Mogwai

As my friend David and I were being hurled around the mosh pit at the Terminal 5 show of legendary post-rock ensemble Mogwai, I thought back to how earlier that day I had assured my mom that there wouldn't be any moshing. "Mom," I said, "Mogwai's music is too ambient to mosh to." Post-rock is an ambient genre, that's true; it's ethereal and sedate. However, it can often get pretty heavy, and Mogwai totally proved that on Friday, May 9. [Scene Point Blank]
Post rock giants Mogwai brought their tour with Majeure to NYC for a big show at Terminal 5 this past Friday (5/9). They included a handful of tracks from their new album, Rave Tapes, but reached back for old favorites like "Mogwai Fear Satan," "Ex-Cowboy," and others too. Pictures of the show (including one of the setlist) are in this post.

Mogwai also just made a video for "Simon Ferocious" from Rave Tapes, and added more dates to their tour. Watch the new video, with the updated list of dates, and more pictures and a couple videos from Terminal 5, below...

Incredible show / setlist.

Best mix I've ever heard at a Mogwai show, sound was perfect... At t5 of all places.

MFS live just can't be beat.

I'll say it again - I've seen Mogwai a bunch of times, and this show was the best all around show of theirs I have ever seen. Best energy, best sound (!), best setlist (balance of old and new), did I say best energy?

Batcat was epic

That should tell all the venues experts in here, T5 can have a great sounding shows. Usually it really depends on where you're standing, but this time around I feel it sounded great all over the place.

Def wayyyyyy better show than the miserable ones at awful webster hall last time. But still, their best here was the one at MHOW.

The band played great, but the crowd was just awful. I've been seeing them since 98 and this was the most loud and obnoxious crowd I've ever had to endure at one of their shows. If you're going to talk to your buddy during the quiet part of Mogwai Fear Satan, you really shouldn't be there. And what the fuck is with trying to start a pit?

MHOW show was epic, this was good also

Posted by Anonymous | May 12, 2014 10:58 AM

i totally agree with everyone - this was probably the best sound i've heard at T5 - the band looked like they were having fun up there and it came through - i have to agree with 10:53am - shut up already and let the band play - if you wanna scream, do it on your own time!

MHOW was great too, not the least for the size. But this won wins for pacing of set and sound.

"This is what purgatory sounds like"

LOL

Posted by Anonymous | May 12, 2014 11:32 AM

Crowd looks like they were all injected with embalming fluid prior to the show.

Awesome set and yes, awesome sound. I hate T5 but they have been getting the sound much better there recently... And Mogwai at Southpaw was pretty fucking epic...

I'm bummed I didn't go. I saw the Webster Hall show last year and MHOW a few years prior. My ears are still bleeding from those shows, but well worth it. Mogwai slays it live

Does the guy with the baseball hat not realize that everyone knows he's bald?

Posted by Anonymous | May 12, 2014 12:28 PM

"... guy with the baseball hat ...."

LOL, Grimes is down the hall, son. On your way now ;-)

Posted by Anonymous | May 12, 2014 12:35 PM

another opinion that the sound for this show was incredible. whoever is doing sound for the band has that shit dialed in.

Posted by Anonymous | May 12, 2014 12:53 PM

like herod?

Posted by Anonymous | May 12, 2014 1:57 PM

the sound was laughably muddy, with the guitars largely inaudible. The band was great, just the wrong room for a band with three guitars.

Posted by Anonymous | May 12, 2014 2:11 PM

The guitars were inaudible? So all you could hear were drums and keyboards?

nm the setlist loaded this time i can see what they playhed

i just don't get what the big deal is about this band. i was at this show and the music was ok but just kind of sleepy for the most part, there were definitely no surprises. everyone raves about how amazing they are and i just don't hear it.

Posted by Anonymous | May 12, 2014 3:57 PM

To the guy behind me who kept on asking everyone around him when the vocals were going to begin and who the "leader of the band" was, congratulations, you were, without a doubt, the most annoying attendee of the evening.

Posted by Anonymous | May 12, 2014 5:37 PM

sorry bro, still don't know who the leader is

Posted by Anonymous | May 12, 2014 8:21 PM

The Watusi Lady with the flowing magic hands, appears in the second video.
