David not worrying about his phone @ BAM (more by Chris La Putt)
David Byrne

David Byrne thinks Google is evil. He expresses this opinion, after having problems with one of his Android devices, in a post -- he's too even-keeled to write anything you'd call a rant -- on his website titled "Google is Evil":

Poking around, it seems that the latest version of Android (KitKat) disables certain kinds of uses on these storage cards that I had purchased; Google (who helped develop the Android operating system, and later bought it) seems to have intentionally crippled my devices. It cost me money for those cards, but more importantly, I use them as a creative tool. Phones especially get filled up with apps and other stuff, but if I can store my pictures, music and voice memos on an SD card, I can worry less about memory issues...

...Other forums suggest Google is "forcing" us to store stuff in the Cloud, presumably where they can get at all our data and then market it to advertisers.

It's a weird feeling to have an invisible corporate hand reach into your gizmo, without asking really, and cripple it.

Wish I could do the same--reach in there and cripple their search algorithm--because, maybe on a whim, I determined I wanted it to work differently.

Read the whole thing over at David Byrne's place.

Yeah. A big part of my job is dealing with Google and they are shady/creepy as hell.

I was hoping that Google was his pet name for Annie Clark

He was like "this is not my beautiful SD card, this it not my beautiful gizmo."

I'm the same statement, Byrne also stated that fish tacos were evil. The media failed to report that apparently.

Honestly, I thought I was going to read something stupid. I ended up being pleasantly surprised that it really wasn't and asinine statement.

You CAN, David! it's called open source, and cyanogenmod!

He's also full of shit. I've updated to KitKat and can copy music to my SD card, save photos to my SD card, save Evernote notes and audio files to my SD card. Shockingly he decided to rant without researching. His issue is either with his service provider or an incompatible device. But instead we get this ill informed screed. Probably too busy working on another diary about his bike riding.

Google is evil. And scary. I didn't know they were trying to make their devices as closed as their Apple counterparts, but it's not surprising.

David always struck me as a good person who's way too high strung, but figured out how to use that to his advantage in his art.

I'm glad he's refrained from reuniting Talking Heads. Every great old band doesn't have to reform for spoiled festival crowds. Besides, I read that fairly awful Heads bio, and Tina Weymouth comes off as a mainly terrible person.

I'll never, ever get sick of "Remain in Light," but I don't have see it performed in its entirety at Coachella, thank you very much.

Boo fucking hoo. Don't use a computer, phone or tablet then. Apple, Google, Microsoft etc are all trying to sell you a product and it behooves them to know how people use their products. You want privacy? Don't blog, use social media or go online at all. It's possible to live disconnected.

Were there pix of Annie Clark's legs?

I liked Byrne better when he was waxing poetic about things like Air, Paper and Cities.
