Converse Rubber Tracks nailed the line-up for last night’s (5/28) free (and sold out) show at the Music Hall of Williamsburg.

Philly’s Creepoid, who feature an ex-member of noise rock trio Fight Amp, has gained well-deserved attention for their second full-length. The crowd didn’t appear to be familiar with the band, but they were definitely into the grooved out 90s rock set. Creepoid gained a few fans last night, which is all the more impressive considering the performances that followed.

If you’ve never seen Screaming Females play live, you should fix that (in fact, they just released a live album, which I guess is the next best thing). The trio transforms from unassuming everymen to banshee-wailing, grinning, grooving rock gods the second they play their first note. And the energy is infectious–bassist “King” Mike barely stops grinning or jumping, and guitarist/vocalist Marissa Paternoster throws her whole body into howling and shredding. Given Paternoster’s audible J. Mascis influence, Screaming Females are a natural choice to open for Dinosaur Jr–and this was not the first time the band had taken on that supporting role. (Not even the first time at that venue.)

Then finally at 10 PM Dinosaur Jr took the stage. Lou Barlow sheepishly admitted that it was their first show in six months–not that anyone could tell. Barlow and Mascis are a study in contrasts on stage–Mascis shreds in place, occasionally tossing around his silvery hair, while Barlow sinks into every groove he plays. Dinosaur Jr is that rare band whose new songs are as well-received by their fans as their old ones, so the crowd couldn’t have been happier with their set. Pictures of the show are in this post.

Dinosaur Jr will be back in NYC to headline the free 4Knots Fest on July 12 at South Street Seaport with Speedy Ortiz, Viet Cong, Nude Beach and more.

Creepoid’s next show here is the Exploding In Sound Northside Showcase at Baby’s All Right (6/15) with Guerilla Toss, Krill, Ovlov, Celestial Shore and many more (tickets).
