Alice Cooper

After Rocks Off's inaugural film festival last year, the rock n' roll film fest is returning to NYC for a second year from May 15 through May 17 at the Kraine Theatre in the East Village. So far, this year's schedule includes screenings of the Stones Throw documentary Our Vinyl Weighs a Ton (tickets) and the acclaimed "doc opera" Super Duper Alice Cooper (tickets), which tracks the rise of the shocking rocker/DJ/golf enthusiast throughout his career.

Super Duper Alice Cooper candidly recounts both the virtues and vices of stardom through the mascaraed eyes of Alice Cooper portrayer Vincent Damon Furnier, who would rise to prominence thanks to a theatrical and over-the-top stage show in an era of theatrical and over-the-top stage shows. The documentary provides greater context for the Detroit native's exploits, making it clearer exactly how and why Cooper was regarded as an innovator by the generation of rockers and metallers that continued his nightmare. The film also includes a deep look into Cooper's struggles with addiction while unpacking the various legends which endeared and vilified the group in equal measure. But, most of all, it explores what happens when the character begins to overtake the player.

The documentary was helmed by directors Sam Dunn, Reginald Harkema, and Scot McFadyen, all of whom have found a niche with documentaries focusing on metal and hard rock. Their previous filmography includes Rush: Behind the Lighted Stage, Iron Maiden: Flight 666, and Metal: A Headbanger's Journey. Super Duper Alice Cooper, though, might be their biggest venture thus far, slated to play on 250 domestic screens with loads of international engagements on the docket, as well. And now you can catch the flick by heading down to the Rocks Off film festival. If that doesn't do it, perhaps this Rocks Off tease will: "Did we mention we bought a freakin' popcorn machine?"

Want more Alice, just in the flesh? He'll be hitting the road soon on the Mötley Crüe farewell tour which hits NYC and the surrounding area on 8/29 at Jones Beach, 8/30 at PNC Bank Arts Center, and 10/28 at MSG (tickets).

All the dates, along with the Super Duper Alice Cooper trailer, and an example of a late '70s Alice Cooper concert appear below...

Lame VH-1 style doc. Other than his somewhat cool, short lived new wave "Clones" era, the "Coop" has been a sad joke since his original band left!
