Morristown, NJ's Trophy Scars have been through many sounds in their 12-year career. They started as a straightforward post-hardcore band (comparative to their later works at least), and their 2006 sophomore LP, Alphabet. Alphabets., was a proggy, experimental take on the genre, similar in spirit to bands like Circle Takes the Square or mewithoutYou, but mostly it's a pretty unique record. After that, they just about abandoned post-hardcore completely on 2009's Bad Luck and the following EPs, Darkness, Oh Hell (2010) and Never Born, Never Dead (2011), which saw them offering a heavy take on Tom Waits-y blues and toying with other influences and instrumentation reaching far beyond the band's roots.
This year, they're finally set to release their full length followup to Bad Luck with a new album called Holy Vacants, due out on April 21 in Europe and May 6 in North America via Monotreme Records. The new album's single, "Hagiophobia," continues their trek into the world of Tom Waits, blues, and beyond. Waits' signature growl is still a clear influence on singer Jerry Jones, but the guitars here hearken back to the riffage of early '70s blues/prog rock (and The Mars Volta a bit too). They also throw in organ jams, a female vocal choir, and really leave themselves no boundaries.
You can pre-order the record, and grab a free download of "Habiophobia" above. The song can also be streamed, along with the LP artwork and tracklist, below.
Trophy Scars will play album release shows in NJ and NYC for the new record in early May, including 5/3 at Mexicali Live in Teaneck with Those Mockingbirds, Science and Netty Rose; and 5/10 at Slake on W 31st St with The Venetia Fair. Tickets for both of those shows are on sale now. No other tour dates announced at the moment.
