted by Anonymous | April 2, 2014 2:31 PM

231 I'm 54, have been a fan since Autobahn and look forward to tonight. I'm sure you have something much better to do like enjoying that poster on your ceiling!

Posted by Anonymous | April 2, 2014 2:40 PM

$40 for a t shirt? WTFIT?

Posted by Anonymous | April 2, 2014 2:46 PM

$40 for a t-shirt, hahahaha.

Boy the Krauts are laughing at you dumb Yanks.

Posted by Anonymous | April 2, 2014 2:49 PM

Those five empty seats you see WERE IT (at least on the floor). The promoter/United Palace set aside that area for disabled seating (wheelchairs, etc.)

Congratulations on your smug ignorance, 10:54.

Those two bitches were in my row and would not shut up despite being shussed by multiple people in rows in front of them. When they went to the lobby I was relieved but then they just got drunker and came back louder. The guys there were with both had weird injuries--one had a bandaged hand with his middle finger permanently raised and the other had some sort of leg bandages. They were both into the music but would not tell these women to STFU. Fuck all of them

Posted by Anonymous | April 2, 2014 4:07 PM

4:07 - that's pretty awesome, but were you afraid of the guys (why didn't you do something?)

Posted by Anonymous | April 2, 2014 4:55 PM

come on there are no dogs & metal detectors there, right?

Posted by Anonymous | April 2, 2014 4:58 PM

There's pit bulls, metal detectors, and a SWAT team ready to go -- bad area of town over in Reverend Ike's old church.

Posted by Anonymous | April 2, 2014 5:30 PM

"We have something called the internet now old man."

Oooooooo. You have the "Internet" do you? Wow. I can see it's really made a genius out of you, you pathetic cretin. I'm sure clicking on all those porn links has done wonders for you. Do come by and see my band when you get a chance and introduce yourself.

Posted by Anonymous | April 2, 2014 5:34 PM

2:49 - check their site; it's 30 Euro for shirts, so they're laughing at everybody. Also, fuck off, you and all your smelly, incestuous countrymen.

Posted by Anonymous | April 2, 2014 5:39 PM

it was a great show, the 3D effects were excellent, the sound was pristine and massive...

sorry the rest of you posters couldn't make it...

Posted by Anonymous | April 2, 2014 7:05 PM

i can't believe no one's mentioned how many assholes showed up late

Posted by Anonymous | April 2, 2014 7:55 PM

"2:49 - check their site; it's 30 Euro for shirts, so they're laughing at everybody. Also, fuck off, you and all your smelly, incestuous countrymen."

Nobody is funnier or more blackly disgusting than Amerikan hillbilly trash, you cretinous cunt. Go fuck yourself, you ironic mustached trust-funded Williamsburg creep. And don't forget to come and see Suicide Mach II, you pompous little shit-eating asshole.

843 Whatever rat-hole of a country you crawled out from please return immediately. You are not wanted here.

Posted by Anonymous | April 3, 2014 4:22 AM

Another depressing trip through a half-written review and a comments section that is mostly tripe written by angry children. Brooklyn Vegan - you guys lucked out big time to stumble on such a winning formula and apply it so consistently to everything you do.

Posted by Anonymous | April 3, 2014 6:56 AM

8:43 - Your insults could use some work. Also, again, fuck off to you and whatever country allowed your (apparently) mentally deficient parents to mash their genitals together. And don't forget to commit suicide, or whatever.

Posted by Anonymous | April 3, 2014 8:29 AM

6:56 - Good job addressing the website directly, your comment(?) will obviously be carefully considered.

Posted by Anonymous | April 3, 2014 11:54 AM

@6:56 doesn't grasp that comments like the one she posted encourage the behavior she's complaining about.

Posted by Anonymous | April 3, 2014 1:39 PM

great show. end of story.

Posted by Anonymous | April 4, 2014 6:22 PM

I was at this show. about 40 minutes in, my ball sack started to itch and I stuck my hand in my pants and started pinching the sack. this alleviated the problem.

Posted by Anonymous | April 5, 2014 8:56 PM

6:56 is only partly right. I would substitute"retarded children" for "angry children" as the comments section has really fallen off the past year or so in terms of intelligence, wit, or insight. But 'depressed" ? not really. Bored is more like it.
