Kevin Drew w/ BSS at Williamsburg Waterfront in 2011 (more by Amanda Hatfield)
You can browse our full NYC show calendar for all of tonight's shows, but here are some highlights...
Kevin Drew, Andy Kim @ Bowery Ballroom
Broken Social Scene co-founder Kevin Drew released his new solo album this year, and tonight he celebrates it with a release show in NYC. For the show, he'll be joined by longtime collaborators Charles Spearin and Ohad Benchetrit (Do Make Say Think, Broken Social Scene), Dean Stone (Apostle of Hustle), Dave Hamelin (The Stills, Eight and a Half), and Marty Kinack (Broken Social Scene). Opener Andy Kim is the veteran Montreal songwriter who co-wrote "Sugar, Sugar" for The Archies in 1968, and has also released his own singles, like "Rock Me Gently," which was a #1 hit in 1974.
Olga Bell, Aaron Arntz/Benjamin Campell/Christopher Bear @ Le Poisson Rouge
Dirty Projector Olga Bell premieres the live show for her new Russian-language song cycle, Krai, at Le Poisson Rouge tonight with a number of guests. Opening is Grizzly Bear drummer Christopher Bear's trio with Aaron Artnz and Benjamin Campbell.
Ramona Lisa, Weyes Blood, Ian Drennan @ Baby's All Right
Ramona Lisa, aka Chairlift singer Caroline Polachek's new solo project, celebrates the release of her new album at Baby's All Right tonight. Weyes Blood is worth catching too.
Doug Tuttle, Rudy Stoned Band, X-Ray Specter @ Cake Shop
Doug Tuttle previously played guitar in the now-defunct New England psych band Mmoss, but he is now making melodic and trippy music on his own.
Frankie Cosmos, Toons, Eskimeaux @ Glasslands
Frankie Cosmos mixes the twee approach of Beat Happening with anti-folk style songwriting, and her debut full band album Zentropy (which follows countless bandcamp releases) is a great example of this.
Jessica Lea Mayfield, Gambles @ Mercury Lounge
Jessica Lea Mayfield now has three albums, none of which sound alike. On her new one, she brings in more distorted guitar and heavier blues influences than ever before, but her voice remains wispy. It's a good mix.
Say Hi, Big Scary @ Rough Trade
Barsuk labelmates Say Hi and Big Scary bring their tour to Rough Trade tonight for their first of two NYC shows this week. It's been a while since Say Hi played here, so if you've been needing to see them tonight's a good chance to remedy that.
Alden Penner, Pours, Cloud Becomes Your Hand, Nick Millevoi @ The Studio at Webster Hall
Alden Penner previously played in classic 2000s indie pop band The Unicorns, followed by a stint with his band Clues. Now he's taking the solo route and has a new album out and plays his first of two NYC shows this week tonight. Pours is the new project of Christopher Shar, who was previously a touring member of Man Man and Santigold.
David Wax Museum, Rusty Belle @ Mercury Lounge
Mexo-Americana folk band David Wax Museum graces NYC with another show at Mercury Lounge tonight.
Wyatt Cenac's Night Train w/ guest host Seaton Smith @ Littlefield
Wyatt Cenac's Night Train show continues tonight, and though Wyatt will be performing at this one, he also got Seaton Smith to guest host. Other guests include Neal Brennan, Emily Heller, Michelle Biloon, Carolyn Castiglia, and Dan Wilbur.
Mike Birbiglia @ Union Hall
The very funny Mike Birbiglia still has a number of his "Thank God for Jokes" tour dates coming up, but tonight he squeezes in another one of his small "Working It Out" shows at Union Hall.
Ask Me Another @ The Bell House
This is a live taping of WNYC's podcast, "a rambunctious hour that blends brainteasers and local pub trivia night with comedy and music" featuring guest John Turturro.
