The band sounded solid without overwhelming the space, and Garvey's emotionally earnest vocals commanded our attention even when chatting between songs, usually with a very British "Cheers!" He reminded the crowd that the new album, The Take Off and Landing of Everything which is number six since 2001, was filled with new tunes written in our "fair city"of New York. Older songs such as "The Bones of You" and "Grounds for Divorce" from The Seldom Seen Kid (2008), along with "The Night Will Always Win" and "The Birds" from Build a Rocket Boys (2011), anchored the new ones nicely, for example "New York Morning" and "My Sad Captains." As I eagerly anticipated hearing my favorite Elbow song live, it turned out that was saved for the very end of the evening. With grand gestures to usher everyone in a sing along, fans were treated to a fitting finale for an amazing night which will never be replicated - [New Music Matters]
With a new album, The Take Off and Landing of Everything, out now, veteran band and genuinely nice guys Elbow hit NYC (where much of the new album was written) on Friday (5/16) for a sold-out show at Webster Hall, part of the their current tour. Setlist -- which mixed new and old -- and pictures from their performance are in this post. Not on the setlist: the marriage proposal that happened in the front row right in the middle of the band doing "Mirrorball." Video of that song (and the proposal) below as well.

Looking for than a little like Elbow frontman Guy Garvey's brother, John Grant opened the evening, cherry picking some of his best songs -- including show-stoppers "Sigourney Weaver" and "GMF" -- for a short, six-song set with minimal backing. Not that he needs much. Pics and setlist from his set are in this post too.

He looks like that dude that wanted to start Sterling Cooper Draper Price out in LA, before Don stole that idea out from under him.

You know, that pot head.

Ha ha, good to see I wasn't the only one who picked up the resemblance between Garvey and Grant, it was a definite bear fest if you are into that type. Great show, Elbow always is enjoyable, Grant was good too although it would have been better with his full setup.

Never got into Elbow, they just seem so serious, but sounds like the show was fun :)
