La Sera at Bowery Ballroom in 2012 (more by Fred Pessaro)
La Sera

You can browse our full NYC show calendar for all of tonight’s shows, but here are some highlights…

Brooklyn Flea Record Fair
Happening at popular food destination Smorgasburg, the BFRF is a mix of used vendors and independent label booths from the likes of DFA, Captured Tracks, Partisan, Cascine, Warp, Frenchkiss, Famous Class, Minimal Wave (with their now famous MW cupcakes) and more. This year it’s also a part of the Red Bull Music Academy, with DJ sets from Autre Ne Veut, Caroline Polachek (Chairlift, Ramona Lisa), Tanlines’ Jesse Cohen, Optimo and Sandra Electronics to make your crate digging a little more pleasurable. BrooklynVegan is also a proud sponsor.

Vulture Fest
New York Magazine’s pop culture blog Vulture is throwing this two-day  festival this weekend featuring a bric-a-brac of panels and events based around movies, TV, music and comedy. Most of it is happening at Milk Studios in Manhattan.

M.I.A., Solange @ Webster Hall
After playing Queens warehousy Knockdown Center last night, MIA teams with Solange for a very sold out part of Vulture Fest.

Shoes, Paul Collins’ Beat, Barreracudas, Games @ The Bell House
Night two of the Brookyn Power Pop Festival features some true legends in the genre, with The Nerves’ frontman Paul Collins and Chicago’s under appreciated Shoes, plus two great newer band — Barreracudas and Brooklyn’s Games.

La Sera, High Waisted, Springtime Carnivore @ Baby’s All Right
With Vivian Girls behind her, Katy Goodman’s main focus is now on the more pop-oriented La Sera. Tonight’s the record release show for her new album, Hour of the Dawn.

Upset, Worries @ Baby’s All Right
Ex-Hole/Vivian Girls band Upset play their second of two NYC shows of the week tonight, and joining them is their Don Giovanni labelmates Worriers, whose socially aware pop punk rips.

Robert Henke’s Lumiere, The Haxan Cloak @ Brooklyn Masonic Temple
As part of Red Bull Music Academy, artist Robert Henke will present the US premiere of his laser light show, Lumière, and joining him is dark electronic musician The Haxan Cloak. Sounds mind-bending.

Ava Luna, Heliotropes, Le Rug, Eastern Hollows @ Brooklyn Night Bazaar
Brooklyn Night Bazaar offers weekends of local artisan shopping, gourmet eats, beer and wine, ping pong, black light minigolf and music all under one Greenpoint roof. Tonight’s headlined by long-running and underrated Brooklynites Ava Luna.

Ovlov, Geronimo!, Dead Wives, LVL UP @ Death by Audio
Good night of ’90s-style indie rock at DbA with the Dino Jr/SY-loving Ovlov, the noisy Geronimo!, Speedy Ortiz-related Dead Wives, and crunchy Built to Spill-esque rockers LVL UP.

Tennis, Ski Lodge @ Music Hall of Williamsburg
Poppy Colorado duo Tennis are currently working on their new album and may be playing some new stuff. They sing to tykes at Kidrockers at NYU’s Skirball Center during the afternoon before tonight’s MHOW show.

Shark?, Howth, Soft Black, Pinegrove @ Shea Stadium
If you like sugary garage punk like Wavves, Shark? are one of the better local bands in Brooklyn doing that sort of thing.

Cretin Stompers, LODRO, Downer, Honduras, Baby Acid @ The Flat
Featuring members of Wavves and the Reatards, scuzzy trio Cretin Stompers have some ultra-catchy songs underneath that low-fi noize. They’re the not-so-secret guests tonight that’s an otherwise fun bill, with Cassie Ramone and Tamaryn DJing between sets.

Okkyung Lee w/ C Spencer Yeh // Chris Corsano/Bill Nace @ The Stone
NYC noise cellist Okkyung Lee continues her Stone residency tonight with past collaborator C Spencer Yeh at the 8 PM set and two Sonic Youth member collaborators Chris Corsano & Bill Nace (the latter of whom is currently in Body/Head with Kim Gordon) at the 10 PM set.

The Men, Obits, Nude Beach @ The Wick
If you haven’t checked out The Wick, finally open after a slow gestation period, here’s a good show to check out with lots of great, no-nonsense guitar rock.

Brigid Dawson’s Fare Thee Well Opening Reception @ Worship
Brigid is not part of the current touring line-up of Thee Oh Sees, but here’s a chance to see her artwork at Williamsburg vintage clothes store Worship. Tonight’s the opening with beverages in the store’s open backyard and a performance by Jim McHugh.

Agoria, Kindness, Ripperton, Lusine, Nicole Ross @ Verboten
Kindness has a new album coming out which reportedly features Robyn, Blood Orange, and Kelela. Maybe he’ll give us a taste of some of that tonight.

Ulcerate, Inter Arma, Car Bomb @ Saint Vitus
It’s a solid double header for metal at Vitus tonight with the atmospheric death metal of Ulcerate and the psychedelic black-ish metal of Inter Arma.

Saturday Slamfest @ Blackthorn 51
A bunch of metal bands come together for Saturday Slamfest at Queens venue Blackthorn 51 today, most notably death metal originals Suffocation.

HAIM, Shy Girls @ Terminal 5
HAIM’s ascent continues. Resistance is futile.

For laughs, check out the NYC Comedy calendar too.
