Offspring

2014 has been quite the year for major alternative rock records celebrating their 20th anniversaries. Blue Album and Diary shared a 20th birthday this past weekend, and earlier this year we saw 20th anniversaries from Superunknown, The Downward Spiral, Dookie, and Dookie's partner in (for better or for worse) popularizing pop punk, The Offspring's Smash. The Offspring just announced that they'll celebrate that anniversary by playing the album in full on tour this summer. And to really party like it's 1994, they'll take out Bad Religion and Pennywise, who they played the Epitaph Records-sponsored three-day Summer Nationals with in LA in 1994. (Hence this tour being dubbed the "Summer Nationals 2014 Tour.")

The tour hits NYC for two nights at Terminal 5 (8/4 & 8/5) on a leg of dates that also includes '90s-era Epitaph faves The Vandals. Tickets for the T5 shows go on sale Friday (5/16) at noon. All dates are listed below.

Like many of their Class of '94 peers (Weezer, Green Day, I'm looking at you), The Offspring had pretty much lost it by the 2000s, but there's no denying the impact of Smash. And some of those songs ("Self Esteem," "Bad Habit") still sound good today. Relive your Smash memories, with the list of dates, below...

The Offspring - "Nitro (Youth Energy)"

Bad Religion, SLF and Naked Raygun - that would be a great show, Offspring can stay home.

Posted by Anonymous | May 12, 2014 1:37 PM

""Trendy assholes" will not be admitted"

Gonna be a lot of fans dressing up as empty seats for this show then, poser. LOL

Posted by Anonymous | May 12, 2014 1:58 PM

smash is actually great, let's be real

going

Posted by Anonymous | May 12, 2014 2:03 PM

these spiked up hair gel losers still exist?

Posted by Anonymous | May 12, 2014 2:09 PM

The Offspring never had it. If you were listening to the Offspring, Weezer or Green Day back in 94 you had terrible taste in music.

Posted by Anonymous | May 12, 2014 2:17 PM

Will leave after The Vandals.

Posted by Anonymous | May 12, 2014 2:19 PM

As a dude that remembers when this album came out it wasn't any good then, either.

Posted by Anonymous | May 12, 2014 2:19 PM

Yo whateva. The REAL news is that Soundgarden is playing Superunknown at Webster Hall on 6/2.

Posted by Anonymous | May 12, 2014 2:23 PM

The Offspring is the kind of band whose members have always been old.

Posted by Anonymous | May 12, 2014 2:31 PM

Zamboni time music

Posted by Anonymous | May 12, 2014 2:32 PM

I'm old so I remember back in the day listening to Smash and thinking it had more in common with Out Of The Cellar than any kind of punk rock. And I dug it for the exact same reason. Their early records were fun. I don't understand how they turned into such an awful novelty band overnight in 1995 or whenever they started making those awful singles that were supposed to be funny.

Posted by Anonymous | May 12, 2014 2:44 PM

they put on a fun live show, not gonna go to t5 on a weeknight for them though

Posted by Anonymous | May 12, 2014 3:16 PM

Isn't Neil Degrasse Tyson in this band or something?

Posted by Anonymous | May 12, 2014 3:29 PM

Smash was a great album and it was also one of the first cassettes I ever purchased. Always disliked Dexter Holland's vocals though, and their subsequent albums were total crap.

Posted by Anonymous | May 12, 2014 3:29 PM

I'm going. Can't turn down Bad Religion and the Vandals. Never cared for Pennywise. The number of bros at this will be annoying.

Posted by Anonymous | May 12, 2014 3:41 PM

They have a song on my NHL13 game. They sound like alt-country rock on that one. I can't believe they're still around either.

Posted by Anonymous | May 12, 2014 4:38 PM

Wow, what a tour. When was the last time The Vandals even played NY? Nevermind that, how about even leaving California?? This is gonna be great. Perfect tour, BR being the best of course.

Posted by Anonymous | May 12, 2014 5:03 PM

you gotta keep 'em separated...

Posted by Anonymous | May 12, 2014 9:09 PM

This still ain't punk. I'm not sure I'd rather this or trendy Chvrches-styled hipster top 40. Probably rather see a Bill Joel tribute at BB King's than either. Bad music all over Brooklyn and Manhattan!

Posted by Anonymous | May 13, 2014 7:29 AM

you're right it's not punk in it's truest since but if you lived in socal 20 years ago, it was punk enough

Posted by Anonymous | May 13, 2014 10:04 AM

^^^sense

Posted by Anonymous | May 13, 2014 10:05 AM

Stone Pony. You know that will be fun. Better than T5 on it's best night, which is never.

Ratt >>>>>>>> Offspring

Posted by Anonymous | May 13, 2014 10:29 AM

Ratt 1984. Offspring 1994. Close though.

Posted by Anonymous | May 13, 2014 12:33 PM

Ratt = That "Round and Round" video with Milton Berle is pretty fun.

Offspring = I'd like to shave off that motherfucker's braids.

Posted by Anonymous | May 13, 2014 2:30 PM

I'm not convinced that even 12:33 knows what point he was attempting to make. Close though.

Posted by Anonymous | May 13, 2014 2:46 PM

If Round And Round is the only Ratt song you know you should stop posting anything about Ratt. They ruled, into the '90s, and put out a compelling body of work as compared to these Tony Hawk kidults. Talent is capital, and Offspring are paupers.

Posted by Anonymous | May 13, 2014 2:51 PM

Wow. I remember all of Ratt's hits like "Wanted Man," etc., and even saw their greatest hits home video a few times, but really, "Round and Round" was their only hit, and the only thing that mattered in the slightest.

And if you think Ratt are great artists that should be whispered about in hushed tones, you should seek help.

My joke was this, for those with head trauma, like 2:51: "Ratt had one good song, the Offspring had none." Got it?

Posted by Anonymous | May 13, 2014 3:02 PM

I'm so tired of the "this is punk" and "this isn't punk" and people measuring the quality of music as if it isn't mostly subjective anyway.

You know why I loved the Offspring? Because they were fun. Remember liking things because they were fun? Before you decided that impressing others with your "superior" music knowledge became more important? And if you want to get technical about it, nothing at all that was inspired by punk could be punk itself. So only like, the first 3 punk bands were actually punk. Stupid.

So how about we all just listen to the music we like and stop judging everyone else's taste?

Posted by Anonymous | May 15, 2014 1:44 PM

Oh, and let's not forget that we are judging "good" and "bad" music in a genre based on a minimal chord structure and the principle that anyone can and should play music.

1:44 needs to join a book club.
