Nightsatan

Finnish nutters Nightsatan are now streaming the full soundtrack to Nightsatan and the Loops of Doom, the cinematic debut of their “laser metal.” The soundtrack and the 24 minute short film will be packaged together as a CD/DVD combo to be released on May 9 via Svart Records. (Preorder.)

The soundtrack will immediately appeal to people who spent their ’80s in grind house theaters, evoking the same pang of nostalgia as modern time-capsule-crackers such as Zombi and Umberto. Yet, like the aforementioned do for b-flick horror, Nightsatan aren’t mere cheap sci-fi revivalists. They do not assault the precincts with ironic fluff. “(Obey) Thy Master” ably beats with the pulse of Giorgio Moroder, while “Secret of the Mystery” kicks around in kosmische time, layering leads which could’ve come from the hands of Ashra’s Manuel Göttsching and Harald Grosskopf.

The OST is Nightsatan’s third release, following 2009’s Steel Diamond / Space Revenger single and 2010’s Midnight Laser Warrior LP. Originally, Inhalator II, Mazathoth, and Wolf-Rami aimed for “. . .the soundtrack to Miami Vice meets heavy metal.” Vestiges of the metal remain, though the group is now more in line with the synth-stylings of Tangerine Dream and even early Yellow Magic Orchestra.

But, the undeniable draw is the movie. Directed by CHRZU, he who helmed Curse of the Remote Island, the bat-guano flick pits the trio against “. . .an unknown musician, who enslaves his victims in his programmed choir.” If the trailer is to be believed, the end result is something like Zardoz if produced by Roger Corman on a budget of all the cocaine. All of it. So, using the trailer as our guide, let’s play Is It a Nightsatan and the Loops of Doom Scene or Did You Just Take Mushrooms?

– A man wearing a skeleton mask wields a sawblade as a weapon. Later, he punches through someone’s face.

– The ‘Grand Master of Sonic Rituals,’ no doubt a special six sigma distinction, carefully protects an egg. No word if this is a Cool Runnings homage.

– Jerry Garcia is speaking through the glugs of your work’s water cooler and only you can hear it, man.
