Justin Vernon & Megafaun @ Baby's All Right - 5/2/14
Megafaun went on what they said will be their last (and very brief) tour for a while last week, hitting their hometown of Durham, NC for two shows, followed by DC and NYC. Special guests were promised, and like at the Durham shows and DC show, the NYC show at Baby's All Right this past Friday (5/2) featured Bon Iver's Justin Vernon sitting in with the band. Justin's presence made the show almost a full DeYarmond Edison reunion, the pre-Bon Iver/Megafaun band that featured Justin, all three members of Megafaun, and Chris Porterfield. Their encore was played entirely acoustic in the middle of the room, surrounded by the crowd. Ultimately they basically played a Megafaun set, with Justin filling in for their bassist NIck Sanborn who is busy being in Sylvan Esso. NYC Taper was there, so a recording should be up at his site soon.
The show was opened by Grandma Sparrow, the project of Megafaun drummer Joe Westerlund, who wore various wigs, hats and a beak as he told stories over musical backing.
No other guests besides Justin for the evening, but Har Mar Superstar and members of Sharon Van Etten's band could be spotted in the audience. Pictures of the Baby's All Right show are in this post. More below...
