House of Flying Hair: Bo Ningen @ The Studio at Webster Hall 5/2/2014
Bo Ningen

London-via-Japan quartet Bo Ningen played their final of three NYC shows on Friday night (5/2) with an explosive set at The Studio at Webster Hall. Like at Rough Trade last week, these guys defy pigeonholing -- and sometimes gravity -- with a mix doom riffs, proggy time changes, shoegaze effects and flying hair. To make things even more surreal, there was a guy in clown makeup dancing right up front. Pictures from their set are in this post and if you're at Austin Psych Fest this weekend, don't miss them on Sunday.

The clown guy wasn't the only wacky audience member of the evening. During openers Yvette's equally intense set some guy was doing some serious interpretive dance. That or mosh are your best alternative's to the duo's highly technical, occasionally abrasive, industrialized postpunk. Armed with a battery of effects pedals, guitars sound like synthesizers and machine part, and drums double as bass. They're really unlike any other NYC band at the moment, though I bet they're Big Black fans. Catch 'em if you can -- their next NYC show is May 27 at Baby's All Right with Monotonix guitarist Yonatan Gat and Tonstartssbandht (tickets).

Pics from Yvette's set, and more from Bo Ningen, are below...

I know that clown guy but I promised I wouldn't share any details.

After being Mommy and Daddy's sole focus for so long, it's hard to let that go....

Look at me. Look at me! LOOK...AT...MEEEE!!!

It is better if they have audience who seems to be very supportive.
